Inez M. Hubbard
Inez M. Hubbard, 90, Mason City, Iowa died
Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason
City.
A funeral mass was held Friday, Feb. 25, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church,
Mason City, with the Rev. Michael J. Podhajsky officiating. Burial was in the
Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.
The family of Inez M. Hubbard has requested that memorial contributions be made
to the music department at the Newman Catholic High School in her memory.
Inez M. Hubbard was born on Sept. 20, 1914, in Missouri, the daughter of Henry
and Gladys (Spath) Klocke. She graduated from Sioux Falls, S.D. High School. She
was united in marriage to Robert Hubbard on Oct. 7, 1939, at the St. Joseph
Catholic Church in Mason City. He preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 1999. Inez
was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and
great-great-grandmother, and also worked as a seamstress for The Side Door in
Mason City.
She enjoyed sewing, gardening, and cooking, but her great love and enjoyment was
her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren
She was a long standing member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Bob Hubbard and his wife, Ria, of
Mason City, and Karen Werle of Mason City; four grandchildren, Julie Udelhofen
and her husband, Jim, Lisa Easley and her husband, Dan, Kris Wolf and her
husband, Jim, and Andy Hubbard and his wife, Cheryl, all of Mason City; 10
great-grandchildren, Amy Helgeland and her husband, Jess, Maggie and Rocky
Moyer, Lucas, Emily and Nicholas Udelhofen, Serena and Blake Easley, and Amara
and Jacob Wolf; three great-great-grandchildren, Makenna Anderson and Noah and
Abigayle Helgeland; a brother, Gene Sherman and his wife, Betty, of Clear Lake;
two brothers-in-law, Duane Jewell of Mason City, and Andrew Hubbard and his
wife, Rose, of Chicago, Ill.; several nieces and nephews as well as other
relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her parents and two sisters,
Alta Bourrie and JoAnn Jewell.

Robert Callanan
Robert Callanan, 84, 401 W. 10th Ave N., Clear
Lake, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2005 at Muse-Norris Hospice of North Iowa, Mason
City, Iowa. A funeral service was held Friday, Feb. 25, at Zion Lutheran Church,
Clear Lake with the Rev. Derik Yarian officiating. Interment was held at the
Clear Lake Cemetery. Military Rites were provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W.
Memorials may be given to the Robert Callanan Memorial Fund for the family to
give to Hospice of North Iowa, Zion Lutheran Church, The V.F.W. and the Boy
Scouts Troop # 75.
Bob was born Oct. 29, 1920 in Ventura, Iowa, the son of Everett L. and Florence
A. (Avise) Callanan. He attended schools in Ventura and Clear Lake, graduating
from Clear Lake High School in 1938 and Hamilton Business College in 1939. Bob
married Evelyn M. Kittleson Oct. 27, 1940 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason
City. He started working for Interstate Power before entering the Army. Bob
enlisted in the U.S. Army on Aug. 13, 1943 and was Honorably Discharged in
1946. He served in WWII. Following the service Bob came back to Clear Lake and
went back to work for Interstate Power. He retired in 1982 after working for
them for 43 years. Bob was active in the Gas and Electric Credit Union for over
30 years and also was league director for three years. He was involved with the
Boy Scouts for 38 years and was honored with the District Merit's highest award
and also the Silver Beaver Council Award. Bob was inducted into the Hall of Fame
of Hamilton Business College.
Bob enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, watching
sports on T.V., camping and fishing. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church,
Clear Lake, the Masonic Benevolence Lodge No. 145AF&AM, Mason City and the
Clear Lake V.F.W.
Bob is survived by his wife, Evelyn Callanan, Clear Lake; daughter, Patricia
Knutson and her husband, Dr. Eric, Corvallis, Or.; two sons, Dennis Callanan and
his wife, Vivian, Park Ridge, Ill. and Dr. David Callanan and his wife, Kim,
Arlington, Texas; three grandchildren, Kelly Wade, Fresno, Calif., Jay Bergmann
and his wife, Christina, Corvallis, and Patrick Callanan, Arlington; one
great-grandson, Sean Bergmann; and one sister, Leona Currier, Ventura.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Raymond.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

Arthur H. Hoeft
Arthur H. Hoeft, 98, of Garner, Iowa died
Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City,
Iowa.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, east of Garner
with the Rev. Carl Hedberg officiating. Music was provided by organist, Louise
Boehnke, who accompanied congregational hymns. Ushers were Glenn Thada, Gene
Toppin and Harold Pueggel. Honorary bearers were Clarke Pollock, Dan O'Keefe,
Harold Hall, Victor Knudtson, Henry Bokelman and Lawrence Miller. Pall bearers
were Tim Hossler, the Rev. Glenn Niemann, John Bokelman, Kevin Schultz, Rahn
Brager and Donald Knudtson. Burial was in the church cemetery. Cataldo Funeral
Home in Garner was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church, Hospice of North Iowa
or the Ventura Senior Citizens.
Arthur Herman Hoeft, the son of Herman and Martha (Reinhardt) Hoeft, was born
Feb. 8, 1907 at Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's
Lutheran Church east of Garner. He attended St. John's Parochial School.
Following his schooling he worked for various farmers in the Garner and Ventura
area. On Feb. 27, 1934 he married Verona Anne Schultz at her parent's home near
Forest City, Iowa. They farmed in the Ventura, Garner and Clear Lake area. In
1957, they purchased their own farm and in 1966 moved to the home farm. After
Verona passed away in 1986 he continued to live on the farm. In 1995, he moved
to Prairie View Apartments in Garner. Art and Verona were active in community
card clubs and fund raising for the local community chest drive.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he was a deacon, Walther
League and the Ventura Senior Citizens.
He is survived by two children, Darwin (Jerrilee) Hoeft of Custer, S.D. and
Carolyn (Larry) Shadle of Carthage, Mo.; grandchildren, Ann (Tim) Hossler of
Beverly Hills, Mich., and Laura (the Rev. Glenn) Niemann of Pekin, Ill.;
step-grandchildren, Patty (Marty) Allen of Gresham, Or., Jerrilee (Paul) Sever
of Salmon, Idaho, Renee (Tom) Dickson of Post Falls, Idaho, Dave (Jenny) Squire
of Houlton, Wis. and Bob (Kathy) Squire of Peru, N.Y.; three
great-granddaughters; eight step-great-granddaughters; a step-great-grandson;
two sisters-in-law, Irma (Henry) Bokelman of Ventura and Lucille Schultz of
Mason City and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Verona, on Mar. 23, 1986; his parents; a
brother, Lester Hoeft; a sister, Edna Knopf; and a step-great-grandson, Mark
Sever.

Kelmer "Kelly"
Sorenson
Kelmer "Kelly" Sorenson, 96, of rural Hanlontown,
Iowa died Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at Muse-Norris Hospice of North Iowa, Mason
City, Iowa. Funeral services were held Friday, March 4, at Grace Lutheran
Church in Hanlontown with the Rev. Linda Johnson-Prestholt and the Rev. Kris
Snyder officiating. Interment will be in Brush Point Cemetery in rural
Hanlontown. Memorials may be given to the Citizens Savings Bank Museum,
Hanlontown.
Kelly was born Aug. 3, 1908 at the family home in rural Hanlontown, the son of
Austin and Alice (Brattrud) Sorenson. He lived his entire life in the house in
which he was born. He married Evelyn Gooden on Aug. 14, 1937 in Kensett, Iowa.
Kelly farmed his entire life. He enjoyed fixing up old machinery and sharing
stories from his past. He was baptized, confirmed and remained a life-long
member of Grace Lutheran Church.
Kelmer is survived by his children, Deloris Downs and husband, Dan, of Lake
Havasu City, Az., Lynn Sorenson and his wife, Cindy, of rural Hanlontown; five
grandchildren, Stacey Lunsford and her husband, Victor, of Whitewater, Wis.,
Joel Lemmerman and his wife, Leah, of North Branch, Minn., Jamie Sorenson and
his wife, Angie, of Hanlontown, Michelle Gobrecht and her husband, Duane, of St.
Paul Park, Minn., Christina Sorenson of Decorah, Iowa and nine
great-grandchildren.
Kelmer was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, in 2001; his parents; two
brothers; two sisters and one adopted sister.

Carl Joseph Mealy
Carl Joseph Mealy of Mason City, Iowa died on
Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at Muse Norris Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral Services were held Saturday, March 5, at Holy Family Church in Mason
City with burial at Elmwood Cemetery. Military honors were by the Mason City
Veterans Memorial Association.
Carl Joseph Mealy was born in Elma, Iowa on June 10, 1925, the son of Robert
Aldon and Terrance Marie (Cannon) Mealy. Carl's early years were spent in
Elma. His family moved to Mason City where he graduated from Holy Family High
School in 1943. From 1943 to 1945, Carl served in U.S. Army in active duty with
the infantry in Italy then as a clerk at the prisoner of war camp in Greeley,
Colorado. During his service to his country, he was awarded several medals,
including the Bronze Star.
Following the service, he attended the University of Northern Iowa. In 1949, he
graduated with a BA in business and physical education. Carl was a teacher and a
coach in Lehigh, Iowa from 1949 - 1950.
On June 5, 1950, Carl married Alice Norton at St Mary's Catholic Church in
Wilton, Iowa.
The couple found teaching jobs together in Elwood, Iowa where Carl was a
principal, teacher and a coach until 1953. During the summers, Carl attended
Colorado State College of Education in Greeley, Colorado graduating with a MA in
education administration in 1953.
Carl took a position in Nichols, Iowa as the Superintendent of Schools from 1953
to 1958. In 1958, he became the principal of the high school at Horicon, Wis.
The family moved to Mason City in 1967, where Carl served as an administrator in
the Mason City Schools until his retirement in 1985. Carl served as principal at
Harding, Garfield, Washington and Roosevelt Elementary Schools.
While in Nichols, Carl joined the Army Reserve service, ending his 30 year
military career attached to a Civil Affairs unit in Green Bay, Wis. In
addition, from 1972 to 1978, he was selected to serve as a liaison officer for
the West Point Academy. Carl retired from the Army as LT Colonel.
In 1973 Carl and Alice opened up C&A Hobby Shop
in Mason City. It drew customers from hundreds of miles around. Carl kept the
store open at the same location on 4th Avenue for 30 years until Carl's health
forced its closure in 2003. The hobby shop was a labor of love for Carl. He
had a passion for airplanes, model building and flying. Just as in education,
Carl took immense satisfaction in helping others, especially kids, and watching
them grow.
Carl is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Alice (Norton) Mealy; two
sons, Carl and wife, Cynthia, of Normandy Park, Wash. and Robert Mealy of
Madison, Wis.; three daughters, Cindy Mealy and husband, Bob Steinberg of
Verona, Wis., Cathy Shea and husband, Kevin, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Alice Ann
Janechek and husband, Lon, of Independence, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, Katie,
Nicholas, Mathew, Amanda, Benjamin, Megan, Teresa, Lisa, Timothy, Michael,
Brian, and Tedrick. Carl is also survived by his brothers, William Mealy of
Mason City, Terrance Mealy and wife, Loretta, of Muscatine, Iowa; sister-in-law,
Dorothy "Dottie" Mealy of Madison, Wis. and many nieces, nephews and
great-nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his extended family and
friends.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, John Jerome "Jerry"
Mealy; one nephew, Michael Mealy.
Throughout his life Carl enjoyed meeting and working with people. He
participated in and supported youth and civic organizations. He challenged
himself to make things better. He encouraged youth to pursue hobbies and
careers. Through the military, education and the hobby shop, Carl has touched
thousands along his life's journey.
Donations celebrating Carl's life can be made to Holy Family Church or Hospice
of North Iowa, both located in Mason City.

Eva M. Kimble
Eva M. Kimble, 102, of Mason City, Iowa died
Friday, March 4, 2005 at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City. Funeral services were
held Tuesday, March 8, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, Clear Lake
with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Family suggests memorials to the I.O.O.F.
Home.
Eva was born April 2, 1902 in Jeffers, Minn. the daughter of Royal and Ida
(Whiteman) Miller. She moved with her family to Clear Lake as a child and
lived on the family farm south of Clear Lake for 26 years. She attended school
in Clear Lake.
Eva married George Glen Kimble July 3, 1930 in Clear Lake. They moved to Mason
City in 1944.
She enjoyed baby sitting many children in Mason City, including her own nieces
and nephews and spending time with her family. She loved to travel, garden,
raise flowers and play the piano.
Eva was a member of Clear Lake United Methodist Church, North Iowa Rock Club and
Life member of Moose Lodge, Mason City.
She is survived by her brother-in-law, Charles "Buster" Lowe, and sister-in-law,
Irene Miller, both of Clear Lake; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews
and great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was the last of the nine siblings of Royal and Ida Miller. She was preceded
in death by her parents; husband, George; five brothers, Earl, Burrel, Lloyd,
Orin and LeRoy Miller and three sisters, Elsie Bussa, Myrtle Lowe and Addie
Hanley.

Honeycutt
Shirley I. Honeycutt, 60, of 1012 7th Ave. N.,
Clear Lake, died Sunday, March 6, 2005 at her home. A prayer service will be
held Thursday, 7 p.m., March 10, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear
Lake with the Rev. Miles Grismore officiating. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m.
on Thursday. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m. at the First
Baptist Church, Petersburg, Ill. Visitation will be Friday from 6 - 8 p.m. at
the Mott-Henning Funeral Home, Athens, Ill. Interment will be in Lebanon
Cemetery, Petersburg. Family suggests memorials to Shirley I. Honeycutt
Memorial Fund.
Shirley was born April 24, 1944 in Springfield, Ill. the daughter of Hubert
Wiley and Martha (Derry) Van Eman. She trusted Christ as a young girl and was
active in her church in her younger years. She graduated from Greenview High
School, Greenview, Ill. and from Hannibal-LaGrange Jr. College, Hannibal, Mo.
Shirley married Joe Honeycutt Oct. 17, 1965 in Petersburg. She later attended
Baptist Bible College and Southwest Missouri State, Springfield. She worked
with the handicap at SPARC in Springfield. They moved to Clear Lake in February
of 1999.
Shirley was a devoted wife and was a very caring person. She enjoyed listening
to Christian music, especially George Beverly Shea. She was a member of Faith
Baptist Church, Mason City, Iowa.
She is survived by her husband, Joe Honeycutt, Clear Lake; son, Shannon
Honeycutt, Minneapolis, Minn.; two grandchildren, Braden and Grace Honeycutt;
two brothers, Dale Van Eman and his wife, Ann, Athens, Ill. and Dan Van Eman and
his wife, Rosalyn, Sherman, Ill.; a sister, Bonnie Heyen and her husband,
Larry, Petersburg, and daughter-in-law, Shari Honeycutt, Lino Lakes, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Shane Honeycutt.

Ann "Bobbie" Hanneman
Roberta Ann "Bobbie" Hanneman, age 55, of Ocean
View, Del. died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005 at the Beebe Medical Center in Lewes,
Del. Bobbie was born in Mason City, Iowa. She was a Sales Coordinator for
ResortQuest Realty of Bethany Beach, Del. and a member of Mariner's Bethel
United Methodist Cemetery in Ocean View, Del.
A funeral service was held on Saturday, Feb. 26, at Mariner's Bethel United
Methodist Church in Ocean View. Interment service will be held at Arlington
National Cemetery at a later date.
She is survived by her parents, Silas and Laurleen Fatland of Clear Lake; two
sons, Scott R. And his wife, Darcie, of Honolulu, Hawaii, Jason and his wife,
DayLynn, of Casa Grande, Az.; a sister, Judy Gartamaker of Minneapolis, Minn.;
four grandchildren, Colin, Emily, Kenzie, and Kaydence; two step- grandchildren,
Tyler and Cody, and her in-laws, Martin and Kate Hanneman of Madison, S.D.
Bobbie was preceded in death by her husband Robert in October 2004.

Margie A. Feuring
Margie A. Feuring, 77, of Clear Lake, formerly
of Marble Rock, Iowa passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at the Oakwood Care
Center in Clear Lake.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 12, at First United Methodist Church,
Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Don Preston officiating. Internment will be in the
Northlawn Memory Gardens, Iowa Falls.
Margie Arlene (Thayer) Feuring was born Sept. 4, 1927, in Owasa, Iowa, the
daughter of Harry and Edna (Lamb) Thayer. She graduated from Owasa High School
in 1945. After graduating from high school she worked at Newberry's Five and
Dime and Sanitary Dairy in Iowa Falls.
Margie married Rudolph "Rudy" Feuring on April 24, 1946 in Owasa. They started
their lives together in southern Iowa. In 1950, they moved to the Hampton-Iowa
Falls area, where they farmed with Rudy's brother. Because of the closeness of
these two families, Margie became a very special aunt to her four nieces, Jan,
Linda, Jeannie, and Kathy. In later years, Margie and Rudy lived in Marble Rock.
After Rudy passed away in 1978, Margie moved to Clear Lake in 1989 to be closer
to her children. In 1992, Margie became a resident of Oakwood Care Center, Clear
Lake.
Margie loved to garden and spend time with her family. She was a long time
member of the Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school and held various
positions in the WSCS of the Methodist church. She was a 4-H leader for three
years while living in Marble Rock.
Margie is survived by nine children, Sharon (John) Fank, Garner, Iowa, Sandra
(Danny) Chappell, Arlington, Texas, Randy (Kym) Feuring, Austin, Minn., Dean
Feuring, Floyd, Iowa, Rick (Nancy) Feuring, Garner, Kevin (Michelle) Feuring,
Burt, Iowa, Karla Ginapp, Clear Lake, Steve (Heidi) Feuring, Mason City, Iowa
and Craig Feuring, Crystal Lake, Iowa; 20 grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren. Margie is also survived by her three brothers, Loyd
(Jackie) Thayer, Eldora, Iowa, Roy (Edna) Thayer, Texarkana, Ark. and Lyle
(Fern) Thayer, LeGrand, Iowa; one sister, Mary Ann (Wade) Baago, Clear Lake; two
special cousins, Hazel Freeman, Iowa Falls and Opal Freeman, Mason City; two
brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law, Carl (Vi) Couch, Des Moines, Iowa and
Elmer Feuring, Winterset, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.
Margie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Rudy; one infant
daughter, Susan; and several other family members.

Bob Grabinski
Bob Grabinski, of Clear Lake, passed from this
world on Wednesday, March 9, 2005 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit,
Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 12, at Clear Lake United Methodist
Church with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Military honors will be given by
the Clear Lake V.F.W. Interment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason
City.
Robert Virgil Grabinski was born Dec. 11, 1919 in Faulkton, S.D., the first
child of Frank and Elva (Penticoff) Grabinski. The family moved to Grundy
Center, Iowa, where Bob graduated from high school in 1937.
He attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa for one year before
leaving to enter the workforce. Like many of his generation, Bob answered the
call to arms as our country entered World War II. He was a member of the Army
Air Corp from 1942 to 1946, serving in England.
He married Katheryn "Kay" Keoppel on Jan. 20, 1946 in Marshalltown, Iowa. The
couple began their life together in Grundy Center. Bob served as Grundy County
Auditor from 1948-1952. He returned to private life with Farmers Savings Bank
until the family moved to Charles City, Iowa in 1960.
While in Charles City from 1960-1963, he worked for First Security Bank and
Trust Company. Bob and his family put down roots in Clear Lake in 1963, where
he and Kay's three sons and a daughter graduated from high school. He joined
the Clear Lake Bank and Trust Company and worked there until his retirement in
1984. He remained in Clear Lake and in 1992 he moved to the Good Shepherd
Health Center in Mason City.
Bob was active in the community, belonging to the Clear Lake Noon Lions Club and
working on the American Heart Association's annual campaigns. He was a member
of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church. He was also an active athlete,
playing AAU basketball, fast-pitch softball and rec. league volleyball. He
enjoyed golfing for many years.
Bob is survived by two brothers, Eldon Grabinski of Escondido, Calif., and Dale
(Sally) Grabinski of West Des Moines, Iowa; a sister, Marilyn (Don) Gonnerman of
Waterloo, Iowa; two sons, Douglas (Marcia) Grabinski of Clear Lake, and Kenyon
(Patty) Grabinski of Iowa City, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Patti, (widow of Steve)
Grabinski of Clear Lake; two daughters, Julia (Tony) DiPaolo of Winnetka, Calif.
and Lyn (Harry) Gierke of Berkheim, Germany.
He is also survived by 13 grandchildren: Brent Grabinski, Elissa (Doyce) Hanson,
Jeffrey Grabinski; Zachary Grabinski, Whitney Grabinski, Stephanie Grabinski;
Jodi Grabinski, Lani Grabinski; Jeremy DiPaolo, Danielle DiPaolo, Joshua DiPaolo;
Lucia Wilde, James Wilde and three great-grandchildren: Taylor, Isaac and
Abigail Hanson.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Katheryn; parents, Frank and Elva
Grabinski; a brother, Willis Grabinski; and a son Stephen, "Steve" Grabinski.

Marian Irene
Morisky
Marian Irene Morisky, 88, of Clear Lake, passed
away peacefully in the early morning hours of Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at Hospice
of North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa. A memorial service will be held at the United
Methodist Church in Clear Lake at 2 p.m. on March 19, with Pastor Jan Burnett
presiding over the service. The Ward-Van Slyke Funeral Home will assist with the
church memorial, but there will be no visitation before the memorial service.
Marian was interred at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City, alongside her
husband. Memorials will be presented to Hospice of North Iowa, The USO, and
Meals on Wheels.
Marian was born in Marble Rock, Iowa on Jan. 29, 1916, to Harry and Forest (Losee)
Ackley, who also were born and grew up there. Marian graduated from high school
in Marble Rock and furthered her education by attending Iowa State Teachers
College (UNI) in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she graduated with a teaching
certificate. After college she taught in Randalia, St. Ansgar, Clear Lake,
Ottumwa, and Mason City, Iowa. It was while teaching in Clear Lake that she met
and eventually married William L. (Bill) Morisky in Mason City, Iowa, on Nov.
7, 1943. Marian and Bill had two sons, Bill J. and Mark. In 1969, Marian was
hired as the executive director to help organize the "Charlie Brown Community
Day Care," a new community childcare center located in the 1st Christian Church
in Mason City. She worked there for 11 years until retiring to enjoy her many
interests, including attending plays, concerts and sporting events, and
traveling at home and abroad with friends. Marian loved music, was an
accomplished pianist, and was proud of her two sons' music careers. Marian also
loved to bird watch, play cards (especially bridge), read, cook, entertain
friends, spend time on Clear Lake watching the beautiful sunsets, and dote on
her granddaughter, Kendra. She also enjoyed the business world and was active in
managing her family's Century Farm outside of Marble Rock.
Marian became an active member of P.E.O. while in college and strongly supported
this organization because she felt this was a wonderful way to become better
acquainted with her sisters. In 2004, Marian received recognition for 50 years
as a P.E.O. member. Locally she was a Chapter EA sister. She was also active as
a hospice volunteer, belonged to TTT, book clubs, church groups, Progress Club,
and volunteered her time to others whenever there was a need. Through these
associations Marian had many wonderful, endearing, and fulfilling friendships
that lasted throughout her life.
Marian was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, in 1972; her brother, Warren,
in 1989; Peggy, Warren's wife who was like a sister to Marian, and Marian's
mother, Forest, in 1974.
Survivors include her son, Bill, his wife, Deborah, and granddaughter, Kendra,
of Prescott, Az., and son, Mark, of Omaha, Neb.

Jerry Ray Harris
Jerry Ray Harris, 62, of Ames, Iowa died March
12, 2005 at Mary Greeley Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 16 at Stevens Memorial
Chapel in Ames. Burial will be in the Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Jerry was born June 27, 1942 Mason City, Iowa to Floyd Ray Harris and Betty Gene
Lee.
Jerry worked for 3M for the last 20 years, and for the House of Vision for 20
years. He enjoyed fishing and spending time out doors. Jerry also had interest
in the computer.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Carol; children, Eric, Renee (Randy),
and Ryan; grandchildren Ashley, Nicholas, Jonathan, Bobby, and Ceara, other
relatives and friends
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Bob Klongerbo
Bob Klongerbo, 52, of Duluth, Minn., died
Sunday, March 20, 2005 in Duluth.
A funeral service for Robert Klongerbo will be held on Thursday, March 24, at 11
a.m., at First Lutheran Church in Hayward, Wis. A gathering of family and
friends will take place at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the
service. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Hayward.
Robert John Klongerbo was born on July 18, 1952 in Estherville, Iowa, the son of
Merle and Mary Lou (Krans) Klongerbo. Bob was a registered nurse and worked for
many years in the surgical department of St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
While working there, he met many famous people, such as Johnny Cash and Lady
Bird Johnson, who had come to Mayo Clinic for treatment. He participated in
Frisbee competitions and was a charter member of the Professional Disc Golf
Association. Bob was known for his spontaneous humor as well as his compassion.
His theory was to live for the moment but stop long enough to appreciate the
things around you. He enjoyed biking and biked across Wisconsin several times.
He played the harmonica and enjoyed Blues music, photography, camping and
hiking.
Bob is survived by one son, Luke Klongerbo, Menagha, Minn.; two daughters, Anne
and Sara Klongerbo, both of Hayward, Wis.; his mother, Mary Lou Klongerbo,
Rochester; one brother, Ross (Teri) Klongerbo, Winter Park, Fla.; two sisters,
Karen (Mike) Margitan and Janet Hensley, both of Rochester; special friends,
Bernice and Jean and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father, Merle; and his former father and
mother-in-law, Glenn and Esther Erickson.

"Marny" V. Minette
Marnis "Marny" V. Minette, 92, of Clear Lake,
died Wednesday March 16, 2005, at the I.O.O.F. Care Center in Mason City. A
funeral mass was held Monday, March 21, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1001
9th Ave S., Clear Lake. Interment was at the Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials
may be directed to Opportunity Village or the charity of the donor's choice.
Marny was born March 19, 1912, in Washta, Iowa, the only child of Henry and
Bertha (Conley) Hatch. She graduated from Washta High School in 1930 and
attended Sioux City Commercial College before moving to Clear Lake in 1932.
Marnis married Vincent N. Minette on November 4, 1937 at St. Patrick's Catholic
Church in Clear Lake. They lived in Clear Lake and Fort Dodge before and during
the early years of World War II. During Vincent's service in the Navy, she and
son, Michael, lived in Clear Lake. After the war they moved to Omaha, Nebraska
before returning to Clear Lake in 1948.
She worked with her husband at Witke's Restaurant, helped start and run Witke's
Gifts in the early 1950's until their retirement in 1971. She and her husband
enjoyed traveling and entertaining until his death in 1984. She was active in
the local TTT Chapter and volunteered at Mercy Hospital in Mason City. She was
an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
She is survived by two sons, Michael D. Minette of Clear Lake and Richard P.
Minette and his wife, Kathleen, of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, John Minette
of The Colony, Texas, Mary Minette of Portland, Oregon, Vincent (Ted) Minette
and his wife, Kelly, of Liberty, Missouri, Jennifer Fore and her husband, Chris,
of Concord, New Hampshire, Aimee Kern and her husband, Andy, of Clear Lake; and
Michael J. Minette of Chicago, Ill. Also surviving are eight
great-grandchildren, Carson Kern, Spencer Fore, Madeline Fore, Rosemary Fore,
Samuel Minette, Sarah Minette, Maxwell Minette and Katherine Minette.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1984, and an infant
granddaughter, Nancy Louise Minette.

Esther L. Sams, 97, Clear Lake, died Saturday, March 19, 2005 at the Oakwood
Care Center. A Funeral service will be held today, Wednesday, March 23, at 2
p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, with Rev. Dean Hess
officiating. Graveside services will be Thursday, March 24, at 2 p.m. at
Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa, with her grandson Rev. David Sams
officiating.
Memorials may be given to the Esther L. Sams Memorial Fund.
Esther was born March 3, 1908 in rural Merrill, Iowa, the daughter of Proctor
and Ella (Wettstedt) Harris. She attended schools in Merrill. Esther married
Harold O. Sams on Oct. 8, 1924 in Sioux Falls, S.D. They lived on the family
farm with his parents until moving to Sioux City, Iowa.
Esther worked at Younkers for 40 years in Sioux City. She was the manager and
buyer of the "Foundations Dept". She took great pride in her work and was
highly respected. She was an excellent cook and loved baking. She did a lot of
crossword puzzles, read romance novels, loved flowers and gardening, and had a
great sense of humor. Esther moved to Clear Lake in the late 1990's to be
closer to her daughter. While in Clear Lake, she followed her grandchildren's
sporting activities, going to most of their events. She loved traveling and
rode her exercise bike five miles a day.
Esther was a long time member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, Sioux
City. She was a member of the Azure Chapter of the Eastern Star, Sioux City.
Esther is survived by her daughter, Barbara Dwyer and her husband, Jerry, Clear
Lake; son, Richard R. Sams and his wife, Judy, Sioux City; daughter-in-law,
Marilyn Sams, Redwood Falls, Minn.; ten grandchildren, Stephen Sams and his
wife, Andrea, Rev. David Sams, Keith Sams and his wife, Janice, Brian Sams and
his wife, Darla, Kim Dwyer and his wife, Sue, Kirk Dwyer, Dawn Southwick and her
husband, Douglas, Debra Illian and her husband, Mark, Susie Avery and her
husband, Kevin and Luke Sams; eighteen great-grandchildren, Erik Sams and his
fiancée, Sarah Hampton, Melissa Sams, Shawn Sams and his wife, Ginny, Jillian
Lee Sams, Cody Lee Sams, Andrew Dwyer, Alex Dwyer, Michael Dwyer and special
friend, Shelby Gallagher, Scott Dwyer, Cory Dwyer, Matthew Dwyer, Danielle

Agnes I. Gruis
Agnes I. Gruis, 88, of Clear Lake, died Saturday, March 19, 2005 at Hospice of
North Iowa in Mason City. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 22, at
the Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, Thornton, Iowa, with Rev. Jan Burnett, Clear Lake
Methodist Church and Rev. Rodney Meester, Meservey First Reformed Church,
officiating. Burial followed at the Meservey Cemetery.
Agnes Irene Gruis was born July 24, 1916, in Williams, Iowa, to Charles Allen
and Clara Belle (Dubson) Bowman. She graduated from Meservey High School in
1932. Agnes was married to Louis Daniel Gruis on Feb. 20,1935, in Belmond,
Wright County, Iowa, and they farmed in the Meservey-Thornton area.
Agnes was active in the Meservey Reformed Church; having been a Sunday School
teacher and held various offices in the Reformed Church Women. After her
husband's death in 1964, she moved to Clear Lake where she has since resided.
During her years in Clear Lake, she did office work and retired from H&H Food
Service in 1981. She then volunteered at Opportunity Village store for seven
years, at the Clear Lake Public Library for 13 years and also at numerous other
places with RSVP. Doing things for others brought her much enjoyment. She also
held offices in several clubs, as well as in United Methodist Women. She was an
avid reader and also enjoyed gardening and cooking.
Survivors include: her son, Lawrence and his wife, Phyllis, Thornton; two
grandchildren, Sonia Schaeffer and her husband, Darrell, Mason City and Todd
Gruis and his wife, Jane, Clear Lake; eight great-grandchildren, Elizabeth
Whittington of Norwalk,Iowa, Darren Page and his wife, Amy, of Hill Air Force
Base, Utah, Alyssa Clausen and her husband, Jay, of Mason City, Holly Page of
Des Moines, Iowa, Amanda Jurgens of Nora Springs, Iowa, Michael and Thomas Gruis
of Clear Lake and Austin Schaeffer of Mason City; and one great,
great-granddaughter, Isabella Whittington of Norwalk.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a grandson, Brad, in 1981; her
parents; five brothers and five sisters.

Evelyn F. Stites, 85, Clear Lake, died Tuesday,
March 15, 2005 at Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake. A funeral service was held
Friday, March 18, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with Lay Assistant
Richard Scott officiating. Interment was held at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Evelyn was born Feb. 8, 1920 in Rural Klemme, Iowa, the daughter of Lee and
Mollie (Heginger) Price. She attended school in Klemme and Clear Lake. Evelyn
married Kenneth Stites on March 7, 1938 in Davenport, Iowa and then moved to
Clear Lake.
Evelyn loved flower gardening, spending time at the summer cabin in Richville,
Minn. and shopping. She was a lifetime and active member of the VFW Post
Auxiliary in Clear Lake.
Evelyn is survived by two daughters, Karen Smith and her husband, Ron, Belmond,
Iowa and Jodie Huff and her husband, Mike, Algona, Iowa; a brother, Bud Price,
Mason City; a sister, Leona Torkelson, Mason City; seven grandchildren and one
great-granddaughter.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, K.C. Stites; her parents; a
daughter, Lois Draeger; and a brother, Bill Price.

Richard Hanner
Richard Hanner, a long time resident of
Hanlontown, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at his home at the age of
89 years. Richard was born March 27, 1915 in David City, Butler County,
Nebraska.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, March 21, 2005, at the Ward-Van
Slyke, Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th Street, Clear Lake. Rev. Dennis Ganz
officiated. Interment was at Brush Point Cemetery, Rural Hanlontown, Iowa.
The original Hanner families came from Mutterstadt, Germany to America on a
sailing vessel in 1840. Some of the family moved from Ohio to Illinois and then
to Nebraska.
The original name was Hörner which changed several times and finally became
Hanner.
Richard's parents were Renwix Lee and Winifred Elsie Hanner and there were five
children born, four daughters and one son (Richard). His parents and three
siblings preceded him in death. He has one sister surviving, Alice Moeller.
Richard never married, but is survived by a niece and nephew, seven great-nieces
and nephews and 13 great-great nieces and nephews.

Rose McAleer Peters
Allison Rose McAleer Peters, 19, of 307 Lakeview
Drive, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at her home of natural causes.
Funeral services were Monday, March 21, 2005, at First Presbyterian Church, 201
Willowbrook Drive, with Rev. Terry Hamilton-Poore, officiating. Burial was in
Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
Memorials may be given to Francis Lauer Youth Services, Mason City.
Allison Rose McAleer Peters came into our lives on Feb. 17, 1986. She was born
at Mercy Hospital in Mason City where she lived her entire life.
Allison received her education in the Mason City Public Schools system. She was
very actively involved throughout her education experience. In her younger years
she attended Hoover Elementary. She loved participating even at a young age.
Allison began playing the violin and piano. In sports, she was involved in
figure skating, softball and swim club. In addition, her love for dance began as
she both danced and acted in many productions by "The Studio for the Performing
Arts."
As Allison entered Roosevelt Middle School, she added volleyball and track to
her many activities.
Allison began Mason City High School and loved being a "Mohawk." She continued
her involvement in both athletics and academics. She competed in volleyball and
tennis lettering both her junior and senior years.
A great source of pride for Allison centered on her involvement with the Mohawk
"Danzers". It was truly one of her greatest thrills to have the honor and
privilege of dancing with an outstanding group of young women who brought home
the school's first ever state championship her senior year.
In addition, Allison was very involved in her academics. She was on the A honor
roll every semester of high school. Other recognitions included being on the
CIML All Academic team throughout her high school career. She was also
recognized by being on the National Honor Society her junior and senior years.
Allison loved many activities while in high school. These included being the
sports editor, a member of the Student Senate and on the committee for the Mason
City Youth Task Force. She served on various community service projects. She was
also chosen "Sunrise Rotary Student of the Month". Allison played the violin for
10 years, was a member of the MCHS Orchestra and was voted president of the
orchestra her senior year.
After graduating with the class of 2004, Allison proudly became an Iowa
"Hawkeye," attending the University of Iowa. She was pursuing a career in
International Business and Spanish. In her only semester, she made the Dean's
List.
Allison will be deeply missed by her many friends made throughout her short
life. She was a dear and precious daughter, a beloved sister, and a great friend
to all who knew her.
She is survived by her parents, Jean McAleer and David Peters, Mason City; a
brother, Andrew Peters, Mason City; paternal grandmother, Joan Peters, Webster
City; aunts, Jeannie (Steve) Vande Zande, Webster City; Mary (Pete) Frost,
Marshalltown; Barbara McAleer, Hermosa Beach, CA; Beth (Dean) Hosch, Tega Cay,
S.C.; uncles, Ron (Diane) Peters, Des Moines; Patrick (Linda) McAleer, Burnet,
TX; Timothy McAleer, Lomita, CA, and many cousins.
Her paternal grandfather, Ronald Peters; maternal grandparents, Guneld and

Ervin Walter Kahl
Ervin Walter Kahl, 91, of Spirit Lake, Iowa,
formerly of Britt, Iowa, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2005, after a brief
stay in the Hospice unit in the Dickinson County Regional Hospital located in
Spirit Lake. He was surrounded by his family.
Ervin Kahl was currently living in Spirit Lake. He was a long time resident of
Britt, Iowa, and later Clear Lake, Iowa and Minnetonka, Minn. Ervin was born on
February 27, 1914, in Malta, Illinois. He later moved to Mason City and in 1931,
moved to Britt with his brother, Neil, and his parents, Walter and Nellie Kahl.
He attended school in Mason City, graduated from Britt High School in 1932, and
attended the University of Iowa. In 1938, Ervin married Elizabeth (Betty) Nix
from Britt. Together they farmed in the Britt community for over 50 years and
were members of First Lutheran Church in Britt and Galilean Lutheran Church in
Clear Lake.
Ervin enjoyed contributing to his community. He served as the Rural School
Director for Erin Township #2 and as president and board member of the Britt
Public Schools. He also served on the board of the Britt Co-op, Britt Creamery,
the Hancock County Care Center, the Britt Country Club and Golf Course, and
served as a director of the 1st State Bank in Britt for 19 years. Ervin was also
president and treasurer of the Hancock/Winnebago County Arc Association for
People With Disabilities for 22 years. He also served as president of the
Hancock County Farm Bureau. After moving to Clear Lake, he became a member and
officer of the Ventura Lions Club.
Ervin enjoyed piloting his single engine plane in his early years, then fishing
and then golf and more golf.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) and daughters: Karmon Amsler and
husband, John, from Sioux City, Iowa, and Mona Jean Kahl from Spirit Lake, Iowa;
(a son Lon Ervin Kahl died in 1983); granddaughter, Shonda Warner, London,
England and grandson, Trenton Warner and Susan Stone; and great-granddaughter,
Ridley, El Cerrito, Calif. Also niece and nephews, Marsha Peterson and husband,
Paul, Britt, Iowa, Gary Kahl and wife, Katie, Clear Lake, Bob Kahl and wife,
Lavonne, Fla. and their families. Also sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law,
Mildred Phillips and husband, Lyle, Bella Vista, Ark., Geneva King, Evansville,
Ind., Chris Nix and wife, Dorothy, Evansville, Bill Nix, Evansville, and many
cherished nieces and nephews. Step-grandchildren, John and Mary Amsler,
Davidsonville, Maryland, Greg and Chell Amsler, Stevenson Ranch, Calif., Paige
and Dar Sampson, Libertyville, Ill., and their families.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Nellie Kahl; son, Lon Ervin

Ervin will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and treasured
friend to many.

Delano "Bud" Doebel
Marcus Delano "Bud" Doebel, 72, of Clear Lake,
died Friday, March 25, 2005, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason
City, Iowa.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 30, at the
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North 4th Street, Clear Lake, with the Rev.
Mark Doebel officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until service time
on Wednesday at the chapel.
The family of Marcus Delano "Bud" Doebel has requested that memorial
contributions be made to the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City in
his memory.
According to his wishes his body was cremated.
Bud was born on Feb. 6, 1933, the son of Arthur and Bernadette (Martin) Doebel
in Manly, Iowa. He was the younger brother to Mary (Hagen) of Manly and Monica
(Hagen) of Mason City. As the only boy and the baby, Mary and Monica say that he
was pretty spoiled, as their mother and father would tell them to just leave Bud
alone. He grew up in Manly, was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Church in
Manly and attended schools in Manly, and Grafton, Iowa. He was united in
marriage to Bonnie Cooper on June 21, 1952. To this union was born Mark, Sue,
Mike, and Dan.
Marcus was a member of the National Guard and worked at Deckers Meat Packing
Plant and Thriftway Grocery stores before he began a 37 year career as a route
salesman with the Clear Lake Bakery in 1958. He was very proud of the fact that
during these 37 years he never missed a day. (Young people take note.)
When Bud retired in 1995 he enjoyed tinkering on his and Bonnie's acreage,
mowing lawn and cutting and splitting firewood (probably about 30 years worth).
He enjoyed his pool games and pool buddies at the V.F.W. He also enjoyed
reading, and was an avid Clear Lake Lions Wrestling fan. Many a fan could pick
him out of the stands with his distinctive handle bar mustache.
Left behind to carry on his memory and legacy are his wife of 53 years, Bonnie
Doebel, of Clear Lake; his son, Mark Doebel and his wife, Marilyn, of Clear
Lake; grandson, Robert, and his wife, Kristie, along with Brennen and Braxton
from Mason City; grandson, David Doebel and his wife, Kirsten, along with
Maxwell and Colby of Alta, Iowa; granddaughter, Angie and her husband, Mike
Lester, of Emmetsburg, Iowa; grandson, Matthew, of Storm Lake, Iowa; daughter,
Sue and her husband, Kent Ellsworth, of Humboldt, Iowa along with
granddaughters, Brittany and Calli; son, Mike Doebel and his wife, Marsha, of
Clear Lake along with their son, Derek, of Ames, Iowa; son, Dan Doebel and his
wife, Kim, of Davenport, Iowa, along with their sons, Luke and Josh and
daughters, Kalynn and Elizabeth; Marcus's sisters, Monica and Mary and many

He was preceded in death by three nephews; two nieces; two brothers-in-law and

Warren M. Peitzke
Warren M. Peitzke, 88, of 114 N. 5th St., Clear
Lake, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit,
Mason City, Iowa. Funeral services were held Monday, March 28, at the United
Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Interment
was in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Military honors were by the Clear Lake V.F.W.
Memorials may given in memory of Warren to Hospice of North Iowa.
Warren was born July 20, 1916 north of Clear Lake the son of George and Mabel
(Peterson) Peitzke. He attended Lincoln Township #3 school. Warren entered
into military service in 1942 during World War II and spent most of his three
years of service in Europe.
Warren farmed north of Clear Lake and in 1973 retired after 58 years of
farming. After retiring he moved into town and worked for Woodford-Wheeler
Lumber Company for eight years. He loved to be outside, taking his daily walks
and mowing lawns. He especially enjoyed his many coffee friends.
Warren was a member of the United Methodist Church and Clear Lake I.O.O.F.
Lodge.
Warren is survived by a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his mother
and father and his sister, Muriel, in 1997.

Scott, Lay Assistant of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake officiating. Graveside
services will be held at a later time in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Family
suggests memorials to Esther L. Wilson Memorial fund.
Esther was born March 28, 1914 in Hanlontown, Iowa the daughter of Gilbert and
Emma (Bray) Erickson. She was baptized at Grace Lutheran Church, Hanlontown and
confirmed March 11, 1928. She graduated from Hanlontown High School June 23,
1931.
Esther married Clifford H. Wilson on Nov. 23, 1931 in Kewanee, Ill. They farmed
on the family farm near Hanlontown. They moved to Clear Lake, Iowa in the late
1940's. She moved to Oakwood Care Center in March of 1999, where the staff
became her extended family of which she loved very much..
She became a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake after moving to Clear
Lake and was a very active member in ladies circle, Do Days and Young at
Hearts. She enjoyed playing cards, singing, babysitting children, cooking,
baking and most of all spending time with her family. One of her favorite
sayings was "Holy Cow."
Esther is survived by her two children, Larry and Alyce Wilson and Diane and
Garry Miller, both of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Brian and Dian Wilson, Peosta,
Iowa, Jennifer and Thad DenHartog, Bettendorf, Iowa and Amy and BJ Miller, West
Des Moines, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband in 1982.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Dwight Wirtz, 49, of Mason City, Iowa died
Saturday, March 26, 2005 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason
City. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., April 9, at the Battin Chapel
Church, at the Intersection of County Road J Avenue and 216th Drive in Ogden,
Iowa, with the Rev. Donald Simmonds officiating. A memorial service will also be
held in Mason City at 2 p.m., April 15, at the First Presbyterian Church, 201
Willowbrook Drive, with the Rev. Donald Simmonds officiating. A reception will
be held immediately following the memorial service at the Mason City Community
Theatre, 215 South Delaware Avenue. Inurnment will be in the Ogden Cemetery at a
later date. The family requests no flowers. In lieu of flowers memorials may be
directed to the Dwight Wirtz Scholarship Fund c/o Clear Lake School District,
306 First Avenue North, Clear Lake, Iowa 50428 or the Mason City Community
Theatre, 215 South Delaware Avenue, Mason City, Iowa 50401.
Major Erickson Funeral Home and Crematory, Mason City, is in charge of
arrangements.
