Luvern L. Baskerville

Luvern L. Baskerville, 88, a Marshalltown, Iowa resident, entered into eternal life Sunday, June 26, 2011 at MMSC in Marshalltown.

A celebration of life service was held Friday, July 1, at the Elim Lutheran Church in Marshalltown. Interment will be held at a later date in Fonda, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Elim Lutheran Church or the Gideons.

Luvern was born in Fonda on June 13, 1923, son of Lester and Clara Baskerville.  He graduated from Fonda High School and attended Iowa State University.  He was united in marriage to Beulah Krohn, Nov. 1, 1942 in Lytton, Iowa.  He farmed near Fonda until 1956 when he began custodial work at Lytton School until 1964.  He then became the building and grounds superintendent at Estherville Schools through 1966.  He then moved to Marshalltown and was the building and grounds superintendent for Marshalltown schools and Marshalltown Community College.  Luvern retired in 1983 with 19 years of service there.

Luvern was an active member of Lutheran churches and Gideon’s wherever he lived.  Following retirement he resided in Clear Lake and Mason City and spent 23 winters in Apache Junction, Az.  He enjoyed traveling, fishing, lapidary, silversmithing and stained glass hobbies, music, singing in choirs and family genealogy. 

Luvern is survived by his wife, Beulah, of 68 years; daughter, Marlene (Ken) Shadle of Mason City; son, Lester (Ginny) Baskerville of Kellogg, Iowa; daughter in law, Linda Baskerville of Mason City; sons, Bruce (Pam) Baskerville of West Des Moines and James (Debra) Baskerville of Marshalltown as well as 14 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Luvern was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Clara Baskerville; brothers, Don and Leroy; son, Warren Baskerville; grandson, Spenser Baskerville; and in-laws, Henry and Ethel Krohn.

Bonnie Louise (Kimball) Edgar

Bonnie Louise (Kimball) Edgar, 80, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.

Memorial services were held Friday, July 1, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake officiating. Inurnment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Family suggests memorials to the Bonnie L. Edgar Memorial Fund.

Bonnie was born Oct. 8, 1930 in Clear Lake, the daughter of Floyd and Ruth (Olson) Kimball.  She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1948.

Bonnie married Darrell Edgar Sept 3, 1950 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.

Bonnie enjoyed bowling, reading, dancing, doing crossword puzzles, collecting swans, playing cards and scrabble.  She especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and the family get-together on the Fourth of July.  She loved her cat, Shadow.  She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Bonnie is survived by her three daughters, Kathleen DaWalt, Shawano, Wis., Debra Bryan, Clear Lake, and Lauri (Leroy) Thorson, Lino Lake, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Kurt Kienast, Heather Sheahan, Andrea Priolo, Angela (Mike) Worple, Travis Thorson, Ashley Thorson Ryan DaWalt and Destry Mangan; 10 great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Sheahan, Morgan Sheahan, Cory Trainer jr., Thomas Priolo III, Logan Priolo, Tori Thorson, Kanen Finch, Taylor DaWalt, Blake Worple and Christian Worple; sister, Lola Barnes, Wheatridge, Colo.; brothers-in-law, Wes (Myrna) Edgar, Clear Lake, and Cle (Marleah) Edgar, Green Valley, Az. and several nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1973; sister, Elaine Bannister; two sons-in-law, Randy Bryan and Mike DaWalt; and brothers-in-law, Wally Edgar and Bob Barnes.

Jerrad Tyler Ramon

Jerrad Tyler Ramon, 16, of Clear Lake, died Thursday, June 30, 2011 in Clear Lake.

Funeral services will  be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with Pastor Will Hunsaker of First Church of the Open Bible officiating.  Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa beside his loving grandmother, Rosa Ramon.  Visitation will be  one hour before the service on Wednesday at the church.  Family suggests memorials to Jerrad Ramon memorial fund.

Jerrad was born June 4, 1995 in Mason City, Iowa the son of Albert Ramon and Staci Scott.    He attended school in Ventura, Clear Lake and was attending the Learning Center School, Mason City.  He was in the class of 2013. 

He enjoyed playing with his brothers and especially taking on the role as big brother and also spending time with his parents and grandma Janette.  Jerrad enjoyed playing video games with his friends, playing jokes on them and was known for his humor.  He never had a shortage of friends.

Jerrad is survived by his father, Albert (Stacy) Ramon, Mason City, Iowa; mother, Staci Scott, Clear Lake;  four brothers,  A.J. Ramon, Trey Ramon and Alex Ramon all of Mason City, Matthew Ramon-Kedney, California; maternal grandmother, Janette (Jerry) Arnold, Clear Lake; maternal grandfather, Robert (Kris) Scott, Little Rock, Ark.; paternal grandfather, Kelly Ramon, Garland, Texas;  step paternal grandmother, Melissa Munson, Mason City; great maternal grandparents, Joann Johnson, Evansdale, Iowa, Gale Johnson, Cedar Falls, Iowa and Art (Ruth) Scott, Janesville, Iowa and too many special aunts, uncles and cousins to list. 

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Rosa Ramon; great aunt, Laura Ward and his special cat, Casper, who died recently.

Betty Mae Enabnit

Betty Mae Enabnit, 87 of Clear Lake, died, July 1, 2011, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.

A funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at the Clear Lake Church of Christ, 2010 14th Ave North, Clear Lake, with Pastor Curtis McGinnis officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Swaledale, Iowa.

Should friends desire, memorials may be directed to the Crossroads College, Rochester, Minn. in her memory.

Betty was born Feb. 4, 1924, in Swaledale, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur and Helen (Anderson) Enabnit. Betty attended country school thru 8th grade and was a graduate of Clear Lake High School. Following graduation, Betty attended Iowa State Teaching College and Minnesota Bible College.  She taught in rural schools for two years.

Betty was a charter member of the Clear Lake Church of Christ and taught extended session to 4-6 year old Sunday School.   She was also a member of the Christian Workers Group.  Betty taught a neighborhood Bible school and was a missionary in Barbados for a short time.  She did a lot of missionary literature and wrote a lot of letters.  Betty worked for Mission Services in Joliet, Ill. for five years.   She was a housemother and job coach at Opportunity Village from 1972-1999, after retiring she continued volunteer work.

Betty is survived by her sisters, Edith Alsbury, Mt. Vernon, Iowa; Ila (Gerhard) Braun, Mountain City, Tenn. and Lee Ann (Bill) Kurtz, Klemme, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Doris Enabnit, Clear Lake and Veronica Enabnit, Mesa, Az.; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Helen Enabnit; sister, June E. Enabnit in 1965; two brothers, Jack Enabnit and Paul Enabnit and brother-in-law, Norman Alsbury.

Gerald “Jerry” Robert Brown

Gerald “Jerry” Robert Brown, 75, of 812 Maple Lane, Clear Lake, died Monday, July 4, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.

Services were held Friday, July 8, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. John R. Tilp officiating. Graveside services were at the St. Lawrence Cemetery, Fairbault, Minn.  Family suggests memorials to Opportunity Village Memorial Fund.

Jerry was born Nov. 29, 1935 in Princeton Village, Minn. the son of William and Mabel (Gohman) Brown.  He graduated in 1953 from Technical High School, St. Cloud, Minn.

After high school he worked on the family farm in River Haven, Minn. and then went to work for Cockshutt Implement, St. Cloud.  Cockshutt changed to the Oliver Company where he worked in the parts department in St. Paul, later to be known as White Farm Equipment Company and transferred to Clear Lake in 1977 as a field service manager. Jerry retired in November 1998.

Jerry enjoyed wood-working, making cradles and rocking horses for his grandchildren.  He loved to attend his grandchildren’s sporting and musical events.  He also enjoyed gardening, bird watching, playing cards, dominos, traveling, volunteering at Opportunity Village and helping his friend Mark on his Christmas Tree Farm.  He was known as a handy man - if he couldn’t fix it, it wasn’t broken. His favorite quote was, “If It Is Not Worth Doing in Excess It’s Not Worth Doing At All”. 

He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Clear Lake.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Mary Brown, Clear Lake; two children, Kari (Sid) Cowherd, Bettendorf, Iowa and Jeff (Jodi) Brown, Albert Lea, Minn.; four grandchildren, Tyler Cowherd, Megan Cowherd, Annelisa Brown and Kylie Brown; three sisters, Shirley (Vern) Haehnel, Pequot Lakes, Minn., Diane (Ernie) Haehnel, Motley, Minn. and Janice Grundhofer, Foley, Minn. and six sisters-in-law, Patricia (Raymond) Schwichtenberg, Maple Grove, Minn., Geraldine (Jim) Stevens, St. Petersburg, Fla., Dorothy (Doug) Paulson, Vancouver, Wash., Carol Eveslage, Wanamingo, Minn., Diane (Wayne) Beumer, Northfield, Minn., and Sharon (Karl) Teater, Inver Grove Heights, Minn. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter; brother, Stanley Brown; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Dean.

Mildred R. Burdette

Mildred R. Burdette, 105, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday July 6, 2011 at Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake. 

Funeral Services were held on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear Lake with the Rev. John R. Tilp officiating. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, July 16, 10:30 a.m. at the Green Acres Cemetery, Scottsdale, Az.  Family suggests memorials to Mildred R. Burdette Memorial Fund.

Mildred was born March 20, 1906, in Wheaton, Ill., the daughter of Eugene and Mary (Bennett) Ryan. She attended school in Wheaton and graduated from Rosary High School in 1923.  After graduation Mildred became a beautician until she married Forrest “Abe” Burdette, May 4, 1935 in Wheaton. They lived in Wheaton until 1950 when they moved to Canton, Mo. where they farmed until 1959. They then moved to Mesa, Az. where she worked as a nursing assistant at Southside District Hospital until she retired. In the summer of 1991 Mildred moved to Clear Lake to be closer to her daughter.

Mildred enjoyed sewing and visiting with family and friends. She was  known as a great cook and believed that you always have to have deserts.  She was the oldest member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Clear Lake.

Mildred is survived by her daughter, Marcia (Mark) McNulty, Clear Lake; Greg Burdette, Enumclaw, Wa. and his fiancé, Jenny Denison; five grandchildren, Maureen (Scott) Dockstader, Ames, Iowa; Michael (Lisa) McNulty, Zimmerman, Minn.; Monica (Jeff) Gribben, Mason City, Iowa; Matthew (Theresa) McNulty, Polk City, Iowa and Mitchell (Melissa) McNulty, Ankeny, Iowa; and 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

John O. Nepstad

John O. Nepstad, 60, of Clear Lake and formerly of Lake Mills, Iowa died Monday, July 4, 2011, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, surrounded by his loving family.

A funeral service was held on Thursday, July 7, 2011, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating.  A private family inurnment will take place at a later date in Memorial Cemetery, Lake Mills.

John Olaf Nepstad was born on Jan. 27, 1951 in Buffalo Center, Iowa the son of George and Clara (Gunderson) Nepstad.  After John’s mother passed away, his father would later remarry to Margaret Infelt and she would love and care for John as her own son. 

John attended and graduated from Lake Mills High School with the class of 1969.  Following high school he furthered his education at Waldorf College, as well as, Iowa State University. In 1971 John was united in marriage to Renee Johnson in Thompson, Iowa.  In 1973 they would celebrate the birth of their son, Matthew.

After college John took over his family’s floor covering business before establishing Nepstad’s True Value Hardware and Rental in Lake Mills, which he would own and operate for 25 years.  In 2003 John and his fiancé, Lori, moved to Clear Lake where he managed real estate. 

For the last few years John had been enjoying the retired life; boating, hunting, fishing, golfing, traveling and spending time with his grandsons.  He always looked forward to his annual fishing trip to Canada with his son, Matt, his friend, David Helgeson, and their many friends that had joined them throughout the years. 

Throughout his life John was involved in many community activities including Ducks Unlimited, the Lake Mills Public Library Board, Boy Scout Leader, member of Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, Rice Lake Country Club, and the Izaak Walton League.

Those left to cherish John’s memory are Lori Thomas of Clear Lake, with whom he shared his life; his son, Matthew (Kriss) Nepstad, Plymouth, Minn.; his two grandsons, Drew and Luke Nepstad; Lori’s children, Chris and Arianna Thomas, Mason City; his brother, Norman (Marti) Karl, Olathe, Kan.; many nieces and nephews; as well as many close friends from near and far.

John is preceded in death by his mother, Clara; his parents, George and Margaret; his sister, Susan; and Lori’s son, Brandon.

Should friends desire, memorials may be left to Hospice of North Iowa in John’s name.

Tressa Mae Waddingham

Tressa Mae Waddingham, age 84, of Clear Lake, died Monday, July 4, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral service were held Saturday, July 9, at the United Methodist Church in Ventura with Pastor Rhonda Preston officiating. Burial was at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.  Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner was in charge of arrangements.

Tressa Mae Waddingham, the daughter of James Lester and Lula Leona (Streeper) Tompkins was born Sept. 19 1926 on the family farm northwest of Ventura, in Ellington Township. She attended the rural schools of Ellington Township and then graduated from Ventura High School in 1944. On Sept. 24, 1944, she was married to Ardell Timothy Waddingham at the United Methodist Church in Klemme, Iowa. They lived on the Waddingham home farm until 1947 when they moved northwest of Ventura to Tressa's home farm. They farmed for a total of 50 years before retiring. She lost Ardell in 200l. Tressa sold the farm home in 2010 and moved to an apartment at Oakwood Assisted Living Center in Clear Lake. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ventura, UMW and the Christian Women's Club in Clear Lake. Tressa enjoyed cooking, baking, entertaining, cross stitching and gardening.

Survivors include three daughters, Kathy Payne (Tom) of Vancouver, British Columbia, and their two children, Tiffany K. Payne (Matt) of Colorado, and Judd T. Payne (Sherami) of Colorado and their two children, Kaelyn and Kody; second daughter, Iris Alt (Jerry) of Earlham, Iowa and third daughter, Valerie Hasbrouck and her two daughters, Vanessa Hasbrouck, who with her partner, Jason Schultz have a new daughter, Aubrey Kay Hasbrouck, and Natalie Hasbrouck, who is a student at Forest City High School; a niece, Bonnie Betts of Minnesota; a nephew, Barry Orcutt of Wisconsin and the Waddingham clan of nieces and nephews in Southern Iowa.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ardell on Feb. 2, 2001; a son, Gary Waddingham in 1983; her parents, James in 1968 and Lula in 1967; and a sister, Violet Otis.

Louise Goetsch

Louise Goetsch, 82, of Hemet, Calif., died May 25, 2011 at her home at the Yorkshire House.

Funeral services will be held in Clear Lake at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 North 4th Street, on Friday, July 15.  Visitation with the family will be from 9 a.m. until 9:45 a.m.  The funeral will begin at 10 a.m. with Pastor Derik Yarian officiating. A brunch will follow after the funeral in the church.  At 11:45 a.m. the Lady of the Lake has been reserved for family and friends to honor Louise.

Louise was born Aug. 7, 1928 in Titonka, Iowa to Dick and Maire Baade.  She was the third of nine children.

Louise graduated from Titonka High School in 1945.  She later went to business college in San Francisco, Calif.  In 1950 she married Harold Buns. He died in 1953.  She later married Harold Goetsch in March 1954.  Together they owned and operated Gene’s Mobil and Clear Lake Cab Company for 14 years.  She later retired to Hemet.

Louise was an amazing mother, sister, and wife.  She gave the word “multi-tasking” its definition.  She enjoyed sewing, knitting, gardening, and was an excellent cook.  She will be remembered for her love for her family, her hard work and her kindness.  She had a spunky spirit with a great attitude and love for life.  She was a friend to all and will be missed by all her knew her.

Louise is survived by her sons,  Rick (Connie Stolzfus), Arnolds Park, Iowa, Mike Buns (Debbie Matney), Ames Iowa, Craig (Judy) Goetsch, Cedar Falls, Iowa, Kurt (Andrea) Goetsch, Ft. Collins, Colo.; Jim Goetsch, Lakewood, Colo., Steve (Carmine) Goetsch, Mason City, Iowa; daughters, Pat (John) Hardie, Phoenix, Az., Lori (Kyle) Scalis of Anchorage, Alaska; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Irene (Don) Baker, Mary Ann (Stanely) Tyron, Viny (Max) Bierstead, Jo Ann Asa; brothers, Raymond Baade and Alfred (Phyllis) Baade; sister-in-law, Mary Lee Baade; brother-in-law Dale Goetsch, six nephews; 12 nieces; and her best friend and brother-in-law, Jim Barboni who was her pal and very supportive in her final years.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Harold Buns, Harold Goetsch; son, Jeff Goetsch; sister, Delores Baade; and brother, Walter Baade.

Robert Clarence Larson Sr.

Robert Clarence Larson Sr., 83, of Clear Lake, passed away on Sunday July 10, 2011 at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.   

Funeral services will be Thursday, July 14, 11 a.m. at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church with the Rev. Diana Hoover officiating.  Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery with military honors provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W.  Visitation will be one hour before the service on Thursday at the church.  Family suggests memorials to Robert Larson Memorial Fund. 

Robert (Bob) Larson was born on May 9, 1928, on a farm near Kanawha, Iowa, to Alvin and Parney Larson. He attended primary school in a one-room, country school and graduated from Kanawha High School in 1945.   He honorably served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII and the Korean War.  For his distinguished service in Korea he was awarded the Bronze Star with the combat V for valor.  He was an employee of the Lehigh Portland Cement Company for over 30 years.  

While shopping in Mason City, he met and fell in love with Florence Fountas, who was working at the dime store.  After a brief courtship, Bob and Flo were married on Dec. 18, 1948.  The couple settled in Clear Lake, partially because it was a great community to raise a family, but mainly because the fishing was good.  Bob was an avid sportsman and he loved to spend time fishing on Clear Lake with friends and family.   When the water was too rough, he was often busy documenting family history, using his talents to produce a work of art, or simply enjoying the company of his family, friends, his dog, and the large number of birds and squirrels that frequented his backyard feeders.    

He is survived by his wife, Florence Larson, of Clear Lake; four children and their spouses, Bonnie Larson, of Boone, Iowa, Robert Jr. and Mickie Larson, of Clear Lake, Bill and Kim Larson, of Clear Lake and Brian and Susan Larson, of Ames, Iowa; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one brother, Max Larson, of West Des Moines, Iowa; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Stella Rodemeyer, of McAllen, Texas, Jim and Joyce Fountas, of Mason City, Jim and Mona Hennigar of Fort Madison, Iowa Darlene Fountas, of Newton, Iowa Kelli Fountas, of Mason City, Tom and Bev Fountas, of Racine, Wis.; many nieces and nephews; and many friends.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Parney; his brother, Russell; his father- and mother-in-law, John and Cynthia Fountas, his brothers- and sisters-in-law Dalton Rodemeyer, George and Barb Fountas, Geraldine Fountas, Nick Fountas, and Stan Fountas.

Katherine (Kavars) Kiroff

Katherine (Kavars) Kiroff, 82, of Mason City, died Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.

A funeral service was held Saturday, July 16, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City with the Reverend Joseph Mirowski officiating.  Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Should friends desire, memorials may be directed to the Katherine Kiroff Memorial.

Katherine Kavars was born Jan. 18, 1929, in Mason City, the daughter of Nick and Bertha (DeGraff) Kavars.  She graduated from Mason City High School.  After high school she worked various jobs.  Katherine was united in marriage to Stephen Kiroff. To this union three children were born.  She worked several years for Armour-Decker Meat Packing Plant.

Katherine enjoyed playing cards, Bingo, Pinochle, and tending to her flower garden.  Her greatest love was spending time with her children and grandchildren.  She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Katherine is survived by her children, Mark (Penny Sandvig) Kiroff, Clear Lake, Sheldon Kiroff and Debera (Reinhold) Speckmeier, all of Mason City; grandchildren, Jacob and Cody Kiroff, Reinhold Speckmeier, Zakariah, Allison and Matthew Kiroff; four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Marlene Kavars, Mason City; along with numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Katherine is preceded in death by her parents, Nick and Bertha Kavars; husband, Stephen Kiroff; and siblings, Delma, George, John, Steve, James, and Gus Kavars.

Martha Huntington

Martha Huntington, 50, of 101 South 9th St., Clear Lake, died Friday, July 15, 2011 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.  A memorial service was held Tuesday, July 19, at the United Methodist Church, 508 2nd Ave North, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Diana Hoover officiating.

Memorials may be made to Wright on the Park, Inc., The Clear Lake Arts Center, the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, the Clear Lake Schools Foundation or Hospice of North Iowa.

Martha Jane Huntington was born Dec. 4, 1960 in Grundy Center, Iowa to Robert W. and Mary Jane (Arnold) Huntington.  She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1979 and Iowa State University in 1983.  She earned a Masters of Architecture degree from Iowa State University in 1992.

Martha worked in healthcare marketing before returning to school to pursue a career in architecture.  She worked with a firm in Dubuque, Iowa before returning to North Iowa to work with Bergland + Cram.  While there, she worked as a project manager and became a vice president with the firm in 2005.  She worked on several projects in north Iowa, most notably the restoration/rehabilitation of the Historic Park Inn Hotel/City National Bank in Mason City, originally designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake, served on the boards of the Clear Lake Arts Center, Wright on the Park, Inc., and the Clear Lake Schools Foundation.  She also served on the State Nominations Review Committee, which oversees buildings being named to the National Register of Historic Places.

Martha is survived by her father, Robert Huntington, Clear Lake; a brother, Brad Huntington and his wife, Loree, Thompson, Iowa; two nieces, Erin Huntington and Ashley Huntington, Thompson and a nephew, Blake Huntington, Thompson.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, her mother and an aunt.

Donald Maynard Carolus

Donald Maynard Carolus, 78, of 511 N. Van Buren, Mason City, Iowa died Saturday, July 16, 2011 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 19, at the Grace Evangelical Free Church, Mason City, with Pastor Nick Daugherty officiating.  Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.  Family suggests memorials to Donald M. Carolus Memorial Fund.

Donald was born Sept. 11, 1932 in Britt, Iowa the son of Ralph and Emma (Lassahn) Carolus.  He grew up in the north Iowa area.  He worked for Home Insulation and later started his own business known as Carolus Contracting.  He helped his children and grandchildren in starting their own contracting business.   He married Jean Peasley on Feb. 16, 1980 in Casper, Wyoming.

He enjoyed traveling, going out west hunting, telling jokes and keeping busy.  He was known for his amazing memory.

He was a member of Grace Evangelical Free Church, Mason City.

Donald is survived by his wife, Jean Carolus, Mason City; four children, Jerry Peasley, Mason City, Sheila Callow and her husband, Ron Sr., Clear Lake, Sharon Peaslee and her husband, Mike Burns, Hines, Minn. and Rozanna Theisen and her husband, Michael, Blackduck, Minn.; 20 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; twin brothers, Merlyn Carolus and his wife, Marilyn, Harlingen, Texas and Merwin Carolus and his wife, Ardie, Mason City; a sister, Lorraine Bartleson, Clear Lake; sister-in-law, Shirley Carolus, Buckeye, Iowa and numerous nephews and nieces. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Clarence and Ralph Carolus and his wife, Betty; and brother-in-law, Ben Bartleson.

Raymond “Chan” Ward

Raymond “Chan” Ward, 81, of 3714 North Shore Drive, Clear Lake, died Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, July 26, at the Evangelical Free Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Randy Vaage officiating.  Inurnment will take place at a later date. 

Memorials may be directed to Opportunity Village or Hospice of North Iowa.

Raymond "Chan" Ward was born Nov. 1, 1929, in Wesley, Iowa, the son of George and Edith Ward.  He attended country school near Wesley and graduated from Wesley High School in 1947.  Chan married Rosemary Olsen in June of 1950 in Clear Lake.  He was a dairy distributor for Farmer's Co-op Dairy, Marigold Dairy and Kemps Dairy for 34 years, retiring in 1992.  Chan was the manager of Lakeside Acres Mobile Home Park for 10 years before moving to their home at 3714 North Shore Drive.

Chan and Rosemary enjoyed traveling and spending the winter months in Fort Myers Beach, Fla.  Chatting with and getting to know people wherever he went was Chan's favorite pastime.  He was sincerely interested in other's life stories and he loved to share stories of his own.  His smile and friendly nature were well known in Clear Lake.  During his years as a milkman he became a close and trusted friend of generations of full-time and summer residents.

Chan is survived by his wife, Rosemary; son Douglas (Linda) Ward of Clear Lake; daughter Diane (David) Parks of Clear Lake; son David (Jacque) of Monroe, Conn.; six grandchildren, Adam Tyler of Clear Lake, Amanda (Peter) Chidister of North Liberty, Iowa, Dustin (Melodee) Ward of Fertile, Iowa, Christopher (Abigail) Ward of Glen Allen, Va., Benjamin Ward of Morristown, N.J. and Casey (Rodrigo) Ward of Danbury, Conn.; three step-grandchildren, Vicki (Nick) Murphy of London, UK, Davi (Bob) Jakl of Chicago, Ill., and Zach Parks of Kansas City, Mo.; eight great-granchildren, Ivy Hogg, Abbie and Olivia Chidister, Samuel and Eliza Ward, CeAnn and Travis Jakl and Leo Henry Murphy.

Chan was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald Ward; sisters, Ruth Neuhring and Dorothy Haag; and nephews, Don Shahan and Monte Haag.

Ilse J. Bruntjen

Ilse J. Bruntjen, a resident of Apple Valley in Clear Lake, passed away Friday, July 22, 2011 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa, surrounded by her family.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 27, 10:30 a.m., at Galilean Lutheran Church, 4454 255th St. Highway 18 West, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Scot McCluskey officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. A private family inurnment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery at a later time. 

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa in Ilse’s name.

Ilse was born Feb. 3, 1923, the daughter of Gustav and Ella (Läwmrich) Rönnau in Hamburg, Germany. Following two years of college, Ilse worked for the government in Germany during WWII as a cartographer (map drawer).

On June 24, 1944 Ilse married Hans W. Bruntjen in Hamburg. This union would be blessed with three daughters.

Following WWII Ilse and Hans moved to the United States and eventually settled in Clear Lake.  Ilse loved spending time with her friends and socializing throughout the community.  For many years Ilse worked as a nurse’s aide at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.  She was a former volunteer in many organizations, including Meals on Wheels and Hospice of North Iowa, as well as having been a former member of the Park and Rec. Board and donating countless hours to the Clear Lake elementary school where she helped students practice their reading. 

Ilse was a member of the 21st Century Club, Galilean Lutheran Church, the Thursday morning breakfast group, and the birthday group.

She is survived by her three daughters, Jean Harris, Katherine Cairns, and Teresa Bowen; grandchildren, Tara Carew and Andrew Chamberlain; three great-grandchildren, Morgan and Maddison Carew and Taiyo Chamberlain.

Ilse was preceded in death by her husband, Hans, May 16, 2007.

Steven E. Gould

Steven E. Gould, 56, of 1101 S. 9th Pl., Clear Lake, died Sunday, July 24, 2011 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating.  The family will greet friends one hour before the service.  Family suggests memorials to Steven E. Gould Memorial Fund.

Steve was born Oct. 6, 1954 in Mason City, the son of Burnes and Buena (Helm) Gould. Steve graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1973 and continued his education at Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa and A.I.B. Business College in Des Moines, Iowa.

He worked in the office for a pipeline in Texas and later moved back to Clear Lake. He worked for Winnebago Industries, Forest City, Iowa for over 27 years.  Steve married Dora Garza on Feb. 23, 1982 in Kanawha, Iowa.

He enjoyed playing sports in high school and continued playing softball, golf and bowling. He made the comment that he had accomplished a grand slam, hole-in-one and bowled a 300 game. He also enjoyed fishing, traveling, playing cards, camping, attending his children's athletic events and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes.  He also enjoyed going on walks with his close friends and dogs. He was an avid reader. The last three years he especially enjoyed traveling with his wife, Dora, to special places.

Steve is survived by his wife, Dora Gould, Clear Lake; four children, Danielle Hall, Killeen, Texas, Daphne Bernard and Jerry Sawyer, Marshalltown, Iowa, Joel Gould and Faye Nuddleman, Clear Lake, and Toni Gould, Mason City; seven grandchildren, Kiersten Hall, Katlynn Hall, Jacob Hall, Kelsey Hall, Kyli Jacobsen, Dylan Jacobsen and Caleb Bernard; three sisters, Karen (Robert) Petznick, Lee’s Summit, Mo., Judy Bartlett, Decorah, Iowa and Donna (Dennis) Petersen, Clear Lake; several nieces and nephews and his best friend and companion, Winston. 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Edward Oscar Tosel

Edward Oscar Tosel, 92, Mason City, Iowa, went to be with his Heavenly Father, Sunday, July 24, 2011, at his home surrounded by family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, July 29, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street N.E. Mason City, with Pastor Lionel Hart officiating.  A family graveside service will be held at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City with full military honors conducted by members of the Mason City Veteran’s Memorial Association.

The family will greet friends and family from 4 until 7 p.m. on Friday, July 29, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street N.E. Mason City.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Edward Tosel Memorial in care of Stella Tosel.  Memorials will later be distributed to children’s organizations in Edward’s memory.

Edward Oscar Tosel was born April 5, 1919, in Manly, Iowa the son of James and Anna (Johnson) Tosel.  He graduated from Mason City High School. Edward was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Stella VanLaningham, on July 30, 1938. To this union five children were born.  Edward worked at King Brothers, Chrysler Auto dealership, Wayland Auto and retired after working at Midland Co-op.

Edward was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-great-grandfather. He enjoyed family and friends. He was most happy when he was camping or on a fishing trip with his family.  Edward loved woodworking, making jewelry, and traveling.  Edward and Stella wintered in Arizona for several years.  He was a member of Home Fellowship Church.

Edward is survived by his wife of 74 years, Stella Tosel, Mason City; children, Gary (Julie) Tosel, Omaha, Neb., Kevin Tosel, Chandler, Az., Jean Howell, Clear Lake, Dima (Dennis) Krull, Ankeny, Iowa, Judy (Dennis) Schmidt, Mason City; grandchildren, Rhonda (Jeff) Nabity, Lisa (George) Rakes, Eric (Linda) Howell, Penny Axiotis, Chad (Anna) Krull, Heidi (Jason) Vessely, Wendy Hutson, Barry (Marykay) Schmidt, Randy Schmidt, Casey Schmidt, Megan (Darin) Chettick; great-grandchildren, Gary James Rakes, Susan Rakes, Cody and Jamie Howell, Nick Axiotis, Caity and Alyssa Krull, Camden and Calvin Vessely, Kyle and Kayleigh Eden, Cassidy Gordon, Tice McKenzie, Ben, Ryan, Jennie Macy, Ike, and Eli Schmidt, McKinley and Dane Chettick; and one great-great-granddaughter, Chloee Howell; siblings, Sy Tosel and Ava Coolican, both of Mason City; along with numerous nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

Edward is preceded in death by his parents; great-grandson, Chris Axiotis; brother, Elmer Tosel; and sister, Maxine Judd.

Frederick "Fred" Koch

Frederick "Fred" Koch, former president of Metro Bancorporation, parent of Waterloo Savings Bank (now US Bank) and a longtime summer resident of Clear Lake, died July 11. He was 84. He had suffered without complaint several physical complications of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). The Koch family has enjoyed happy summers at the Clear Lake Outing Club since 1967.

Survivors include his daughter, Katy Koch Campbell of Edina, Minn.; his son, Fritz Koch of Ward, Colo.; grandsons, Jack Frederick Campbell and Baxter Quigley Koch.

He was preceded in death in 2010 by his wife of 53 years, Beverly Baker Koch.

A memorial service luncheon is scheduled for noon on Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Elks Lodge in Waterloo, Iowa. Burial will be in the Des Moines Masonic Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

Fred will be remembered for his gracious presence at the side of his socially present wife, and as a true gentleman who gifted his friends and family with a sparkle in his beautiful blue eyes and ample doses of dry wit.
