Judy Kleckner

    Judy Kleckner, 49, passed away Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center after a courageous five-year battle with cancer.  Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Altoona, Iowa.  Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St., Des Moines, Iowa.
    Judy is survived by her husband, Scott; daughters, Dana and Paige; mother, Arlis Black; sister, Patty (Jeff) Jensen; brothers, Dennis (Koleen) Black and Jim (Pam) Black; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dean and Natalie Kleckner; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mark (Kimberly) Kleckner, Kirk (Karen) Kleckner, Rhonda (Kirk) Kelloway and Lisa (Travis) Winkey; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family members.  
    She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Black.
    Memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Lutheran Church, Altoona; Focus on the Family, Colorado Springs, Colo.; or Iowa Christian Academy, West Des Moines, Iowa.

Tom Lincoln

   

Thomas (Tom) A. Lincoln 59, 956 N. 9th Street West, Clear Lake, died on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007 at home.  He had courageously battled a severe illness for three years.
    A celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. 4th Street, in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating.  Inurnment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery. with military honors by Clear Lake V.F.W.
    Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 16 from 3 - 7  p.m. at the Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake, and then one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Memorials can be made to the Tom Lincoln Memorial Fund.
    Tom was 59 years young.  He graduated from high school in 1966 and volunteered for service with the U.S. Army from 1966-1969 with a tour of duty in Vietnam.  Tom later graduated from Iowa Lakes Community College and Buena Vista University magnum cum laude.
    In 1968, Tom married Judith Schuller. In 1987, Tom was united in marriage to Debra Eberhardt.  They combined their families and together provided for seven children, Tom Jr., Todd, Travis, Josh, Tracy, Zach, and Beau.
    His public service career spanned over 30 years, including serving the community of Clear Lake from 1978 to 2001.  During this time, he held the offices of City Comptroller and City Administrator.  He continued serving people as an elected member of the Clear Lake Sanitary District Board of Trustees.
    After leaving his role with the City of Clear Lake, Tom, together with Deb and his family, first leased and later purchased the Barrel Drive In.  Together they continued the business until Tom’s health was not sufficient to continue on a day to day basis.
    Tom’s grandfather once told him not to take more than you give in life.  Tom believed strongly that each of us needs to give of ourselves to help others.  Over the years he performed volunteer service to youth programs, to his church, and to his community.  He treasured his 15 years of service as a volunteer fireman with the Clear Lake Fire Department.  He felt it was an honor to be allowed to serve others when they most needed help.  Tom’s hobbies included golf, and he was an avid Hawkeye fan.
    Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Deb; his children, Tom Jr. (Cathy), Todd (Sandy), Travis (Mary), Josh, Tracy (Bob), Zach, and Beau; his siblings, Gary (Sharon), Rick (Diane), and Tammy (Charlie); his grandchildren, Jordan, Isaiah, Dylan, Veronica, Abby, Payton, Meredith, Madison, Carter, Hunter, Gabe, Nathan and Paul;  a mother-in-law, Donna Eberhardt; two sister-in-laws, Jo (Chuck) Younke, Marsha (Mark) Koerber; a brother-in-law, Bryan (Denise) Eberhardt; many nieces and nephews; and many friends.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and a father-in-law, John Eberhardt.
    Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

Larry A. Miller

    Larry A. Miller, 73, of Fort Madison, Iowa, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007 in Des Moines, Iowa.  A memorial service was held Tuesday, Oct. 16, at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory in Fort Madison. Memorial contributions may be left at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory.
    Larry was born Feb. 13, 1934, in Clear Lake to Willie E. and Frances A. (Ott) Miller. He married Norma Nelson in Clear Lake on Dec. 18, 1955. He was an instrumental music instructor at Fort Madison High School for 33 years. He was a member of the Union Presbyterian Church, the Odd Fellows Lodge, ASBDA, IBA, Phi Mu Alpha and a life member of NEA and ISEA.  He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was an avid Iowa fan and golfer.
    He is survived by his wife, Norma; two daughters, Cristi (Jim) Prenger of Quincy, Ill. and Stephanie (Fred) Knoch of Fort Madison; and two grandchildren, Matthew Prenger and Jeffrey Prenger of Quincy.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and one sister.

Eleanor Hartigan

Eleanor Hartigan, 86, of Clear Lake, formerly of Fort Dodge, Iowa passed away Oct. 10, 2007 in Mason City, Iowa.
    A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Oct. 15, at Corpus Christi Church with the Rev. Edward Girres officiating. Burial of her cremains will be held in Corpus Christi Cemetery.  
    Eleanor is survived by her husband, Tom; two daughters, Patricia Sund (Chuck), of Grayslake, Ill. and Leigh Trembath (Stuart), of Clear Lake; four grandchildren, Erin Sund of Chicago, Ill., Brendan Sund of Huntington Beach, Calif., Lauren Trembath and Hannah Trembath of Clear Lake.  She also is survived by her sister, Ruth French, of Oskaloosa, Iowa.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, John Crumbaugh.
    Eleanor Louise Crumbaugh was born on March 7, 1921 in Oskaloosa to Dr. Forrest L. Crumbaugh and Bessie Sollenberger Crumbaugh.  She graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1939 and received a B.A. summa cum laude from William Penn College in 1943.  She completed graduate work at Iowa State University, Drake University, the University of Northern Colorado and Montana State University.
    Eleanor married Thomas Hartigan at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Oskaloosa, on Oct. 25, 1947.  Eleanor’s teaching career began in Iowa at Jordan High School in 1943.  She next taught at Lacey High School from 1944 to 1949, and
then Platteville High School in Colorado from 1949 to 1952.
    The family moved back to Iowa and Eleanor took a leave of absence from teaching to stay home with her children.  Once both daughters were in school, she returned to teach English and psychology at Fort Dodge Senior High School for 21 years, retiring in 1983.
    Eleanor was a life member of the National Education Association, a former member of Webster County Retired Teachers, Catholic Daughters of America, member of Questers, book clubs, art club, Friends of Fort Dodge Public
Library, Trinity Regional Hospital Auxiliary, and Clear Lake Arts Center. In addition, she belonged to several bridge clubs and was involved in antiquing and genealogical research.  She was a life-long learner with a passion for reading and the arts.
    After having been a part of the Fort Dodge community for 48 years, the Hartigans moved to Clear Lake in 2002 to be closer to their granddaughters.
    Despite her limited physical abilities and her short time in Clear Lake, she made numerous friends and became an avid armchair bird watcher.  She was a long time member of Corpus Christi Church in Fort Dodge and most recently a
parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church in Clear Lake.
    Eleanor was a dedicated teacher who always took a sincere interest and pride in her students’ accomplishments.  She devoted her life to her family and students.  She will be missed by her family and many friends.
    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Blanden Art Museum or to the Fort Dodge Public Library.

Judy Lang

    Judy Lyn Lang, 58, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street N.E. Mason City, with Pastor Tom Healey officiating.  Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service Thursday.
    Judy Lyn Poole was born July 2, 1949, in Mason City, the daughter of Forest and Wilma (Lemon) Poole.  She attended Mason City Schools.  Judy worked for Yelland and Hanes Printing Company.  She was united in marriage to David Lang on Aug. 12, 1995.
    Judy enjoyed playing yahtzee, Phase 10, shopping, going out to eat, the outdoors, fishing, hunting, camping, and collecting Beanie Babies.  Judy loved watching her son, Jamie, shoot pool. She greatly enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She touched a lot of hearts and will be greatly missed.
    She is survived by her son, Jamie Loeckle and fiancé, Shana Bamrick, Clear Lake; special daughter, Vanessa Debell, Sioux City, Iowa; siblings, Bonnie Mussman and Bill Klene, Clear Lake, Paulette O’Dell, Clear Lake, Bob (Cherryl) Poole, Swaledale, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends; special friends, Sue VanOsten, Mason City, cousin Janet (Alan) Wildrick, Bondurant, Iowa, Tammy Freeman, Sue Hesley, Berma Cummings, Jean Leragen, and Nikki Kuntz, all of Mason City.
    She is preceded in death by her grandparents; parents; husband; infant brother, Robert Dean Poole and brother, Denny Poole.

Frederick Luker

Fredrick William Jacob Luker, 92, of Clear Lake, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.
    A funeral service was held Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating.  Burial was in Grant Center Cemetery, rural Fertile, Iowa.
    The family of Fredrick William Jacob Luker would like to suggest that memorial contributions be made to Zion Lutheran Church Intersection, Clear Lake Noon Lions, Clear Lake Senior Citizens Center, or to Sr. Patricia Cruise, SC-Covenant House of New York in his memory.
    Fred Luker was born on Aug. 24, 1915, in Crown, Minn., the son of Henry and Magdelina (Froehlich) Luker.  He was baptized at Crown Lutheran Church and confirmed at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Garner, Iowa.  He was educated in the rural schools in Minnesota and St. John’s School in Garner.  He was united in marriage to Evelyn Humphrey on Feb. 16, 1936, in Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, and to this union two children were born Larry and Neal.  Fred farmed for 38 years in the Worth and Cerro Gordo County area and also sold life insurance for many years.
    He was united in marriage to Judith Draves on Sept. 6, 1992, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.
    Fred enjoyed fishing, reading, volunteering, visiting with family and friends, music especially playing the violin and harmonica.
    Fred served as president of the Worth County Farm Bureau and was also a member of the Cerro Gordo County Farm Bureau.  He was a former member of the Fertile Lutheran Church and served as deacon and Sunday school teacher.  He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake where he served on the Visitation Team.   He was a member of the Clear Lake Noon Lions Club and was awarded the Warren Coleman Honorary Award in 2005.  He was also a member of the Clear Lake Senior Citizens Center.
    Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Judith Luker of Clear Lake; his son, Neal (Jane) Luker of Fulton, Ill.; his daughter-in-law, Marian Luker of Clear Lake; four grandchildren, Jill (Dan) Nonnweiler of Mason City, Jody (Gene) Satern of League City, Texas, Joyce (Bob) Wagner of Ventura, and Todd (Lisa) Luker of Clear Lake; nine great-grandchildren, Jeff (Tiffany) Nonnweiler of Nora Springs, Iowa, Kaley Nonnweiler and fiancé, Scott Little, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Jacob Nonnweiler of Mason City, Jon (Argelia) Satern of League City, Texas, Lindsey (Matt) McGuire of Little Elm, Texas, Robert and Ryan Wagner of Ventura, and Hadley and Henry Luker of Clear Lake; his brother, Gilbert Luker, of Mason City; as well as other relatives and many friends.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Evelyn, who died on Dec. 4, 1990; son, Larry Luker, who died on Nov. 7, 2005; two brothers, Adolph and Arnold Luker, and three sisters, Leona Hill, Erma Hall, and Esther Luker.

Frankie Bowcock

   Frankie L. Bowcock, 88, of Mason City, Iowa died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007,  at Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa, with her family at her side. Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 5, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Mason City, with Pastor Patti Aurand officiating.  Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery.  
    Frankie was born March 27, 1919, the daughter of Frank and Etta (Peck) Holt in Madison S.D. After her mothers’ death in 1920 Frankie came to live with her aunt and uncle in Clear Lake. She graduated in 1937 from Clear Lake High School and later graduated from nurses training in Sioux City, Iowa as an RN. She later joined
the Army Nurse Corp where she proudly and gladly served her country in England during World War II. After her discharge she was employed at Park Hospital in Mason City as an RN. She married Lewis T. Bowcock on April 22, 1946 at the First Congregational Church in Mason City. She was a loving mother to Dan, Ted, Chris, and Linda. With her devout faith, strength, and great sense of humor, she was a tiny woman with a big heart.
    She loved gardening, baking bread and was known for her Halloween cookies. She was a long time member of the First Congregational Church in Mason City, where she was active in its service. She served
as a scout leader and loved working with kids. She loved animals and had numerous adopted pets. She enjoyed collecting small treasures such as spoons, animal figurines and anything with a pansy on it.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis; eldest son, Dan and siblings.
    Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Ted (Sue) Bowcock of Owatonna, Minn., Chris (Raelynn) Bowcock of Palm City, Fla. and a daughter, Linda Bowcock, of Mason City, and her beloved cat, Snoopy.
    Memorials are preferred to Frankie Bowcock Memorial Fund.

Noel Edgell

Noel L. (Speed) Edgell, 3400 North Shore Drive, Clear Lake, previously of Henderson, Minn. died Tuesday, Oct. 2, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit at the age of 72.
    A Celebration of Life was held Oct. 6 at Hillcrest United Methodist Church, Bloomington, Minn. Pastor Charles Holladay officiated.  A private family burial service will be held at a later date.  In place of flowers or plants, memorials may be made to the Noel L. Edgell Memorial Fund.
    Noel LeRoy (Speed) Edgell was born on Dec. 24, 1934 in Minneapolis, Minn., the son of William  and Alice (Nelson) Edgell.  He attended Central High School in Minneapolis.
    On Jan. 17, 1953 Noel was united in marriage to Helen Sturges in the Little Brown Church in the Vail, Nashua, Iowa. To this union was born four children, Susan, William, Robert, and Richard.
    In 1970, the couple settled in Henderson.  For several years Noel worked as a criminal rehab counselor for the Minnesota Department of Corrections.  After leaving his job due to ill health, Noel started Edgell’s Classic Imports in Henderson.  He retired in 2004.
    Noel was a member of the Mercedes Benz Club of America and numerous other area car clubs where he was active for several years.  He also was a member of the World Wide Church of God, Boy Scouts, National Jogging Association, National Judo and Karate Association, and Hog – Harley Owner’s Group.
    He enjoyed visiting and traveling with his numerous friends, riding his Harley Road King motorcycle and he was an avid collector.  He loved playing with his pets, Duchess, Duke and Jordan.
    The joy of his life was spending time with his granddaughter, Brandy, his monthly dinners with his brothers, visiting with his family and friends, and enjoying the lake view from his den balcony on North Shore Drive in Clear Lake.
    Noel is survived by Elizabeth Jung;  his children, Robert Edgell, Le Sueur, Minn., Richard (Linda) Edgell, Little Falls, Minn.;  his brothers, Glenn (Judy) Edgell, Minnetonka, Minn., Dale (Ruth) Edgell, Shakopee, Minn.; his granddaughter, Brandy Edgell, Seattle, Wash.; as well as his daughter-in-law, Joyce Edgell Thomas,  Henderson, and Elizabeth’s children, Susan Jung and her children Chris and Cathleen, Mark Jung (Vicki Bonson), Matt Jung, and David Daniel; nephews, niece and numerous friends.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Alice; wife, Helen, in 1999; his son, William; infant daughter, Susan Marie and nephew, Brian.
    Ward-Van Slyke Funeral Home, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

Jackie Hughes

    Jackie Hughes, 70, of Clear Lake and formerly of Rolfe, Iowa, died Oct. 31, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City, Iowa. Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 2, at the Forum at Opportunity Village in Clear Lake with Pastors Will Hunsaker and Rich Murray officiating.  Burial was in Clinton-Garfield Cemetery at Rolfe.
    Jackie William Hughes was born May 8, 1937 near Rolfe.  He was the son of Harris and Erma (Colee) Hughes.  Jackie was educated at Rolfe and graduated from Rolfe High School in 1958.  He worked at Beckard’s Chicken Hatchery and later for his brother at Jerry’s Super Valu.  Jackie moved to Clear Lake in 1974 and made his home at various locations within the Opportunity Village.
    Jackie was a member of the Methodist Church in Rolfe and Clear Lake.  He currently attended the Open Bible Church. He belonged to the Clear Lake Lions Club and the Village Arrowhead Club.  He liked to bowl and go to Camp Courageous. He especially loved spending time with his many friends at Opportunity Village.
    Survivors include his sisters, Susanne Stockwell of Laurens, Iowa and Linda Kemery of Lenox, Iowa; sister-in-law, Judy Hughes of Eden Prarie, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.
    Jackie was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Shirley Herscher; and brothers, Kenneth, Jerry and Gene.

Paul E. Simmer

    Paul E. Simmer, 56, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2007 at his home.  Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 5, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating.  Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Military honors were provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W.  The family suggests memorials to the Paul E. Simmer Memorial Fund.
    Paul was born April 30, 1951 in Dolliver, Iowa, the son of Donald and Margaret (Rosander) Simmer.  He attended school in Dolliver and Clear Lake, graduating from Clear Lake in 1969.  On May 29, 1974 Paul married Lorraine Scott in Clear Lake.  He worked at numerous jobs.  He served as a Deputy Sheriff for the Geary County (Junction City) Kansas Sheriffs Dept.  He also served as a police officer for the City of Laurens (Iowa) Police Department and the City of Pocahontas (Iowa) Police Department achieving the rank of Captain.  He served as records clerk and the night shift commander.  Paul worked at Econo Foods as dairy/shift manager and then worked for Dean Snyder Construction Company in Clear Lake.  Due to his health he was forced to retire.  Paul battled lymphoma and leukemia for many years.
    Paul enjoyed tinkering in his woodshop know as “Grandpas Hobby Hut.”  He was proud of the swinging cradle he made for his first granddaughter.  He enjoyed planting and taking care of his flowers, putting puzzles together and working crossword puzzles.  He also collected toy emergency vehicles.
    Paul served in the US Army for three years as a military policeman.  He was a graduate of the Iowa law Enforcement Academy, a former Clear Lake Fire Fighter and was the past president of the Pocahontas County Police Officers Association.
    Paul is survived by his three sons, Derek and his wife, Angele of Huntsville, Ala., Sean, who is serving with the US Marines in Parris Island, S.C. and Christopher of Atlanta, Ga.;  two granddaughters, Jordyn and Jayme Simmer of Huntsville; his mother, Margaret Simmer of Clear Lake; three sisters, Karen Olinger, Clear Lake, Dixie Haugen and husband, Larry, Clear Lake and Sandy Katz and her husband, Dale, Mason City, Iowa; eight brothers, Larry Simmer, Clear Lake, Richard Simmer, Costa Mesa, Calif., Robert Simmer and his wife, Colleen, Clear Lake, Dennis Simmer, Clear Lake, Francis Simmer and his special friend, Shelley Paulson, Ventura, Dale Simmer, Mason City, Tim Simmer, Clear Lake, and Tom Simmer, Clear Lake; and sisters-in-law Paula, Prescott, Iowa and Brenda Simmer, Ventura.
     He was preceded in death by his daughter, Grace Renee; his father, Donald Simmer Sr.; two brothers, Fredrick and Donald Jr.; a brother-in-law, Merle Olinger; a sister-in-law, Shelley Simmer; and his grandparents.
    Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

James Frampton

    James Darrell Frampton, 83, 1200 10th Ave N., Clear Lake, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.  A memorial service was held Friday, Nov. 2, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church with the Rev. Diana Hoover officiating.  Inurnment was at the Clear Lake Cemetery with military honors provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Post 4868.  Memorials may be given to the James D. Frampton Memorial Fund.
     Jim was born June 22, 1924 in Boone, Iowa, the son of Willard and Goldie (Harden) Frampton.  He attended school in Jordon Township.  After graduating he enlisted in the United States Navy.  He served during WWII and had an honorable discharge.  Jim married Elsie Grace Walsh on Aug. 8, 1946 in Boone.  Jim and Elsie operated a bowling alley and night club in Roseberg, Ore.  They moved to Clear Lake in 1964.  Jim started working for the Clear Lake police force in 1970 in law enforcement.  He became the Clear Lake Police Chief in 1976, retiring in 1987.
     Jim enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an avid bowler, and was in the Clear Lake Hall of Fame.  He loved playing pool with the boys at the V.F.W., gambling, and Iowa Hawkeye athletics.  He also loved fishing and watching his grandkids play sports.
     Jim is survived by three children, Kerry James Frampton and his wife, Dee, Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., Kenneth John Frampton and his wife, Deborah, Clear Lake, and Kathy Jean Astor and her husband, Bill, Clear Lake; six grandchildren, Jamie, Kelly, Kerry Jay, Brandon and his wife, Jenny, David and Ethan; step-grandchild, Jamie Jo; great-grandson, Dilyn Kaj; brothers, DeWayne Frampton and his wife, Marilyn, Boone, and George Frampton, Michigan; sister, Goldie, Michigan; nephews, Tim Frampton and Kevin Frampton; and cousin, Dean Kemmerer, Clear Lake.
     Jim was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Elsie, on Oct. 9, 2004.

James Frampton

    James Darrell Frampton, 83, 1200 10th Ave N., Clear Lake, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.  A funeral service will be held Friday, Nov. 2, 10:30 a.m. at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 508 2nd Ave N., with the Rev. Diana Hoover officiating.  Inurnment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery with military honors provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Post 4868.  Visitation with the family will be Thursday, Nov. 1, from 5 – 7 p.m. at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.  Memorials may be given to the James D. Frampton Memorial Fund.

Alvin Martin

    Alvin Martin, 78, of Louisville, Ky. and formerly of Mason City, Iowa died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007 after a lengthy illness.
    Visitation will be held Sunday, Nov. 4, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake. Inurnment was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with Pastor Tom Healy officiating.
    Memorials may be made in his memory to Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 North Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, IA 50401 or Hospice of Louisville, 1025 New Moody Lane, La Grange, KY 40031.
    Alvin was born in Mason City on Nov. 2, 1928.  Alvin graduated from Mason City High School.  He was united in marriage to Mardell Klein; to this union three children were born. They moved to Louisville in 1962. He worked at Kentucky State Reformatory in La Grange, Ky., until his retirement.  He enjoyed working on his tractor, fishing, boating and spending time at his lake home in Alabama.   
    He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mardell Klein Martin; sons, Thomas E. Martin (Marsha), of Louisville, Dr. John D. Martin (Brenda), of Leesburg, Va.; grandchildren, Stacie Martin Gibson (Shane), of Louisville, Kelly Martin of Louisville, Chelsea Martin and David Martin of Leesburg, Va.; brothers, William, of Terre Haute, Ind., Clayton, of Charles City, Iowa, Eli, of Ashland, Ky., and Harlan Martin, of Donnellson, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Mary (Richard) Mott, Clear Lake, Joan (Russ) Oehlert, Sheffield, Iowa and Helen Klein, Mason City; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    He is preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter, Rita Martin.
    He will best be remembered for his love of family (especially the times together at Lake Martin), his tenacious can-do spirit and his extraordinary courage.
    Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

John Tyler, Jr

    John William Tyler, Jr., 56, passed away on Oct. 26, 2007 near his home in Dallas, Texas to continue making music with his Savior on a much bigger stage.  
    Born Nov. 7, 1950 in Mason City, Iowa to John W. “Jack” Tyler, Sr. and Mary Lu (Hood) Tyler, John is survived by his wife, Paula J. Tyler of Lewisville, Texas; son, Adam W. Tyler of Huntington Beach, Calif.; sister, Nancy Grady of Birmingham, Ala.;  brothers, Bill Lewandowski of Renton, Wash., Martin Maloney of Birmingham, Ala., Bill Tyler, Tim Tyler and Rod Tyler all of Clear Lake;  and family members Don Hitzhusen of Rockford, Iowa, Connie Hitzhusen of Anamosa, Iowa, Mark, Joyce, Erin and Colin Alcorn, of Coppell, Texas,  Joseph Alcorn, Chandler, Az. and friends and musicians all over.
    John was a well known musician and song writer in North Iowa and Dallas, playing with local and internationally known artists.  John was best known for his bass and acoustic guitar as well as his rich singing voice and beautiful spirit.  John also did production and engineering for many artists and bands throughout his career.  John will always be remembered for his amazing sense of humor and loving soul.  
    John grew up in the Tyler-Ryan furniture and flooring business founded by his grandfather William P. Tyler in 1930.  He continued working in the industry until his death.
    A candlelight memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, at First United Methodist Church, 420 S. Heartz Road, Coppell, Texas in the Rotunda Chapel to celebrate his life and music.  John’s remains will be taken to Clear Lake where a private service will be held at a later date.  Local musicians played tributes to John on many stages throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area following his death.

Budley Fleming

    Budley Anne Fleming passed away Oct. 24, 2007, at home in Oxnard, Calif.
    Budley was born Oct. 20, 1945, in Louisville, Ky. to Samuel and Mamie (Tyner) Fleming. She spent her childhood growing up in Clear Lake.  She moved to California in 1968, spending the past 24 years in Ventura County.
    She leaves behind her son, David Evans, and his wife, Wendy; granddaughters, Katey and Megan; daughter, Kelle’ (Evans) Dodson, and her husband, Darryl; granddaughter, Amanda; sister, Jackie Weflen and her husband, Merle; and many family members and friends.
    Budley was an extraordinary mother, grandmother and woman.  Those who knew her will never forget her smile and grace.  She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
    A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 10, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1190 Gary Dr, Oxnard, CA 93033.

Virgil Mundt

    Virgil Richard Mundt, age 72, of Waverly, Iowa died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007 at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.
    Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly.  Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waverly where the Plainfield American Legion will give honors.  A memorial has been established in his name and online condolences can be made to WWW.kaisercorson.com.
    Virgil was born on Feb. 9, 1935 in Oelwein, Iowa, the son of William and Leona Richards Mundt.  Virgil was raised and educated in the Oelwein and Waterloo areas and entered the US Navy in 1951.   In 1955 he was honorably discharged from the Navy and returned to the Waterloo area.  On Oct. 17, 1959 Virgil was united in marriage to Julie Wendling at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Waterloo.  During his life Virgil worked for the Waterloo Fire Department, Sherwood Flower Shop in Waterloo, Black Hawk Disposal, and for John Deere as a machinist for 25 years.
    Virgil’s enjoyments included fishing, hunting, gardening, flowers, traveling, eating, handing out candy to kids on Halloween, hard work, helping others, and most of all spending time with his family.  Virgil was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly, the American Legion where he was the 3rd District Commander, a member of the forty plus eight, the Denver Country Club, and past Chief of the John Deere Fire Brigade.
    Virgil’s memory is honored by his wife, Julie, of Waverly; five children, Annie Hoffman and husband, Matt, of Waterloo, Jenay Berk and husband, Terry, of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Jim Mundt and wife, Tammy, of Parkersburg, Iowa, Rich Mundt and wife, Sherri, of Kansas City, Mo., and Michael Mundt and wife, Sheri, of Clear Lake; three brothers, Bill Mundt and wife, Shirl, of Oelwein, Iowa, Ray Mundt and wife, Kate, of Traer, Iowa, and Bert Mundt of North Carolina; two sisters, Margaret Monteith of Nevada, Iowa and Bernice Snyder and husband, Jack, of Clear Lake, and 16 grandchildren. 
    He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dale and Larry Mundt.

Evelyn “Effie” Humburg

 
    Evelyn “Effie” M. Humburg, 77, of Ventura, died Oct. 18, 2007, at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.
    Memorial services will be Saturday, Oct. 27, 2 p.m., at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, with Rev. David Gobeli officiating.  Family suggests memorials to Trumpeter Swan Restoration Program.
    Evelyn M. Humburg, better known as Effie, was born on May 2, 1930, near Frost, Minn. Effie graduated from Burt High School and continued her education at North Iowa Area Community College.  She married Donald D. Humburg on Jan. 27, 1950.  They were married for 30 years and the marriage was terminated in 1979.  In 1980, Effie purchased a home through Farmers Home Administration in Ventura and has resided there since that time.
    For several years she was an Avon representative, earning their top award of a diamond pin.  She also earned many items during contests while under their employment.  In 1970 she was hired as a secretary for the Iowa Conservation Commission (now known as Iowa Department of Natural Resources), and was selected employee of the month in 1986 after 15 years of service.  She held this position until her retirement in 1999.  In 1985 she organized the first North Iowa Ladies Ducks Unlimited Chapter and was the chairperson for three years.  Effie was presented with the Distinguished Service Award for Outstanding Contributions by Ducks Unlimited.  She also worked as hostess at the Colony Inn Restaurant from 1990 to 1996 and May 2000 until October 2001.
    Effie was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake for many years. During that time she taught Sunday school and sang in the Senior Choir.  She transferred her membership to United Methodist Church in Ventura in April 1997.
    Her many hobbies included raising roses, ceramics, knitting, quilting, cross-stitching, crocheting and remodeling her home.  She also enjoyed upholstering and refinishing furniture.
    Effie is survived by her children, Dale (Vicki) Humburg of Columbia, Mo., Thomas G. (Carmen) Humburg of Mason City, Jan L. (Jerry) Nunemaker of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Carrie (Alon) Cage, Lacy (Shawn) Priesmeyer, Jacob and Luke Humburg, Sadie, Katie, Allison and Aimee Nunemaker; great-grandchildren, Sterling Cage, Jaiden Thomsen, Dayton Cage, Brooks Priesmeyer and Landon Thomsen; sister, Ruby (Kenneth) Humburg; brother, Ron (Terry) Daniels; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by her parents, Claus and Lena (Krominga) Daniels; one brother, Donald I. Daniels; one sister, LaVonne Eliasen and her husband, George.
