83, 9727 Wheelerwood Rd., Clear Lake, died Monday, Nov. 3,
2003 at his home. A graveside service will be held
Thursday, Nov. 6, 11 a.m. at the Clear Lake Cemetery with
the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Military honors will be
provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Visitation will be held
Wednesday, Nov 5, 5 - 7 p.m. at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake. Memorials may be given
to the Glenn R. Johnson Memorial Fund.
Glenn was born Feb. 28, 1920, in Rockwell, Iowa, the son
of Ethan Edward and Edna Maude (Barnhill) Johnson. He
attended school in Rockwell. He worked in the Civilian
Conservation Corp. at Hampton, Beeds Lake. He served in
the U.S. Army during WW II. He worked for Northwestern
Cement in the laboratory for over 33 years, retiring in
1982. Glenn married Gladys Smith July 25, 1943 in Oscelo,
Ark. They moved to Clear Lake in 1954.
Glenn loved to fish. He was a former member of the Clear
Lake V.F.W.
Glenn is survived by his sister, Marvyl Pickens, Clover
City, Calif.; his brother, Floyd C. Johnson and his wife,
Mary, Mason City, Iowa; special friend, Bette Litzel,
Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Tracy English and her
husband, Kirk, New Richland, Minn., Bobbie James and her
husband, Jason, Clear Lake and Levi Litzel, Clear Lake;
eight great-grandchildren, Ashley and Brianna James, Clear
Lake, Stephanie English, Mason City, Kristina, Heather,
Allison and Elizabeth English all of New Richland, and
Christina Litzel of Clear Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and
brother.

90 of rural Mason City, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003 at the
Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 7, at the Major
Erickson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tom Healey, Chaplain
Hospice of North Iowa officiating. Burial was in Mt.
Vernon Cemetery, rural Rockwell, Iowa. Memorials may be
given to the Gladys E. Tesene Memorial Fund.
Gladys was born July 14, 1913 at Swaledale, Iowa, the
daughter of Louis F. and Edna Mary (England) Kruggel. She
graduated from Swaledale High School and attended Iowa
State Teacher's College, Cedar Falls where she received
her teachers certificate. Gladys was married to Walter K.
Tesene on June 4, 1932 in Nashua, Iowa. She lived in
Swaledale for 18 years and rural Clear Lake for 72 years.
Gladys was a member of the Home Improvement Club,
Swaledale Federated Garden Club, CCIC Club, DD Club and
Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.
Gladys is survived by two daughters, Nadine Drennan and
her husband, Bill, New Sharon, Iowa, and Leanne Teachey
and her husband, Doyle, Hilliard, Fla.; and two sons,
David Tesene and his wife, Jan, Manhattan, Kan. and Jay
Tesene, Carson City, Nev.; grandchildren, David and Abby
Tesene, Manhattan, Kan., Brian and Lorraine Tesene,
Manhattan, Kan., Kathleen and Kelly Allen, Seattle, Wash.,
Heather Drennan and James Bowles, Seattle, Wash., Mike and
Denise Moss, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Judy Moss, Washington,
D.C., Suzanne and Tim Hightower, Spearfish, S.D., Kris and

Mary Lu Maguire,
76, a resident of the Willows in Mason City, Iowa and
formerly of Urbandale, Iowa died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003,
at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003,
at the Walnut Hills United Methodist Church in Urbandale.
Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the
service. Private burial services will follow at the
I.O.O.F. Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Indianola, Iowa.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, is in charge
of the arrangements.
Mary Lu was born on Feb. 15, 1927, in Wayne County, Iowa,
the daughter of Glenn and Wessie (Fulton) Conner. She
graduated from Chariton High School and Drake University
with an elementary education major. She married Charles
Maguire on March 30, 1956 in Des Moines.
Mary Lu taught school for 36 years, first in a one-room
Warren County country school and then at Windsor and
Woodlawn Elementary Schools in Des Moines. She retired
from teaching in 1984.
Mary Lu enjoyed traveling, knitting, reading, baking and
loved spending time with family and friends.
She was a member of Walnut Hills United Methodist Church,
P.E.O. Chapter IE, and various educational associations.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Charles Maguire
of Urbandale and the Willows in Mason City; one son, Paul
(Penny) Maguire of Sun City, Az.; one daughter, Deborah
(James) Stanton of Clear Lake; four grandchildren, Todd
(Erica) Maguire of Boise, Idaho, Jerrod Maguire (Kelly
Kowalczyk) of Phoenix, Az., Mark (Melinda) Stanton of
Lincoln, Neb. and Melissa Stanton of Iowa City; two
great-grandchildren, Beck Maguire and Makenna Stanton; one
brother, Robert K. (Marcie) Conner of Indianola, Iowa; one
niece, Dee Gee (David) Blair, of Cherokee, Iowa; three
great-nieces, Jennifer, Elizabeth and Kathleen; and many
special cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

64, of Manchester, Iowa, died on Wednesday, November 5,
2003, at her home in her sleep. Services will be at 10
a.m. on Monday, Nov. 10, at the Manchester United
Methodist Church with the Rev. Andy Baldwin officiating.
Burial will be at the Hansel Cemetery in Garber, Iowa.
Jean was born April 1, 1939, in Iowa City, Iowa, the
daughter of Francis J. and Nellie J. (Hill) Hansel. She
graduated from Manchester High School in 1958. On Oct. 16,
1958, Jean was united in marriage to William D. Hahesy at
St. Mary's Catholic Church in Manchester. Five children
were born to this union. They settled in Manchester, where
Jean was a homemaker. The couple later divorced. Jean
drove school bus for West Delaware Schools for thirteen
years.
Jean was a member of the Manchester V.F.W. Auxiliary. Her
hobbies included genealogy, woodcrafts and collecting
owls. She enjoyed spending time with her family and
grandchildren.
Jean is survived by her parents, Francis and Nellie Hansel
of Manchester; five
children and their spouses, Debra and Ed Simon of Clear
Lake, Bill Hahesy and fiancée, Kendra Carpenter of
Masonville, Barb and Lonnie Aulwes of Strawberry Point,
Richard Hahesy of Manchester, and Daniel and Amy Hahesy of
Manchester; twenty grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren; one sister, Joyce Hansel of Marion,
Iowa; two brothers, Jim and Wanda Hansel of Cedar Rapids
and Larry and Mary Hansel of Manchester; and special
friends, Milo and Leona Letts, Charlotte and Oscar Hicks,
Delpha and Jamie Ostrander, Jeff Penney, Bunk Sickels and
Donnie.
Jean was preceded in death by an infant son, Dennis
Hahesy, in 1961.

83, 3119 Main Ave., Clear Lake, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003,
at Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at the
First Congregational Church, 205 W. 10th Ave N., with the
Rev. Thomas Healey officiating. Burial will be in the
Clear Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 - 7 p.m. on
Wednesday with a Beta Sigma Phi service at 5 p.m. at the
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake.
The family of Pauline I. Bagenstos has requested that
memorial contributions may be given to the First
Congregational Church, Clear Lake, Union Congregational
Church, Hackensack, Minn., or to Hospice of North Iowa in
her memory.
Pauline was born Jan. 6, 1920, in LaPorte City, Benton
County, Iowa, the daughter of Earl S. and Catherine
(Wilson) Young. She graduated from LaPorte City High
School in 1938 and attended business college in Waterloo,
Iowa. She married Earle Bagenstos March 9, 1944 in San
Antonia, Texas. Pauline and her husband owned the
Watertower Paint and Repair Co., where she was the
stenographer and bookkeeper for five years. She enjoyed
fishing, hunting with her husband, nature, as well as
traveling.
Pauline was an active member of P.E.O. Chapter LE, 21st
Century Club, Beta Sigma Phi, Clear Lake Women's Club, and
the Clear Lake Christian Women's Club. She was also a 50
member of Thistle Rebekah Lodge. Pauline was a current
member of the First Congregational Church, Clear Lake.
Pauline is survived by her sister, Emma Turner and her
husband, Warren, Hudson, Iowa; 10 nieces and nephews; as
well as other relatives and many special friends.
Pauline is preceded in death by her parents; husband,
Earle in 1967; three brothers, George, Russell and Robert,
and a sister, Frances Kruse.

90, 903 9th Ave S., Clear Lake, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003
at the Knett Medical Center, Weslaco, Texas. A funeral
service will be held Saturday, Nov. 15, 10 a.m., at the
Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 508 2nd Ave N., with
the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Visitation will be held
6 - 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 14. Interment will be at the
Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Alfred
Larson Memorial Fund.
Alfred was born March 8, 1913, in Clear Lake, the son of
Andrew Peter and Lena Rebecca (Kittleson) Larson. He
worked for the family business, Larson Masonry on
Independence St., (which is now 9th Ave S). He later went
into business with his brothers, Roy Larson and Merle
Larson, doing cement and plastering until his retirement.
Alfred married Anna Mae Kurtz April 20, 1935. They had a
daughter, Beverly. Anna died in 1988.
Alfred married Jeanyce Jacobs on Dec. 31, 1991 in Weslaco,
Texas. They spent their winters in Magic Valley Trailer
Court, Weslaco.
Alfred's hobbies included flower gardening, especially
with iris's and gladiola's, hunting, fishing and working
around his cottage in Red Wing, Minn. He was a member and
past officer of the I.O.O.F., and member of the United
Methodist Church.
Alfred is survived by his wife, Jeanyce Larson, Clear
Lake; daughter, Beverly Elder, Mason City, Iowa;
grandchildren, Elizabeth Villafana and her husband, Manny,
Wayzata, Minn., Sarah Lyons and her husband, Dennis,
Winnetka, Ill., and Jennifer Keough and her husband,
Michael, Whitefish Bay, Wis.; eight great-grandchildren,
Elisa and Manuela Villafana and Elizabeth, Gabrielle, and
Alexandra Lyons and Kathryne, Patrick and Charles Keough;
brothers, Merle Larson and Roy Larson, Clear Lake;
step-children Kathy Hinrichs and her husband, Gene,
Ventura and Mary Hicks and her husband, Sherman, Hackett,
Ark.; step-grandchildren, Scott Hinrichs and his wife,
Heidi and Sarah Thein and her husband, Doug, Ventura, Iowa
and Roxanne Parker and her husband, Wayne, Greenwood, Ark.
Alfred is preceded in death by his parents; his first
wife, Anna Mae, on April 27, 1988; two sisters and three
brothers.

Starkey, 74, of
Clear Lake, died suddenly and unexpectedly in her home
Friday, November 7, 2003. She was a source of inspiration,
guidance, comfort and love to her family and others whose
lives she touched. A funeral service to celebrate her life
will be held Friday, Nov. 14, 1 p.m. at Zion Lutheran
Church, 112 N 4th St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess
and the Rev. Edward Starkey officiating. Visitation will
be held Thursday, Nov. 13 from 7 - 9 p.m. at the Ward-Van
Slyke Colonial Funeral Chapel and one hour preceding the
service at the church. Interment will be held at the Clear
Lake Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran
Church and the American Diabetes Association in her name.
Bonnie, daughter of Joe and Irene Cook, was born on Aug.
26, 1929 near Forest City, Iowa. She spent her entire life
living in north central Iowa. She graduated with the class
of 1946 from Forest City High School and completed her
teacher's training at Waldorf College. Following this,
Bonnie taught school in a one-room country schoolhouse
outside of Forest City in the same area where she was
raised. She then taught fifth and sixth grade in Clarion,
Iowa.
Bonnie and Robert Starkey were married June 14, 1952 in
Forest City. Their wedding was the first ever held in what
was then the new United Methodist Church. They enjoyed 51
blessed years together. She was a devoted wife, cherished
mother, loving grandmother, and caring daughter. Bonnie
was very proud of her family and treasured the times they
spent together.
Bonnie retired from teaching full time to raise her
children but for nearly two decades was a frequent
substitute elementary school teacher in the Clear Lake
Public Schools. She also sold World Book encyclopedias and
Wanda Chair baby equipment to hundreds of families across
north central Iowa. For 18 years, Bonnie focused her
energy and passion on a women's retail clothing store, "Dawne's"
on Main Street in Clear Lake. She enjoyed the challenge of
owning and operating this with her husband, Bob. They
retired in 2000.
Zion Lutheran has been Bonnie's church family for 51
years. She was active in her church and served as
president of the Zion Lutheran Church Women and was a
member of the church council. Additionally, Bonnie spent
several years as a wedding planner at the church. She was
active in various charities. She also played a critical
role in helping a community of displaced people from Laos
establish a new home in Clear Lake. Her faith, strength,
convictions, and nurturing character are well known. She
was loved by many and will be missed by countless people
whose lives she influenced.
She is survived by her mother, Irene Cook, Clear Lake;
son, Dr. Randall Starkey and his wife, Mary Jo, San
Francisco, Calif.; daughter, Dawne Starkey Sipe and her
husband Dr. James Sipe, Golden Valley, Minn.;
grandchildren, Joe and Jenna Starkey and Rachel and
Christopher Sipe; brother-in-law, Richard Starkey and his
wife, Judy, Ft. Francis, Canada; and several cousins,
aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.
Her husband, Bob, who died July 21 of this year and her
father, Joe Cook, preceded Bonnie in death.

47, 214 Mars Hill Dr., Clear Lake, died Monday, Nov. 10,
2003 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason
City, Iowa. Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 14, at
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake. The Rev. Ed.
Bartz officiated. Following the service she was cremated.
Inurnment will take place at Indian Mound Cemetery,
Humboldt, Iowa, at a later date. Memorials may be given to
the Debbie K. Frank Memorial Fund in c/o Ada Hill, 214
Mars Hill Dr., Clear Lake, IA 50428.
Debbie was born July 10, 1957, in Algona, Iowa, the
daughter of Lynn and Eugenia (Bosch) Tobey. At the time of
her death she was working at Liberty Square in Nora
Springs.
Debbie is survived by her husband, Randy Frank; children,
Sean and Brandon Frank, and Adam, Angie and Drew Rosendahl;
granddaughter, Alexis Rosendahl; siblings, Ada Hill,
Bonnie Scheibel and her husband, Rudy, Terry Tobey and his
wife, Ozzie, and Dwayne Tobey and his wife, Becky;
sisterin-law, Darlene Tobey; and many nieces and nephews.
Debbie was preceded in death by her parents; sisters,
Janice VanHorn and Connie Funk; brothers, Richard Tobey
and infant brother, Bruce Tobey.

99, of 7 Marflow St., Ventura, Iowa, formerly of Dallas,
Wis., died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003 at the Muse Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral Services were held Monday, Nov. 17, at Ventura
United Methodist Church with the Rev. Audrey Young
officiating. Interment was Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the New
Hope-Pine Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery in Ridgeland,
Wis.
Helen Josephine (Johnson) Guingrich was born the eldest of
five children to John and Hilda (Lee) Johnson on May 23,
1904 at Ridgeland, Wis. She attended a country school in
the Ridgeland area and then moved to Detroit. There she
met her future husband, Chester R. Guingrich, and they
were wed on May 14, 1927 in Detroit. To this union was
born one child, Gloria. When the depression hit they moved
to Milwaukee where Chester could find work and she found
employment at Sears and Roebuck. She worked as a school
cook for the Underwood School in Wauwatosa, Wis. In 1952
they moved to a family farm near Dallas, Wis. and she
continued as a cook for the Dallas School. Her greatest
love and enjoyment was being with family and friends.
Dancing with Chester was something she enjoyed. An active
gardener and avid berry picker, she always had a sense of
where there were berries to be picked for her jams and
jellies which she shared with her grandchildren. Lefse,
bread, and donuts were her particular specialties in the
kitchen. Her daily dinners with the Ventura Senior
Citizens were a regular source of enjoyment. There was
nothing better than having coffee and a plate of fresh
cookies with her family and friends. Her church membership
remained in the Ridgeland Methodist Church in Wisconsin,
but she thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship at the Ventura
United Methodist Church.
Those thankful in sharing Helen's life include her only
daughter, Gloria and her husband, Ivan Taylor, Ventura;
her six grandchildren, Pam Schmidt and her husband, Gary,
Tucson, Az., Tom Taylor and his wife, Else, Ventura, Peggy
Baldwin and her husband, Mark, Cedar Falls, Iowa, Patty
Keller and her husband, Brett, Vista, Calif., Penny
Sturges and her husband, Doug, Rockwell, Iowa and Tim
Taylor and his wife, Denise, Dallas, Texas; 20 great-
grandchildren, many brother and sister-in-laws and nieces
and nephews.
She was proceeded in death by her husband, Chester in
1990; three sisters, Isabelle Moen, Alice Beiswanger,
Nellie O. Flannagan and one brother, Arnold Johnson.

Nell Summers, 91, of Clear Lake and formerly of West Des
Moines, Iowa, died Friday, Nov. 14, 2003 at Oakwood Care
Center, Clear Lake. A funeral service to celebrate her
life will be held Thursday, Nov. 20, 2 p.m., at Clear Lake
United Methodist Church, 508 2nd Ave. N, Clear Lake, with
the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Interment will be
Friday, Nov. 21, 2 p.m. at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des
Moines, with the Rev. Randy Ehrhardt officiating. A brief
visitation will be held in the Mauseleum at Resthaven
Cemetery one hour before burial. Visitation will be
Wednesday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake,
from 2 to 4 p.m. and one hour preceding the service at the
church.
Memorials may be made to Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake,
Hospice of North Iowa, West Des Moines Christian Church,
and Clear Lake United Methodist Church.
Virginia was born Feb. 11, 1912 in Valley Junction, Iowa.
She was the sixth of eight children born to William
Emerson and Leona May (Blackman) Tuttle. She graduated
from Valley High School in 1929 and worked for Dean Studio
in Des Moines. She married Blair S. Summers on Feb. 14,
1945, and their only child, Mary Jane, was born nine
months later. Virginia was church secretary at West Des
Moines Christian Church, where she sang in the choir and
taught Sunday School. She and her husband and many church
friends kept a church vital and growing without benefit of
modern technology.
Virginia later worked for Look Magazine (Cowles
Communications) and Down Computer in Des Moines. She
retired in 1974 following the death of her husband and
helped to care for an older sister. She moved to Clear
Lake in 1994 to make her home with her daughter and
family.
She was "Grandma Ginna" to three granddaughters, and in
2000 became a great-grandmother. She lived a simple life,
devoted totally to God and to her family. She enjoyed
simple pleasures and dearly loved keeping up with her
friends and extended families "out East" and "out West" as
well as in West Des Moines. She was known for her bean-bag
clowns and other craft items, and for her hugs. She was a
member of West Des Moines Christian Church and of Clear
Lake United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Jane Crail and her
husband, Larry, of Clear Lake; granddaughters Leslie Lagan
and her husband, Kyle, of Lee's Summit, Mo., Dr. Hilary
Reynolds of Burlington, Iowa and Abigail Reynolds of Iowa
City, Iowa; great-granddaughters, Lauren and Bailey Lagan;
her last surviving sibling, Marian A. Williams of Norwalk,
Iowa; son-in-law, James Reynolds and his wife, Jane, of
Clear Lake; a step-son, Virgil Summers and his wife,
Debbie, of Altoona, Penn. and many dear nieces, nephews
and in-laws who meant so much to her.
She has joined her husband, Blair; her infant
granddaughter, Sarah Julienne Reynolds; her sisters,
Gladys, Vivian and Marjorie; brothers, Homer, Clyde and
Robert, and many dear relatives and friends. Soli Deo
Gloria.

79, 5365 170th St., Clear Lake, died Monday, Nov. 17,
2003, at the I.O.O.F. Home, Mason City. Funeral services
will be held Thursday, Nov. 20, 10 a.m., with the Rev.
Dean Hess officiating. Visitation will be held 4:30 -7:30
p.m. Wednesday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.
Interment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery, Hwy 122
W, Mason City, Iowa. Memorials may be given to the Herbert
Mestad Memorial Fund.
Herbert was born Oct. 2, 1924, in Highlandville, Iowa, the
son of Olaf and Alma (Amundson) Mestad. He moved with his
parents to a farm south of Clear Lake, then to Rural
Ventura, Iowa. He graduated from Ventura High School in
1944. Herbert served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He
married Helen Oettchen in Dec. 7, 1946 in Clear Lake. They
farmed in the rural Rockwell area. They moved to a farm
south of Clear Lake where he farmed until his retirement.
After his retirement, he enjoyed camping and fishing. He
loved his Saturday morning breakfast at Burger King with
his brother.
Herbert is survived by his three sons, Lynn Mestad and his
wife, Sharon, Clear Lake, Steven Mestad and his wife,
Lori, Shakopee, Minn., and Brian Mestad and his wife,
Gail, Plymouth, Ind.; a brother, Orval Mestad and his
wife, Trina, Clear Lake; a sister, Marlys Davis and her

Herbert was preceded in death by his parents and his

Jeremy D. Johnson
Jeremy D. Johnson,
age 24, of Nerstrand, Minn., died on Wednesday, Nov. 5,
2003 due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Jeremy was born on Sept. 5, 1979 in Blue Earth, Minn. to
Craig E. and Teresa D. (Dresback) Johnson. He graduated
from Faribault High School in 1998 and also from North
Hennepin Technical College, Brooklyn Park, Minn. He was
employed as a mechanic at Inver Grove Ford and was also a
graduate of the Ford Asset Program. Jeremy was involved in
stock car racing, serving as the "tire guy" in the pit
crew.
He is survived by his parents, Craig and Terri; three
siblings, Tracy Johnson, and her fiancé, George Hemphill,
of Faribault, Minn., Marcus Johnson and Randall Johnson,
both of Nerstrand; grandparents, Beatrice and Ray Smoley
of Buffalo Center, Iowa, Clyde Johnson, Sr. of Clear Lake,
and Deane and Shirley Dresback of Winterset, Iowa; one
great-grandmother, Marcella Johnson, of Mason City, Iowa
and many aunts, uncles and extended family members.
Cy Kopecky
Cy Kopecky,
88, World War II hero, recipient of the Distinguished
Flying Cross and four air medals, died Thursday, Nov. 13,
2003, at Hospice Center, Gainesville, Fla., after an
extended illness. Cy flew 25 missions over Germany in a
B24 as a waist gunner in the 1940's. Retired Airforce
Technical Sargent Kopecky was an Air Force ROTC instructor
at the University of Florida from 1958 - 1964. He and his
wife, Geri, were deployed at several overseas bases
including Guam, Germany and Scotland.
Born and raised in Mason City, Iowa, on Nov. 1, 1915, he
was a hometown basketball star. He began college there and
graduated from Santa Fe College, Gainesville, in the
1970's. As a young man he worked in the Civilian
Conservation Corp.
After retiring from the Air Force in 1967, Cy was a
successful car salesman at the Dodge dealers in
Gainesville and Ocala, winning the top salesman award in
1981.
An avid sportsman, he was a trophy fisherman, displaying a
12 pound, 8 ounce bass caught in Orange Lake and pictures
of 10-foot marlins from Mazatland, Mexico. Enjoying golf
and bowling, he set records and won awards in the senior
bowling league last year, bowling a 634 series (150 pins
over average) and qualifying for the Century Club.
A faithful member of First Lutheran Church, Cy served as
head usher.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Geri, in May, 1996.
Cy is survived by two sisters and their husbands, Millie
and Frank Thomsen, Clear Lake, and Rosalyn and Don Ames,
Fremont, Neb.; a sister-in-law and her husband, Ginny and
Tom Hargarten, Santa Fe Lake, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Nov. 18 at First Lutheran
Church, Gainesville.

Helen Haugen
Helen Haugen,
85, of Glenwood, Minn., formerly of Lucan, Minn., died
Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at the Glenwood Retirement
Village.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 22 at Glenwood
Lutheran Church. Interment was in Lucan, Minn.
Helen was born July 20, 1918 to Hagen and Ethel (Rosten)
Moe in Starbuck, Minn. She was baptized and confirmed at
Indherred Lutheran Church. She grew up on the family farm
on the shores of Pelican Lake. Helen married Palmer T.
Haugen in 1938 at Starbuck. They lived in Pope County
until 1963, when they moved to Fargo, N.D. for three years
and then to Minneapolis for eight years. They moved to
Lucan, Minn. in 1974, where they made their home until
Palmer's death in 1988. She moved to Starbuck for four
years but returned to Lucan in 1993 where she and her
daughter, Kathy, lived. Helen became a resident at the
Glenwood Retirement Village in July, 2003.
Helen worked at many vocations during her lifetime. They
owned and operated the Terrace Cafe and Produce Station
for several years. Helen worked at the nursing home and
hospital in Glenwood, and as a cook at NDSU in Fargo, as
well as owning and operating her own floral business.
Helen was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lucan,
a member of the Glenwood VFW Auxiliary and a charter
member of the Pope County Historical Society. Helen was a
great cook and loved cooking and baking for her family,
playing cards, singing and telling jokes. She brought up
her children well, teaching them how to cook (well, most
of them anyway), the importance of education and family
love, and most of all, not to be be afraid of trying new
ideas.
She is survived by her children, Treva and her husband,
David Benton, Glenwood, Pauline and her husband, David
Hoffman, Glenwood, Virginia Cahoon, Clear Lake, Sonia
Byrd, Nashville, Tenn., Peter and his wife, Darla Haugen,
New Hope, Minn., Kathleen Haugen, Lucan, Minn.; nephews
Richard and his wife, Kathi Moe of Ridgecrest, Calif., and
Jack and his wife, Judith, Moe of Highlands, Calif. She
was also proud of her 25 grandchildren, 40
great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren, as
well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Palmer;
grandchildren, Peggy Thorpe and David Paul Benton;
great-grandchild, Courtney Galvin; brothers, Herman and
George Moe; sisters, Agnes Swensrud, Alma Prokasky,
Clarice Branch and Margaret Moe.
Rosemary J. DeWitt
Rosemary J. DeWitt,
78, of 8014 338th St, Hanlontown, Iowa, died at her home
Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003. Funeral services were held
Monday, Nov. 24, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel,
Clear Lake, Iowa, with Pastor Ed Bard officiating.
Interment was at Mt. Vernon Township Cemetery, Rural
Burchinal, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Rosemary
DeWitt Memorial Fund.
Rosemary was born May 28, 1925, the daughter of Francis
and Edna (Buffington) Latham, in rural Mt. Vernon
Township, rural Clear Lake. Rosemary graduated from Clear
Lake High School in 1943, and married Kenneth DeWitt July
6, 1943 in Robinsdale, Minn. Kenneth and Rosemary then
farmed in the Hanlontown area. Rosemary loved to garden
and raise flowers. She was loved by her grandchildren for
her dill pickles and fresh baked rolls. She was also known
for chicken and noodles.
Rosemary is survived by her husband, Kenneth DeWitt, of
rural Hanlontown; seven children, Janelle Nelson and her
husband, Rich, Rose Creek, Minn., Terri Datema and her
husband, John, Clear Lake, Tom DeWitt and his wife,
Sharon, of Rogerville, Mo., Jim DeWitt and his wife, Barb,
of Eaton, Ohio, Connie Oltman and her husband, Mark,
Manly, Iowa, Karen Mundt, and her husband, Jim, Chariton,
Iowa, Billie DeWitt and Darius Piippo, Mason City, Iowa;
five sisters, Frances Margaret Rutledge, and her husband,
Lew, of Grand Rapids, Mich., Helen Latham of Wheaton,
Ill., Beverly Swan of St. Louis Park, Minn., Veronica
Enabnit and her husband, Paul, of Mesa, Az. and Lucy Peevy,
of Tulsa, OK; one brother, John Latham of Blakesburg,
Iowa; 25 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Rosemary was preceded in death by her parents; a sister,
Betty Bowers, and a brother, Richard Latham.

Schmoll, 86,
formerly of 813 North 12th Street, Clear Lake, died
Friday, Nov. 21, 2003 at the Heritage Care Center in Mason
City. Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 24 at
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev.
James Allard of the Clear Lake Church of Christ
officiating. Burial was at the Clear Lake Cemetery.
Memorials may be left to the Lee Jane Schmoll Memorial
Fund.
Lee Jane was born Aug. 8, 1917 in Oklahoma. She married
Frank Davis and to this union had four children, Randall,
Robert, Richard, and Nevelynn. She later married Wilbur E.
Schmoll on April 21, 1973. After their marriage she helped
Wilbur in their insurance business as well as worked for
Opportunity Village. She worked for Opportunity Village
for twelve years, and then volunteered there for many
years afterwards. She enjoyed vegetable gardening, baking
and cooking.
Lee Jane is survived by two sons, Randall and Richard;
grandchildren, Carl Davis, Janice Davis, and Robbie, all
of Oklahoma, Robert Davis of Texas, Ruth Gwin of Colorado,
Lydia Kidder of Arkansas, Georgia Nichols and Marsha
Snyder, both of Iowa; great-grandchildren, Joel, Jessi,
Shawn, Bobbie, Corey, Colby, Matt, and Zack and
great-great-grandchildren Damon, Parker, Clay, Jesse and
Bailey. Also surviving is one sister Wilde Reeves of
Oklahoma, and one daughter-in-law Rosalea Davis of Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband,
Wilbur; son, Robert, daughter, Nevelynn and two sisters.
