OSAGE - Jean E. Nikolas, age
77, of Osage, died Thursday, August 28, 2003, at the Mitchell
County Regional Health Center - Hospice Unit in Osage. Funeral
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 31, 2003, at
Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage. Interment will be at the
Osage Cemetery.

NASHUA -- Eugene C. Conley,
86, of Nashua passed away Sunday evening, Aug. 31, 2003, at the
11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.
Funeral mass will be Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003 at St. Michael's
Catholic Church in Nashua with burial in Our Lady of Lourdes
Cemetery at Lourdes. Visitation will be at Hugeback & Chenoweth
Funeral Homes in Nashua from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5,
2003 and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday. There will be a 4 p.m.
Rosary and a 7 p.m. Scripture Service at the Funeral home on

NEW HAMPTON -- Marjorie A.
Freese, 68, of New Hampton, formerly of Ionia, died Friday, Aug.
29, 2003 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of natural
causes.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003
at the Congregational United Church of Christ in New Hampton
with visitation to start an hour prior to the service. Burial
will in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Robert Lockhart, 90, a
resident of 701 7th Avenue, Charles City, died Monday,
September 1, 2003, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles
City.
Memorial services for Robert Lockhart will be held at a
later date. Per Robert's request his body was donated to the
Mayo Clinic.

Robert Andrew Lockhart was born May 5, 1913, at Granite
Falls, Minn., the son of Louis and Dorothy (Hurst) Lockhart.
He graduated from the Charles City High School. On October
15, 1938, he was united in marriage to Marjorie Merrick at
her parent's home in Dougherty. Bob was employed at
Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company for 39 years. He was a
member of the First Baptist Church, St. Charles Masonic
Lodge #141, Charles City Chamber of Commerce, and was past
president of the White Motor Management Club. Bob was an
outdoorsman as seen in his interest in fishing, hiking, and
gardening. He also had special interest in the Floyd County
Museum and was a great supporter for Charles City.
Living family members include his wife, Marjorie of Charles
City; three daughters, Sharon (Robert) Schmiedel of Cedar
Rapids, Lynne (Scott) Gabel of Port Aransas, Texas, and
Susan (James) Greathouse of Kissimmee, Fla.; three
grandchildren; and two sisters, Joyce Horn of Charles City,
and Margery Olson of Rapid City, S.D.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter,
Carol Jean, a grandson, Joseph Schmiedel, and two brothers,
Kenneth and Gene Lockhart.
The family suggests memorials be directed to the Charles
City Arts Center.
NASHUA - Eugene C.
Conley, 86, of Nashua, passed away Sunday evening, August
31, 2003, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in
Charles City.
A Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 6, at
St. Michael's Catholic Church in Nashua, with burial in Our
Lady of Lourdes Cemetery at Lourdes, Iowa. Visitation will

He is survived by:

Schneider of Prior Lake, Minn., and Jim Conley of Clinton
Township, Mich.; four great-nephews and two great-nieces.
Eugene was preceded in death by: his parents; three
brothers: Edward, James and John Conley; three sisters: Anna
Mae Conley, Loretta Borchardt and Irene Schneider; two
nephews: Robert Borchardt and Charles Schneider; a niece:
Becky Lybbert; one great niece: Becky Royal; and a great
nephew, Andy Semelhack.
Eugene C. Conley was born July 16, 1917, at Loudres, Iowa,
the son of John and Catherine (Fogarty) Conley. He moved to
Nashua with the family and graduated from Nashua High School
in 1935. He moved to a farm north of Nashua in 1937 and
farmed and lived there until becoming a resident at the 11th
Street Chautauqua Guest Home in January of 1998. Eugene
enjoyed playing "500" and reminiscing with old friends. He
also was actively involved with the Big 4 Fair for many
years.

ROCKFORD - Charles R.
Schulz, 87, of Glendale, Ariz., passed away on Friday,
August 15, 2003. A memorial mass will be held at Holy Name
Catholic Church in Rockford at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 6, 2003.
Charles will be laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery in
Rockford, next to his dear wife Lois, a Rockford native.

Lois Jean Saiz was
born August 23, 1934, in Nora Springs, Iowa. She was one of
five children born to Leslie and Idell (Moore) Koehler. Lois
attended school and graduated from Nora Springs High School
in 1952. On October 11, 1952, Lois was united in marriage to
Arturo Saiz in Charles City. Lois was a homemaker and
enjoyed being one very proudly. Lois was a dedicated wife
and nurturing mother, she had a great passion for reading,
especially science fiction and the Civil War era. She would
also pass the time knitting and completing works of crochet.
Her sons Art and Bob expressed that her greatest joy was
being surrounded by her family and spending time with her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of
the Cedar Valley CB Club.
Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing Lois's life
are her two sons, Art Saiz of West Des Moines; Bob Saiz of
Des Moines; two brothers, Harry (Janet) Koehler of Denver,
Iowa; James (Marie) Koehler of Nashua; six grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband,
Arturo on March 27, 1994; two brothers Bobby and Billy
Koehler.

services for Leona M. Morey, 88, of 410 North High Street,

Leona Metta
Heinmiller was born March 3, 1915, in rural Mitchell County,
a daughter of Julius John and Nina Maude (Cummings)
Heinmiller, and died Tuesday, September 2, 2003, at the
Liebe Care Center in Greene.
She received her education in the rural Mitchell and
Chickasaw county schools. On May 20, 1933 she was united in
marriage to Leonard Franklin Morey at the Presbyterian
Parsonage in Greene. To this union were born four daughters.
Leona worked for the Greene Produce for many years and later
worked as a clerk at the Diamond Brother's Grocery and later
for Shaffer's Please-U-Market both in Greene. In September
1953 Leonard and Leona took over ownership of the West Side
Grocery in Greene which she operated until 1981. Leona was a
charter member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Greene,
former member of the Greene City Council and Mayor Pro-term,
member of the Greene Historical Society, and served on the
Care Review Committee at the Liebe Care Center. She was
recipient of the "I Love Greene Award".
Leona enjoyed traveling, especially her trip to the Holy
Land with her daughter Evelyn. Upon her return she shared
her slides and told of her experiences to many groups. She
also enjoyed doing various types of hand work. Her greatest
love was for her Lord and her family.
Those thankful for having shared her life include her
daughters: Patricia Morey of Greene, Joyce (Dick) Freese of
Clarksville, Evelyn (Bill) Hay of Grand Marais, MN, her
son-in-law: Dr. R. G. Sletten of Minneapolis, ten
grandchildren: Chris (Marcia) Sletten, Elizabeth (Todd)
Sutton, Susan Sletten, Sandra Sletten, Laura (Dan)
Mortenson, Rick (Erin) Freese, Jayne Freese, Patty (Joe)
Giammarco, John (Mary) Hay, Jim (Elise) Hay; eighteen great
grandchildren; one sister: Ethel Brown of Charles City, and
two brothers-in-law: Frank Bronsema of Hollister, MO, and
Robert Cooper of Sumner, Iowa. She is also survived by many
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard on October
2, 1975, her daughter Barbara Sletten on August 12, 2000;
her parents, her sisters: Eva Clements, Alice Boerschel,
Dorothy Teeple, Ruth Cunningham, Thelma Bronsema, Pearl
Cooper, and one in infancy; her brothers: J. J. "Bud"
Heinmiller and two in infancy.

Laverne 'Butch' Meyer,
64, a resident of 3112 220th Street, Charles City, died
Friday, September 5, 2003, at his home.
Funeral services for 'Butch' Meyer will be held at 10:30
a.m. Monday (today) at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles
City. Dr. Tony Slinger will officiate. Burial will be in
Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City. The Charles
City Ceremonial Unit will conduct military honors.

service time on Monday.
Laverne Frank Meyer was born July 16, 1939, at Charles City,
the son of Arnold and Maxine (Webster) Meyer. He attended
Charles City schools and later received his G.E.D. 'Butch'
served in the United States Air Force. On May 18, 1957, he
was united in marriage to Mary Lou Exline at the Little
Brown Church in Nashua. He worked for many years at
Oliver/White Farm Equipment Corporation and was also
involved in farming. His memberships included the Farm
Bureau and V.F.W. 'Butch' had many interests including
raising beef cattle, driving his horse, raising and training
German Shorthairs, refinishing furniture, conversing with
people especially on the telephone, going to the salebarn,
and shopping at the Mennonite grocery store and eating their
"Whoopie" pies. His family meant everything to 'Butch' and
time spent with them was always extremely special.
Living family members include his wife, Mary Lou of Charles
City; two sons, Rowdy Meyer, and Kelly (Jackie) Meyer both
of Charles City; a daughter, Pam (Kurt) Roose of Bristow;
six grandchildren, Ashley, Dusty, Cody, and Cassidy Meyer,
and Kyle and Danielle Roose; mother, Maxine Meyer of Charles
City; a brother, Wayne (Beverly) Meyer of Floyd; a sister,
Cathy (Joe) Peach of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and many nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, and a grandson,
Jamie Laverne Roose.

Doris M. 'Peg' (Blough)
Houstman, 81, of Charles City, passed away Monday evening,
August 25, 2003 in the emergency room at Floyd County
Memorial Hospital in Charles City of heart related problems.
Funeral services were held Thursday, August 28, 2003, at the
Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua with burial in
Riverton Cemetery, rural Charles City. Memorials may be
directed to the Charles City YMCA, 800 Hulin Street, Charles
City, Iowa 50616.
Doris Maxine
Houstman was born January 18, 1922, at Vinton, the daughter
of William N. and Anna Mae (Dorsey) Anderson. She attended
school at LaPorte City. Doris was united in marriage to
Forrest Blough and they moved to an acreage north of Nashua.
They worked as a team doing painting and wood finishing for
homes throughout the area. Following Forrest's death in
1979, Doris continued with the business. She later moved to
Charles City and started a cleaning business. She was united
in marriage to Richard Houstman on September 9, 1989, at the
Little Brown Church in Nashua. Doris was a member of the
Charles City Moose Lodge. She will be remembered as a
talented, hard working lady.
Doris is survived by her husband, Richard Houstman of
Charles City; 2 step-daughters, Mary (Steven) Jung of Mason
City and Gloria (Dennis) Venz of Alden; three
step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Forrest
Blough on May 2, 1979; her parents; two brothers, Charles
and Estel Anderson.

Charles Edwin
Murphy was born March 25, 1916 in Missouri Valley, Iowa, the
son of Michael and Ida (Deal) Murphy. He was one of four
children. 'Mickey,' as he was affectionately known by family
and friends, grew up and attended school in Missouri Valley.
He graduated from Missouri Valley High School, class of
1933. On April 17, 1948 Charles was united in marriage to
Ruth (Suhr) Granneman in Boone, Iowa. The couple moved to
Charles City where Mickey opened and managed the first
Fareway Grocery Store in Charles City for 39 years until
retiring in 1982. He offered personalized service in
delivering groceries to th'older folks' in the area. His
family recalls that Mickey and Ruth were tremendously
devoted to one another throughout their lives. Mickey was
very well known and liked. He was a dedicated member of St.
John Evangelical Lutheran Church and the church council, the
Nashua Country Club and a charter member of the Charles City
noon Kiwanis Club. Mickey's interest and leisure activities
included spending time with his family, traveling West to
Arizona with his wife Ruth, bowling with the Fareway Grocery
Store team and was an avid golfer.
Those grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in
Mickey's life are his loving and devoted wife, Ruth; two
children, Sandra Meyers of Floyd; Wayne Graaneman and his
wife, Donna of Davenport; six grandchildren, Stephen Picken,
Lori Roach, Deborah Gasiorek, Michelle Evans, Cynthia Smith
and Jeff Meyers; eleven great-grandchildren; a brother,
David 'Andy' Murphy of Missouri Valley, Iowa. Mickey will be
sadly missed and fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews,
other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter,
Diana Ahrenholz; a sister, Muriel Hickman and a brother, Bob
Murphy.

Schmidtke, age 82, passed away Sunday, September 7, 2003 in
St. Cloud, Mn. Services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday,
September 12th at the Kline Funeral Home in Pine River,
Minn. Burial will be in the Minnesota State Veterans
Cemetery at Camp Ripley, Minn.
Leatta Schroeder was born in Charles City on December 30,
1920, the daughter of Louis F. and Marie K. (Wachsmuth)
Schroeder. She received her education in Charles City and
was a member of the Lutheran Church.
On January 21,
1942, she was married to Jay Schmidtke in Minneapolis, Minn.
They have made their home in Backus, Minn., for many years.
She is survived by her husband, Jay; her sons: Steven and
his wife, Becky, and Mark and his wife, Heather; five
grandchildren, one great-grand child and one sister, Lucile
Zielstorf; two nephews and several great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Leonard
Schroeder; and her sisters, Leona Carver and Lucinda
Hallberg, all from Charles City.

NASHUA - Gerald P.
Fisher, 87, of Nashua, passed away Monday morning, September
15, 2003, at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center in Shell Rock,
Iowa.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 18,
2003, at the United Methodist Church with burial in
Greenwood Cemetery, both in Nashua. Military Burial Rites
will be by Nashua V.F.W. Post #6792. Visitation will be
today, Wednesday, September 17, 2003, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua and one
hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
Gerald was born
April 15, 1916 at Nashua, the son of George and Katie
(Bishop) Fisher. He graduated from Nashua High School in
1933 and then from Iowa State University with a B.S. Degree
in Animal Husbandry. He entered the service on April 3, 1943
and graduated from Columbia University Midshipman School. He
served as a Lt. JG on the carrier, USS Kitty Hawk, in the
Pacific during WWII.
He returned to Nashua where he farmed until April of 2003
when he sold the last of his cattle. He also owned and
operated Cedar Valley Dairy, delivering milk to homes in
Nashua for 22 years. Gerald served on the County Board of
Supervisors for many years, where he said "he would
diligently guard the taxpayer's dollar."
Gerald was united in marriage to Harriett Carpenter on May
1, 1966 at the United Methodist Church in Nashua. They made
their home on the farm Gerald had lived on since 1946.
He was active in his community serving on boards for Farm
Bureau, Greenwood Cemetery, United Methodist Church,
Homemaker Health Aid & County Welfare, Cedar Valley Mental
Health, Community Actions and Clerk of Township Trustees.
Gerald is survived by three step-children: Winnett (Larry)
Moine of Plainfield, Winifred (Bill) Kindig of Sylvania,
Ohio and Wayne (Crystal) Carpenter of Mt. Vernon, Wash.;
four step-grandchildren: Travis Moine, Traci (Moine)
Lipkowitz, Scott Maring and Carrie (Maring) Guenther; 6 step
great-grandchildren: Chelsee Moine, Austin Lipkowitz,
Matthew and Christopher Maring, Heidi and Ryan Forrester;
two nieces: Fern Englebrecht and Lois Karn; one nephew,
Robert Farr.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet, on January 4,
1998; a step-son Winton S. Carpenter II in 1987; his
parents; one sister, Hazel Farr; one brother-in-law, Harold
Farr.

Jolene Marguerite
Kingery was born December 11, 1950, in the Floyd County
Memorial Hospital, Charles City. She was the daughter of
Maynard and Lorraine (Ewald) Kingery and died at home on
Sunday, September 14, 2003.
Jolene received her education in the Charles City Public
Schools, graduated in 1969 and attended Hamilton Business
College, Mason City. She has been employed at Hormel in
Austin, Minn. for 31 years.
As a youth she was active in 4-H and church youth
activities. She was a life long member of the First
Presbyterian Church, Greene, and attended the Westminster
Presbyterian Church, Austin, Minn. Jolene enjoyed
needlepoint and attending the activities of her nieces and
nephews. She was a fan of Elvis Presley and Country Music.
Jolene will be greatly missed by her mom and dad; sisters
Linda Keith and husband David, Rockford, Marilyn Muhle,
Solon; and her nieces and nephews who she dearly loved:
Laura and Ryan Van Roo, Janette and Nathan Friesen, Angela
Keith, Eric, Lean and Jacob Muhle.

NASHUA - Lavonne E.
Head, 71, of Nashua, passed away Wednesday morning,
September 17, 2003, at Methodist Hospital in Rochester,
Minn. following a long illness.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, September 20,
2003, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles
City with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery at Nashua. Visitation
will be today, Friday, September 19, 2003, from 4 p.m. to 8
p.m. at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua and
one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

fund is being established.
Lavonne was born
August 23, 1932 in Charles City, the daughter of Eldo and
Rena (Kalke) Kamin. Lavonne attended Riverton #9 Country
School and graduated from Charles City High School in 1950.
She was united in marriage to L. Leroy Head at St. John's
Lutheran Church in Charles City September 8, 1978. Lavonne
was a homemaker and farmer. She was a member of St. John's
Evangelical Lutheran Church, Busy Belles, Riverton
Homemakers and Women's Federated.
Lavonne did ceramics, was a great cook, loved antiques,
traveling, wintering in Arizona and riding with Leroy in
parades with their Model A.
She is survived by her husband, Leroy of Nashua; one son,
Brett Plautz and friend, Liz Powell of Oran, Mo.; two
sisters: Norma (Marian "Jack") Kamm and Verla (Robert)
Heller, all of Charles City.
Lavonne was preceded in death by her parents.

Cole, 85, formerly of 1307 D St. died Saturday, Sept. 20,
2003 at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles
City of cancer.
Services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003 at 10:30
a.m. at Sunnyside Chapel Funeral Home with burial to follow
in Sunnyside Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held Tuesday
from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to service
time.
Marie was born
March 29, 1918 at Osage to Carl and Marie Richsmann. On
Sept. 25, 1946 she was united in marriage to Wesley G.
Waterman in Charles City. He died in October, 1970 and on
Nov. 3, 1973 Marie married Wayne H. Cole. He passed away
January 23, 2000.
She had previously worked at the Osage Hospital.
Survivors include one son; Gerald Waterman of Illinois: two
daughters; Colleen Ortmayer and Janice Barrett, both of
Charles City: thirteen grandchildren and one sister; Dawn
Taylor of Charles City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, one
son, one step daughter and one sister.

Leona E.
Sylvester-Abram, 86, of 807 5th St., Charles City, died
Monday afternoon, September 22, 2003, at the Salsbury
Baptist Home, Charles City. Graveside Services will be held

Charles City, with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating.

Leona Elizabeth Abram was born January 15, 1917, in
Rockford, Iowa, to Charles E. and Esther M. (Zimmer) Steele.
She was one of seven children. On October 19, 1935, Leona
was united in marriage to Martin H. Sylvester at the Little
Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Leona had lived most all of
her life in Charles City. She was employed as a Dietary Aide
with the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City until
retiring in 1980. Leona attended St. John Evangelical
Lutheran Church and was a part of the Rachel Church Circle.
Leonaâs interest and leisure activities included tending to
her flowers, gardening, crochet, cooking and baking
delightful meals for family and friends.
Those grateful for
having had the privilege of sharing in her life are her son,
Ron Sylvester and his wife, Judy of Denver, Iowa; daughter,
Delores Griffin of Charles City; sister, Violet Corbin of
Oelwein; brother, Wallace Steele and his wife, Genevieve of
Ham Lake, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Sharon Jorgensen of Clear
Lake; eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Leona
will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by other family
and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands,
Martin Sylvester in 1965 and W.R. 'Ray' Abram in 1984; her
son Gary Sylvester; granddaughter, Sherri Cosgriff; three
brothers, Darrel, Ray and Clyde and one sister, Mina Smith.

Victor Holm, 84, a
resident of 303 9th Avenue, Charles City, died Wednesday,
Sept. 24, 2003, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in
Charles City.
Funeral services for Victor Holm will be held at 2 p.m.
Saturday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in
Charles City. Revs. Dennis Niezwaag and David Werges,
pastors, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory
Gardens, rural Charles City.

Victor Max Adolf Holm was born October 26, 1918, at Las
Vegas, New Mexico, the son of Otto and Ida (Lesche) Holm. He
graduated from St. Ansgar High School. On December 7, 1939,
he was united in marriage to Lorraine Zimmerman at St.
Ansgar. The importance of agriculture and specifically
farming was seen in Victor's occupation. He farmed near St.
Ansgar and later moved to the Charles City area where he
farmed with Julius Huxsol for many years. Victor then worked
as a custodian at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church for
six years. He was a member of Saint John Evangelical
Lutheran Church, the American Bowling Association, and
enjoyed working with the Foster Grandparent Program, and
Kid's Castle. Victor's other interests included bowling,
playing cards and pool, and watching sports, especially the
Vikings. His family was very important to him and the time
spent with them was always very special.
Living family members include five sons, Dale (Vickie) Holm
of Osage, Allen (Karen) Holm of Swaledale, Richard Holm of
Charles City, Robert (Barbara) Holm of Orchard, and Donald
(Shirley) Holm of Charles City; four daughters, Gloria
Crumpton of Manchester, Judy (Roger) Grimm of Elma, El
Louise "Jackie" (Al) Jacobs of Ellendale, Minn., and Dianna
(Tim) Francis of Mason City; twenty-three grandchildren; and
twenty-three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lorraine, on
May 23, 1995, a grandson, Brian Crumpton, a great grandson,
Alexander Branstad, a son-in-law, Jim Crumpton, three
sisters, and two brothers.
The family suggests memorials be directed to the Saint John
Christian Preschool or Saint John Evangelical Lutheran
Church.
OSAGE - Irva Lesch
Feldpouch, age 87, a resident of 535 Vermont St. in Waterloo
and of 3201 Lancer Ave. in Osage, died suddenly of natural
causes Wednesday, September 24, 2003, at her Osage home.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday,
September 30, 2003 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage.
Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

for Janet R. Duffield Bullock, 62, of 19647 110th Street,

Janet Ruth Heyenga
was born September 11, 1941, in Allison, a daughter of John
Edwin and Ruth Johanna (Barth) Heyenga, and died Saturday,
Sept. 27, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa, Mason
City.
She received her education and graduated from the Greene
High School in 1959. She was united in marriage to Donald
Francis Duffield, in July, 1960, at the Duffield family home
in Greene. They made their home in Greene where she was
employed by the United Telephone Co.
On January 5, 1974, she was united in marriage to Michael
Harry Bullock at Elk Point, S.D. They made their home on an
acreage west of Greene. Janet worked for Lois' Upholstery
for many years and also was employed by Davis Buy Low Self
Serve both in Greene. Janet and Mike were local
representatives for Diamond Vogel Paint.
Janet will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife,
mother, and grandmother, whose paramount concern was for her
family's welfare. She was a tremendous cook, who enjoyed
making and baking things for her family. She enjoyed
crocheting and ceramics. Family memories include her and
Don's love for music, and the fishing and camping trips with
Mike and the family. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic
Church and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
Living family members include her children: John (Jennifer)
Duffield of Greene, Don Duffield of Cookville, Tenn., Joe
Bullock of Anaheim, Calif., and Michael 'Buzz' Bullock of
Greene; six grandchildren: Jacob Duffield, Johanna Duffield,
Christopher Michael Bullock, Jerid Duffield, Gage Duffield,
and Kaitlyn Duffield; a sister JoAnn (Darwin) Shreve of
Marble Rock; and two aunts: Myrtle Shapley, and Leola
Ekwall, both of Greene; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husbands: Don Duffield on
November 17, 1966; and Michael Bullock on December 27, 2001;
her two daughters: Loretta Lynn Duffield on March 6, 1963,
and Teresa Ann Duffield on July 2, 1972. Those planning an

54 of Nashua passed away Friday, Sept. 26, 2003 at Ninth
Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua with burial in Sunnyside
Memory Gardens, rural Charles City. Visitation will be one
hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
Larry was born
Oct. 13, 1948 in Charles City, the son of Herbert E. and
Wilma (Weibrand) Haut. He graduated from Nashua High School
in 1966. He was united in marriage to Linda L. Sinnwell at
St. John Lutheran Church on June 4, 1967. To this union two
children were born.
Larry was a drill operator for nine years at the Oliver
Corp. in Charles City and worked for Campell's Garage for
three years before opening Larry's Repair in Nashua where he
was a mechanic for 20 years. He also served as EMT and Crew
Chief for the Chickasaw County Ambulance Service for 10
years.
He was an avid farm toy collector, Nascar collector and Bill
Elliott fan. He enjoyed his children and grandchildren and
was always ready to do a little teasing.
Larry is survived by his wife, Linda; one son: Ken (Cathy)
of Plainfield; one daughter: JoAnne (Brian) Wihlm of Osage;
five grandchildren: Jacob and Nathan Wihlm, and Taylor,
Kennedy and Tanner Haut; and one sister: Gladice Tidemanson
of Charles City.
He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Haut in
2001; his mother, Wilma (Weibrand) Haut in 1960; and one
sister, Mary Anne Haut in 1960.

C.E. "Andy" Anderson,
83, a resident of 104 Hillside Drive, Charles City, died
Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester,
Minn.
Memorial services for "Andy" Anderson will be held at 10:30
a.m. Wednesday, at Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev.
Paul Wilcox, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in
Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Clarence Elden Anderson was born January 30, 1920, in
Aryshire, the son of Andrew and Maye (Woodford) Anderson. He
graduated from Aryshire High School and from CCC Business
College in Des Moines. Andy worked for Ford Motor Company in
Des Moines until he was drafted into the United States Army
in 1942. He served two years in the United States, two years
in the European theatre, and a year in the Army of
Occupation being discharged in 1946. On October 13, 1946, he
was united in marriage to Leone Shaffer at her parents home
in Emmetsburg. To this union three children were born. After
his discharge from the Army he worked for Consolidated
Products in Des Moines, moving to Charles City he worked for
29 years at Salsbury/Solvey Laboratories, retiring as Vice
President of Sales/Marketing. He was a member of Trinity
United Methodist Church and the Elks Lodge. Andy had a love
for cars, woodworking, and yard work. He enjoyed being with
his family and time spent with them was very special.
Living family members include his wife of 57 years, Leone of
Charles City; three children, Craig (Carol) Anderson of
Omaha, Neb., DeEtte (Michael) Link of rural Ionia, and Kent
(Nancy) Anderson, of Mequon, Wisc.; five grandchildren,
Katie, Abby, Jeannette, Brandt, and David Anderson, a
brother, Raymond (Pat) Anderson of Palm Harbor, Fla.; and
many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Bradley
Anderson, and two sisters.

NEW HAMPTON --Ruth
S. Persell, 85, of New Hampton, formerly of Battle
Creek, Iowa and Bemidji, Minn., died Saturday, September
27, 2003, at the New Hampton Care Center of natural
causes.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday,
October 4, 2003, at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New
Hampton with Reverend Harvey Abrahamson officiating.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. until service time on
Saturday.
Ruth Maureen
Smith Persell was born June 29, 1918 in Sheldon, the
daughter of Christian and Noma (Potter) Smith. She
received her education from the Sheldon Community
Schools and went on to graduate from Morningside College
in 1940. On June 10, 1942, she was united in marriage to
John Sterling Persell in Springfield, Ill. Sterling died
March 2, 1989. Ruth was a music teacher in the Charter
Oak and Ute School System until retirement in 1980. She
was a very active member in the Presbyterian Church in
Battle Creek, Iowa and the Methodist Church in Bella
Vista, Ark. upon her retirement. She served as the music
director at both churches. She spent her entire adult
life giving music lessons and was involved in many
community activities. She was a member of DAR, Daughters
of the American Revolution, PEO and the Stephens
Ministry in Arkansas.
Ruth is survived by a daughter Bronlyn (Gary) Jones of
Ionia; a son John (Patty) Persell of Bemidji, Minn.; 5
grandchildren; a sister Katherine Hillman of Bella
Vista, Ark.; a sister-in-law Beaulah Robbins of Omaha,
Neb.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John
Sterling Persell, and a brother Richard T. Smith.
Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton is in charge
of the arrangements.
Dorothea Paule
Koenig, 107, of Des Moines, formerly of Charles City,
died Sunday, September 28, 2003.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at
Riverside Cemetery in Charles City with the Rev. William
Trembley officiating.
Survivors
include twin sons Gerald of Fort Myers, Florida, and
Harold of Satellite Beach, Florida; four granddaughters;
and eight great-grandchildren.
Mathilde Dorothea Paule was born November 19, 1895, in
Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Philip and Emma Paule.
Early Iowa winemakers, the family grew grapes and other
fruits along the banks of the Mississippi. After
graduation from Burlington High School in 1913 she went
on to the University of Iowa where she graduated in 1917
with a bachelor of arts degree. Her plans to teach
German were dashed by the onset of World War I, so she
turned to high school English which she taught for the
next eight years in Rock Rapids and Charles City and in
Geneva, Ill.
She married Dr. Reuben H. Koenig on July 29, 1925. The
couple settled in Charles City where Dr. Koenig
established a dental practice, which he maintained until
1981. The couple traveled extensively and, in the late
1960s, volunteered as dental missionaries serving in
Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Honduras, Nepal and New Guinea.
Dr. and Mrs. Koenig moved to Friendship Haven in Fort
Dodge, Iowa, in 1981; Dr. Koenig died in 1982. Mrs.
Koenig moved to the NBA Ramsey Home in Des Moines in
2000.
She belonged to the P.E.O. Sisterhood for 76 years and
was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in
Charles City, the United Methodist Women, the American
Association of University Women, the Fort Dodge Women's
Club and the Alpha Chi Omega sorority.

Florence Lockrem,
75, a resident of 109 Central Avenue, Charles City, died
Sunday, September 28, at her residence.
Funeral services for Florence Lockrem will be held at
10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran
Church. The Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, pastor, will
officiate. Burial will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday in Salem
Memorial Cemetery, Lake Mills.

the church on Thursday.
Florence Eileen Lockrem was born July 17, 1928, at
Joice, the daughter of Will and Tressa (Ulsted) Otto.
She graduated from the Lake Mills High School in 1945.
On September 16, 1951, she was united in marriage to
Byron Lockrem at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills.
Florence worked at the Manufactures Bank and Trust in
Lake Mills and upon moving to Charles City at the First
Security Bank. She enjoyed helping people as seen in her
volunteer work as a Pink Lady, distributing Meals on
Wheels, and ringing bells for the Salvation Army at
Christmastime.
Living family members include three children, Jeff
(Lorrie) Lockrem of Nevada, Brad (Kelly) Lockrem of
Panama City Beach, Fla., and Roberta Lockrem of Edmond,
Ok.; five grandchildren, Benjamin, Bradley, Tanner,
Madison, and Christopher Lockrem; two brothers, Harold
(Jo) Otto of Lake Mills, and Dale (Marilyn) Otto of
Texas; three sisters, Delores Muller and Dorothy Larson
both of Mason City, and Helen Groe of Lake Mills; and
many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in
1998, and a grandson, Byron Lockrem, and a brother, Carl
Otto.
NASHUA - Eugene A.
Martin, 81, of Nashua passed away Monday afternoon,
September 29, 2003, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest
Home in Charles City.
Funeral services are tentatively being planned for
Thursday, Oct. 2, at Republic Community Church, rural
Ionia, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery in Nashua.
Visitation will be at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral
Home in Nashua (641-435-4134), with times to be
announced.
