Evelyn (Walker) Peterson, 80, died May 21, 2009 in Lakewood,
Calif. with her family at her side.
Evelyn Walker was born March 30, 1929.
She is survived by four children, Rick, Dennis, Suzzette and
Diana; two sisters, Irene (John) Lambert and Edna (Mike)
Pickar; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Russell after 52
years of marriage.

Loretta Kehret, 91, of Charles City, died Saturday, May 30,
2009, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles
City.
Funeral services for Loretta Kehret will be held 10:30 a.m.
Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Gary
Van Wert will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside
Cemetery, Charles City.
Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City
from 5-8 p.m. Monday. Visitation will continue at the

Loretta Lillian Moltz Kehret was born May 25, 1918, at
Huron S.D., the daughter of Fred and Martha (Dahlke)
Moltz. She received her education at Wolsey, S.D. and
graduated from Charles City High School and Hamilton
Business College. On July 5, 1944, she was united in
marriage to Oscar Kehret at Austin, Minn. Loretta
worked for Equitable Life Insurance from 1939-1944, the
Adjutant General of Texas from 1944-1945 and for over 22
years at Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company. She was a
member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Faith Circle,
Charles City Senior Citizens, and retired UAW Workers.
Her interests included gardening, flowers, sewing,
wildlife, horses and listening to gospel music. Loretta
looked forward to sharing her life with her family,
always taking special interest in her grandchildren.
Living family members include two sons, Douglas (Maxine)
Kehret of Waterloo and Dale (Colleen) Kehret of Charles
City; five grandchildren, Mindy (Mitch) McIntosh, Dan (Alissa)
Kehret, Bill Kehret, Kelly (Brian) Johnson and Jennifer
Kehret; a great grandson, Eli Kehret; and two
sisters-in-law, Leona Kehret of Pinetop, Ariz. and
Eloise (Glenn) Petersen of Urbandale.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on April
24, 2003; two sisters, Hazel Teeple and Evelyn Langbehn;
and two brothers, Archie Moltz and V.F. “Bud” Moltz.

Marreld Cecil King, 89, of Charles City passed away on June
1, 2009, at Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.
Funeral services will be held at the Lindstrom Funeral Home
in Riceville on Friday, June 5, at 2 p.m., with Pastor
James Allard officiating. Burial will be in Riverside
Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. and
one hour before services at the funeral home.
Marreld Cecil King was born April 23, 1920, on the family
farm northeast of Riceville, to his parents George and
Eva (Johnson) King. He attended country school through
the fourth grade.
He was united in marriage to Bernice Seidel on Oct. 9, 1940,
at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Riceville. To this
union two daughters and four sons were born.
Marreld farmed for a few years, owned and operated a
feed truck in Riceville, and worked at Oliver
Corporation in Charles City before retiring after 31
years. Marreld was an avid hunter and fisherman. He
loved to collect guns and shotgun shells. He traveled to
many states to attend gun and cartridge shows. He won
many trophies and awards for his efforts.
Marreld is survived by one daughter, Darlys and Rick Rogers
of Osage; four sons: Fred and Sharon King of Charles
City, Duane and Cleone King of Floyd, Wayne and Deborah
King of Pensacola. Fla., and Cecil and Kathleen King of
Robbins; one brother, Melvin (Bud) King of Austin,
Minn.; and a brother-in-law, Harold and Wilma Seidel of
Riceville; 20 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, six
great great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bernice; a
daughter, Leona Parish; a great-granddaughter, Kellie
Sue King; a great great-granddaughter, Aspen Faith
Richards; and five sisters.

Ronald Pitz, 70, of Hoodsport, Wash. formerly of Ionia, died
May 2, 2009, at the nursing home in Shelton,
Wash., after a lengthy illness.
Cremated with services being held at a later date in

In life, Ronald was born June 28, 1938, in
Ionia, the son of Leo and Cora Green Pitz.
He served nine years in the U.S. Army.

Rhonda; three grandchildren; two sisters,
Connie (Jim) Bleitz of Council Bluffs and
Shirley Pitz of New Hampton; one brother,

2009, at the Hospice Inpatient Unit in
Mason City.

at the Immaculate Conception Catholic
Church in Charles City. Monsignor
Stanley J. Hayek will celebrate the
Mass. Burial will be held in Calvary
Cemetery, Charles City. Military honors
will be conducted by the Charles City
Ceremonial Unit.

Clair Arthur Nehls was born May 31, 1924, at Marble Rock, the
son of Arthur and Anna (Reis) Nehls. He
graduated from the Floyd High School.
After high school, Clair served 2 ½
years in the United States Navy in the
South Pacific. On October 5, 1946, he
was united in marriage to LaDonna Mae
Simerson at Chicago, Ill. Clair was
employed for 34 ½ years at White Farm.
In his earlier years Clair coached
Little League Baseball in Charles City.
He was a member of the Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church in Charles
City. His interests included fishing,
hunting and spending time with his
family.
Living family members include his 11 children, David

Dawn D. Cheney, 85, of rural Greene, died Sunday, June 7,
2009, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason
City.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 10,
2009, at the First Presbyterian Church, 319 East
Traer, Greene, with burial in the Rose Hill
Cemetery, Greene.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at Reid’s
Funeral Chapel, 519 North First Street, Greene
and will continue Wednesday at the church one
hour before services.
Dawn Delane Dix was born July 23, 1923, at Bristow, Butler County,
the Daughter of Edward and Iska (Wiard) Dix.
She received her education in the public schools graduating
from Greene High School in 1941. Following
graduation she taught at Country School until
her marriage to Paul W. Cheney on February 20,
1942. They made their home on a Century Farm
east of Greene until her death.
Dawn was active in the Greene Community Choir, the
Presbyterian Church Choir, Bible Study and
sewing group.
She enjoyed her grandchildren’s sporting events, painting,
recreational golf, the country club and coffee
at the bakery. She was a “people person” who
loved to cook and to entertain. Most of all she
loved her family and treasured the time they
spent together. She will be sadly missed.
Living family members include her children: Bruce Edward
Cheney of Greene, Diane Dee Eckenrod of Van
Horne, Lana Sue (Charles) Ringus of Clear Lake,
Craig Paul (Eileen) Cheney of Greene, Rachel
Dawn (Doug) Watson of Rocky Mount, NC; 12
grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one
sister Twila (Duane) Smith of Greene;
sisters-in-law Audrey Dix and Marilyn Ray; and
many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Paul
Cheney, brothers Minor Dix and Kermit (Lola )
Dix; one sister Darlene (Charles) Ray; her
parents; and son-in-law Jerry Eckenrod.

Gary William Rottler, 64, of Greene, died at sunset
surrounded by family on Saturday, June 6,
2009, at his home on Lake Panorama, Panora.
Gary died from complications of cancer after
being diagnosed in January of this year.

Gary was born Nov. 7, 1944, in Mason City, the son of Vernon
Christian and Phyllis Leona Rottler. He
married Sara Jane Green on January 9, 1965,
at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in
Ames while both were students at Iowa State
University. From this union came five
children. The marriage ended in 1988. From
an early age, Gary knew he wanted to be a
farmer. After graduating from Greene
Community High School in 1963, Gary attended
Iowa State University and graduated with
honors with a Bachelor of Science degree in
Farm Operation in 1967. At Iowa State
University, Gary was president of the Alpha
Gamma Rho fraternity and was initiated into
the Cardinal Key Club. Upon graduation, he
returned to Greene to farm with his father.
In 1973, Gary and the family were featured
in the documentary film, The American
Farmer. Gary farmed the family land for 42
years until his death. Gary enjoyed
watching sunsets, beautifying his
properties, fishing, hunting, golfing,
boating on Lake Panorama with his children
and grandchildren, traveling, spending time
with friends and following his beloved ISU
Cyclones. "Garbo" will be remembered for his
endless 'to do' lists, boundless energy to
complete them, positive outlook, passion for
living life to its fullest, appreciation for
family, close friends and love of the Iowa
land.
Gary is survived by four sons, Brad (Rhonda) Rottler of
Greene, Mark (Ann Marie) Rottler of
Rockford, Ill., Jeff (Laura Campos) Rottler
of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, Tom
(Margie Mulligan) Rottler of San Diego,
Calif., daughter Angela (Josh Ter Louw) of
Seattle, Wa.; grandchildren Matthew, Robbie
and Jennifer Rottler of Greene; Ethan and
Emmiana Rottler of Rockford, Ill.; Kai
Rottler of San Diego, Calif.; Rosie Ter Louw
of Seattle, Wa.; brother Steven Rottler of
Des Moines and family, sisters Ann (Brian)
Kruse of Greene, and family, Morgan Rivers
(Cindy Chicoine) of Des Moines, Susy
Robinette (Ron Rosenblatt) of West Des
Moines and family.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law,
JoDee Rottler.

Clarus “Corky” Kuykendall, 78, of Floyd,
died Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at Mercy Medical
Center in Mason City.
Funeral services for Corky Kuykendall will
be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Hauser
Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Robert
Holdorf, of Grace United Methodist Church,
will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside
Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Clarus Eugene Kuykendall was born January
12, 1931, in Mitchell County, the son of
Henry and Mildred (Muth) Kuykendall. He
received his education in Mitchell County.
Corky proudly served in the United States
Army during the Korean Conflict and received
numerous medals for his service. On June 12,
1954, he was united in marriage to Norma
Joyal at Osage. Corky was a farmer,
construction worker and custodian for
several years in the Charles City school
system. He was a former member of the V.F.W.
His interests included flower and vegetable
gardening, bird watching and going to the
Mississippi. Corky will also be remembered
for his love of dogs.
Living family members include his wife of 54
years, Norma Kuykendall of Floyd; six
children, Ramona (Dennis) Onken of Charles
City, Eugene Kuykendall of Des Moines, Mark
(Sandy) Kuykendall of Floyd, Mike (Lori)

Brenda J. Spangler, 44, of Charles City died
Thursday, June 4, 2009, in Charles City of
natural causes.
Inurnment will take place at 1 p.m. on
Wednesday, June 17, at Riverside Cemetery,

Community Center in Nashua on Tuesday, June
16, from noon until 4 p.m.
Brenda Jean Spangler was born May 31, 1965,
in Missouri. She lived for years in
California before moving to Nashua, in 1995.
Living family members include three sons:
John, Matthew and Timothy Williams of
Nashua; her father, Paul Williams of Charles
City; a sister, Melinda Williams of Charles
City; and a brother, Paul Williams Jr. of
California. She also left behind two
grandchildren, Harley Williams and Zoe

special friend, John Farrell.

Judy Joanne Halsne, 55, of 500 South 8th St.
in Clear Lake, died June 9, 2009, at the
Good Shepherd Health Care Center, Mason
City. Judy gifted her body to the University
of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences.
It is the “Gift of Life” to let her body be
taken to help others to have a chance at a
better life.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m.
on Friday June 12, at the Ward Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake,
with Rev. Pam Runge officiating. Visitation
will be held from 3 p.m. until the time of

Judy Joanne Cummings was born Aug. 10,
1953, the daughter of Frank and Shirley (Goodpasture)
Cummings. She was raised by her parents
Shirley and Pete Schmidt in Clear Lake. Judy
graduated from Clear Lake High School.
Judy was united in marriage to Denny Simmer
to this union two children were born; Chad
and Shelley. She later married Jim Halsne to
this union two children were born; Brandi
and Derek.
Judy was self employed and subcontracted
her work, she was in the business of
building circuit boards.
Judy’s hobbies included going to garage
sales, clearance shopping and attending the
races. Her greatest love was spending time
with her family and friends. Judy’s favorite
restaurant was The Barrell in Clear Lake!
Judy is survived by her mother, Shirley

Claude Willie Graham was born Dec. 24, 1916,
at Bristow, the son of John and Minnie (Dickman)
Graham. He attended the Greene High
School. On Aug. 3, 1940, he was united in
marriage to Wilma Jean Lewis at Powersville.
From June 29, 1945 to July 16, 1946, he
served in the United States Army. Claude
farmed with his father until he was 18 years
old and then spent two years in the C.C.C.
in Hampton. Later he was employed at White
Farm where he retired after 40 years. He
was a member of the Trinity United Methodist
Church, V.F.W. and the Midis Church Circle.
His interests included spray painting with
his sons, working, and spending time with
his wife.
Living family members include his wife, Jean
Graham of Charles City; three children,
Claudia (Robert) Pine of Leland, N.C., James
(Linda) Graham of Modesto, Calif. and John
Graham of Des Plaines, Ill.; five
grandchildren, Melissa (William) Alexander,
Susan (David) Novais, Sarah Graham, Robert
(Pamela) Pine, Paul Graham; five
great-grandchildren, Kathryn Alexander,
Shelby Alexander, Olivia Novais, Juliana
Novais and Makena Pine; brother, Robert
(Delores) Graham of Nashua; brother-in-law,
Ronald Krueger of Zebulon, N.C.; and many
nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
sisters, Helen Jenson and June Krueger;
brother, John Graham, Jr.

Alice Leona Brown Peterson was born March
28, 1916, in Estherville, the daughter of
Grandville “Dick” and Olive (Allen) Brown.
She attended school in Estherville and
graduated from West Union High School. On
March 20, 1943, she was united in marriage
to John G. Peterson in Minneapolis, Minn.
Alice was a nurse’s aide at the Chautauqua
Guest Homes in Charles City and the Faith
Home in Osage. She was a member of the
First Baptist Church in Osage.
Living family members include two children,
Karen (Roger) Turner of Cedar Rapids and
Glenn (Mercedes) Peterson of Alsip, Ill.; a
sister, Vivian VanValkenburg of Omaha,
Neb..; a brother-in-law, Elmer Oelkers of
Dodge, Neb.; a special niece, Coe Lytle of
Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

husband John in 1976; an infant son, Charles

Maureen was born Feb. 2, 1941, in Charles
City, the daughter of Chauncey and Mercedes
(Warrington) Kay. She married Robert
Harrold, in 1957, and had three children
together. They later divorced and Maureen
moved to Mt. Prospect, Ill.. where she met
and married Vincent Sciortino in 1975. They
resided in Schaumburg, Ill.. until 1990 when
they moved to Longmont. They were married
for 33 years.
First and foremost, Maureen loved being a
mother and grandmother. She also enjoyed
gardening, cooking, baking and quilting.
She was not only known for her inspirational
battle with cancer but also for her
tremendous love and support for her children
as a single parent for many years. She had
a beautiful, contagious smile and enjoyed
sharing the gift of life. These qualities
will be greatly missed by her surviving
friends and family. Survivors include her daughters Kimberly
(Scott) Swanson of Boca Raton, Fla., David
(Michelle) Harrold of Delray Beach, Fla.,
Brenda (Brian) Laartz of Niwot, Col.; and
her seven grandchildren: Brooke and Brianna
Laartz, Ashley, Brandon and Zachary Harrold
and Greg and Grant Swanson. Further
survivors are her brother, Larry (Peggy) Kay
of Charles City, and her sisters: Sharon
Kline of Mason City, Susan (Dean) Gruver of

Gordon L. Thompson, 80, of Mason City died of heart failure
on June 24, 2009 at the Iowa Odd Fellows and Orphans Home, Mason
City.
A Memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Monday, July 6, at
the Nazarene Church, located at 507 South Carolina Avenue, Mason
City, IA. Any memorials should be directed to the Salvation Army or
Caring Pregnancy Center, both in Mason Cit.y
Gordon Lester Thompson was born July 14, 1928 in Madison,
Wis., the son of John and Ina (White) Thompson. He spent most of
his childhood years in Des Moines and, later, Charles City. He
graduated from Charles City High School in 1946. He served in the
United States Army from 1946 through 1947, being stationed in
Fairbanks, Alaska. After discharge from the Army, Gordon graduated
from Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls. He married Lois (Hantsbarger)
on June 3, 1951, in Cherokee. Lois died July 23, 2000. Gordon
married Janice Krieger on Nov. 13, 2004.
Gordon taught math and industrial arts in Dumont in the early
1950’s. Then, after several years of working in sales for the
pharmaceutical industry, Gordon returned to teaching in 1967 as
instructor of the Trades and Industry program at Mason City High
School. Finally, beginning in 1980, he served as pastor of Mason
City Covenant Church, from which he retired in 1995. Gordon had
lived in Mason City since 1960.
Survivors include his wife Janice; his son, Kent (Kathy)
Thompson of White Bear Lake, Minn.; his daughter, Jolene (Bill)
Backlin of Mason City; three brothers, John of St. Paul, Minn.;
Robert (Darlene) of Jesup and Douglas of Berea, Ohio; one sister,
Virginia Thompson of Charles City; and six grandchildren: Aaron and
Jeffrey Backlin and Amy, Matthew, Alissa and Nathan Thompson. Also
surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife,
Lois; his sisters Winifred (Donald) Zierath and Dorothy (Robert)
Ward; and his brothers Donald and Russell.
Gordon wanted everyone to remember that any good he
accomplished in life was because of the grace and goodness of Christ
his Savior.

Thelma was born on Nov. 19, 1914 in Albert Lea, Minn., the
daughter of Talmer and Stina (Stoen) Dahlen. They
moved to Frost, Minn. where she lived for 13 years
and was confirmed and baptized into the Lutheran
Faith. Her family moved to Marble Rock in 1929,
where she graduated from Marble Rock High School in
1932. Thelma was united in marriage to Blaine
Adelbert Crowell on June 16, 1934 in Charles City.
The couple moved to Saginaw, Michigan where they
lived for 13 years. In 1945 her daughter, Sheila was
born. The family then moved to Rockford where Thelma
opened up her own shop. She operated it until 1947,
when she developed health problems. She then began
working with her husband at Crowell’s Auto Body
where she ran errands and was the bookkeeper. Thelma
moved to the Nora Springs Care Center in 2005. She
enjoyed her time there and developed many wonderful
friendships with the staff and residents. She
enjoyed playing games of 500 with the residents and
playing the piano for all who would come to listen,
until her final days.
Thelma graduated from the Saginaw School of Cosmetology and
received her Michigan license on March 20, 1936. She
also attended LaJames Beauty School and received her
Iowa license on August 15, 1939.
Thelma was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church. She
was also involved in Chapter E.D. P.E.O., the
Deborah and Miriam Circles and her Bible Study
group. Thelma had a wide variety of interests. She
enjoyed sports, she and Blaine were avid golfers,
and helped to organize the Rockford Golf and Country
Club. She also was a fan of the Hawkeyes, the
Vikings and the Twins. Thelma was also a great cook,
her specialties being pies and Norwegian recipes.
She loved to play the piano. Thelma was a very
organized person, her house was always clean and she
was always well dressed. She also believed in
working hard to get things accomplished. She enjoyed
going out to eat and then shopping with her
granddaughter. She also had a special love for
animals, and wouldn’t turn away a stray. Most of
all, she loved her family and the time she spent
with them.
Those left to cherish her memory include her
grandchildren, Ryan P. Riebe and Heidi J. (Tim)
Dunderdale; son-in-law, Rolf Riebe; and, in
November, she would have become a great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Blaine in 2002;
daughter, Sheila G. Riebe in 2003; and her parents.

LaVerne William Jacobs was born Jan. 30, 1933, in
Plainfield, the son of Forrest and Malita (Wefel) Jacobs. He
received his education in Charles City. On Oct. 15, 1949, he
was united in marriage to Juanita Robeson at Lancaster, Mo.
LaVerne farmed all his life, was proprietor of Jacobs Trucking,
was employed for 20 years at Salsbury Laboratories and also
worked at Jacobs Elevator. He was a member of Saint John
Evangelical Lutheran Church. LaVerne was a farmer at heart and
enjoyed driving semi and taking road trips to Wisconsin. His
family was always important to him and he would visit with them
daily, taking special interest in the grandchildren and great
grandchildren.
Living family members include his wife, Juanita of Charles
City; three daughters, Linda (Les) Hobert of Charles City, Debra
(Tim) Hovey of Charles City and DeeAnn (Craig) Moline of Boone;
seven grandchildren, Wendy (Lindsey) Botkin, Jeff (Misty) Hobert,

Maxine Doris Hansen was born Dec. 23, 1927, in St. Ansgar,
the daughter of John and Anna (Kellner) Wolff. She attended
grade school in St. Ansgar and rural country school near
Fredericksburg and the Republic area near Nashua. She also
attended the Nashua High School.
On Nov. 16, 1945, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, she
married Fred R. Hansen. To this union two children were born.
The couple lived and farmed in the Nashua area and in 1953, they
moved to their farm east of Nashua where they continued farming
until 2001. Maxine was an active Member of the Republic Church,
enjoyed playing cards and will be remembered for being a great
baker and cook. She was a faithful supporter of her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s sporting events. She
loved her family and was a great mother, grandmother and
great-grandmother.
Maxine is survived by a son, Richard (Carolyn) Hansen; a
daughter, Linda (Gerald) Smith, all of Nashua; six
grandchildren, Tammi (Steve) Sudol, Kim (Mark) Walk, Shawna
(David) DePuew, Jason (Marisa) Hansen, Kendra (Kevin) McCall and
Shannon Tripp; four step grandchildren, twelve

Bernard A. “Bernie” Kerian, 72, of Waverly, passed away on
Thursday, June 25, 2009 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester,
Minn.
Bernie was born on March 7, 1937 in Howard County. He was
baptized and confirmed at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in
Protivin. Bernie attended Holy Trinity Catholic grade school
and graduated from Rudolphinum High school in 1956. Following
his education, he enlisted in the Army, serving his basic
training in Fort Hood, Texas and discharged at Fort Belvior,
Virginia proving grounds as a Private 1st Class. On Jan. 5,
1959, he was united in marriage to Geraldine “Geri” Martinek at
Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. Bernie worked as a
meatpacker in a butcher shop, worked for an automobile parts
factory on the production line, did farm work in the summer in
the Protivin area, and then began working in the tool and die
business at several shops. In 1983, he was a founding owner of
North East Machine and Tool, until retiring in 1998.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Waverly;
Knights of Columbus and the Waverly Country Club. Bernie
enjoyed coaching little league, gardening, fishing, hunting,
traveling, golfing and watching his grandchildren’s sporting
events. He also enjoyed volunteering his time and talents,
helping others both around Waverly and in their winter home in
Dade City, Fla. However, those most important in his life were
his wife, children and grandchildren.
Survivors are his wife, Geraldine “Geri” Kerian of Waverly;
son, Steve (Tina) Kerian of McCook Lake, S.D.; three daughters,
Ann (Curt) Teeter of Charles City, Sarah (Bernie) Benavidez of
Rochester, Minn. and Heidi (Craig) Knaak of Liberty, Mo.; 10
grandchildren, Jeffrey, David, and Matthew Kerian, Amanda, J.D.
and Brian Lund, Katelyn and Colton Benavidez and Kerian and Karl
Knaak; two great grandchildren, Paisley and Leah; sister,
Dorothy Praska of Cresco; two brothers, Richard Kerian of Las
Vegas, Nevada and Jerry Kerian (Maureen) of Winters, Calif. He
was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son and
daughter; three brothers, Stanley, Joseph and Daniel Kerian and
by a sister, Marcella in infancy.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June
30, 2009 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Waverly with Fr. Mike
Tauke presiding. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic
Cemetery in Waverly. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Monday at
the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly where there will be a
Scripture service at 7 p.m., Monday evening. Friends may also
call an hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

arrangements.

George Nehls was born in Charles City to Irving and Bertha
Nehls on Feb. 1, 1929. He departed this life on April 28,
2009 in Morro Bay, Calif. George lived his youth along the
Cedar River.
Upon his graduation from high school, he hitch hiked to
California with his buddy, and after realizing they did not
want to live their lives as prune pickers, they joined the
Army. George was stationed in Fort Bliss, Texas, then Italy,
and served in Korea during the Korean Conflict. George
returned home to Iowa and attended linotype printing school
and started working at the local newspaper. He moved to
Visalia and worked at the Visalia Times Delta for many
years. He married Annette Giefer in 1969 and joined two
families into one.
George retired in 1991 from the Times Delta and volunteered
in his wife Annette’s classroom for the next six years. In
2000, they sold their motor home. In 2005 they settled in
beautiful Morro Bay, Calif.
George is survived by his wife, Annette and eight children:
Connie (Bob) Ayers, Caroline Lovett, Cathy Howell, Bob Nehls,
Pamela (Bob) Bushnell, and Julianne (Terry) Rogers, all of
the Visalia area; his daughter, Cindy (Randy) Raper of
Mayfield, Ky. and son Christopher (Linda) Nehls of Canyon
Country, Calif.; his sisters, Jean Moore of Camarillo, Carol
Downing and Frances Scoles of Iowa; 26 grandchildren; 40
great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is
preceded in death by his son, Wesley Nehls and his brother
Robert Nehls. George will always be remembered by his
easygoing manner, great love of family, willingness to help
anyone and his alarming wit and memory. His was a member of
St. Mary’s Catholic Church, worked in religious education,
Knights of Columbus and is a Secular Franciscan. The Rosary
will be prayed on Monday, May 4 at 6 p.m. at Miller Memorial
Chapel, with a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, May 5 at
10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with a reception to
follow. Graveside services will be held 2-6 p.m. at Miller
Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests
donations be made to the Hospice Partners of the Central
Coast, 277 South Street, Suite R, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401.
