NASHUA - Eugene A. Martin,
81, of Nashua, passed away Monday afternoon, September 29, 2003,
at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 2, 2003,
at Republic Community CHurch, rural Ionia, with burial in Oak
Hill Cemetery in Nashua. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7
p.m., today, Wednesday, October 1, 2003, at Hugeback & Chenoweth
Funeral Home in Nashua, and one hour prior to services at the
church on Thursday. A memorial fund is being established in
Gene's name and memorials may be directed to the family.
Eugene A. Martin was
born November 20, 1921, in Waterloo, the son of Arthur and Carol
M. (Butler) Martin. He attended rural school in Republic and
graduated from Nashua High School in 1939. He was united in
marriage to Florence Harris at his parents home on april 5,
1942. To this union two children were born. They farmed east of
Nashua for 53 years, where Eugene also was a DeKalb Seed Corn
dealer for 25 years. They retired in 1995 and moved to their
home in Nashua.
He was a member of Republic Community Church where he served as
Sunday School Superintendent and as a Trustee. He also served as
clerk for Richland Township for many years. Gene enjoyed
fishing, sports and Shuffle Board (which he did a lot of in the
19 years they went to Texas for the winters).
He is survived by his wife, Florence; one daughter, Phyllis
(Alan) Koster of Jackson, Minn.; a brother, Wilbur Martin of
Waterloo; two step-brothers, Paul Ford of Hammond, Wis. and
Milton Ford of Sheboygan, Wis.; three step-sisters, Marjorie
Nelson of Minneapolis, Minn., Delores Larson of Colorado and
Phyllis Bolton of Portage, Miss.; two grandchildren, Scott
Koster and his fiancee, Amy Hoffman, and Tricia (Scot) Krueger;
a great grandson, Lucas Krueger.
Gene was preceded in death by a son, Dennis G. Martin, on July
3, 2003, and his parents, Arthur and Carol.

GREENE - A Funeral Mass for
Genevieve Stabenow, 98, of 115 West South Street, Greene, will
be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 2, 2003, at St. Mary's Catholic
Church, Greene with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating.
Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Greene.
Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Reid's
Funeral Chapel, 519 North First, Greene where there will be a
Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary
Service conducted by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services
on Thursday.
Genevieve Stanton was
born June 4, 1905, in rural Coldwater Township, Butler County, a
daughter of Michael and Theresa (Downing) Stanton and died
Saturday, September 27, 2003, at her home in Greene.
She received her education in the country school until the
fourth grade and then attended Sacred Heart Academy until the
eleventh grade and graduated from the Greene High School in
1923. She taught in the Butler County rural schools until her
marriage.
On February 10, 1926, she was united in marriage to William
Stabenow at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene. They moved to
the family farm where she worked side by side with her husband
until they retired to a home that Bill helped build in Greene.
Genevieve was a life long member of St. Mary's Catholic Church
in Greene, St. Jude's Circle, Catholic Daughters of the
Americas, charter member of the West Side Sewing Circle, and a
former member of the Jenny Wilder Teachers Club. She enjoyed
playing bridge and belonged to several clubs. She took great
pleasure in cooking for her family and friends. She saw to it
that you never went away hungry. She gave her family
unconditional love and was accepting of any changes in her life.
Her motto was "Peace at any Price".
Those thankful for having shared her life include her two
daughters: Evelyn Stabenow and Rita (Richard) Merfeld all of
Greene; a niece Carla (Michael) Phalen of Cedar Falls who was
raised with the family; three grandchildren: Michael Merfeld of
Greene, Theresa (Brook) Vickery of Rosemount, Minn., and David
(Lynne) Merfeld of Walla Walla, Wash.; seven great
grandchildren: Zachary, Trent, Tyler Merfeld of Greene, Rachel,
Mark, and Jenna Vickery of Rosemount, Minn., Jordan Merfeld of
Seattle, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband on January 6, 1984; her
parents, two sisters: Catherine Merfeld and Marie Gales, and one
brother: Ambrose Stanton.

NASHUA - Harold L.
Ritzman, 83, of Nashua, died Monday afternoon, September 29,
2003, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City,
of heart failure.
Services will be held Friday, October 3, 2003, at 10:30 a.m.
at Trinity United Methodist Church, Charles City, with Rev.
Paul Wilcox officiating. Military rites conducted by the
Ralph W. Nicholson V.F.W. Post 6792 of Nashua. Burial will
be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City. Visitation
will be from 4 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 2, 2003, at
Sunnyside Chapel and on Friday, 1 hours prior to service at
the church.
Harold Leaon
Ritzman, son of Vern and Flossie (Truax) Ritzman was born
September 15, 1920, in Madison Township, Butler County. Mr.
Ritzman received his education in the Dumont area. On July
14, 1941, he was united in marriage to Elsena De Vries. To
this union was born four children: Maxine Heim of Dubuque;
Judy (Harold) Bailey of Charles City; WIlliam (Nancy)
Ritzman of Charles City; and Lois (Henry) Rover of Nora
Springs.
Harold served in the Army 3 years in Pacific Area during
WWII and upon is return from service he farmed near Dumont
then Ardale, and in 1962 purchased a farm near Charles City
where they lived for 23 years. In 1985, they retired from
farming and moved to Nashua. In 1991, Harold and Elsena
celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. He was a member
of the Trinity Methodist Church and also a lifetime member
of the V.F.W. at Nashua.
He is survived by his four children, seven grandchildren,
nine great grandchildren, 1 brother, Vern Jr. of Hampton, 2
sisters, Marlis Nielson of Waverly and Audrey Stemmerman of
Allison.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife on april
24, 198 and 1 sister, Verla Penticoff.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank
family and friends for their kindness during the loss of

Oudekerk, 93, of Nashua, passed away Sunday, October 5,
2003, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles
City.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 8,
2003, at St. John Lutheran Church with burial in Oak Hill
Cemetery, both in Nashua. Visitation will be today, Tuesday,
October 7, 2003, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Hugeback &
Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to
services at the church on Wednesday. Memorials may be

She was born
October 4, 1910, at Harper, Ill., the daughter of Koert and
Alice (Dieteman) Oudekerk. She went to country school at the
Butler School west of Nashua. She worked as a housekeeper
for various businesses and at home in Nashua. She also
worked for Sherman Nursery in Charles City and Ed Poppe
Farms of Nashua.
She is survived by a son, Arthur (Arlene) Oudekerk of
Nashua; two sisters: Grace (Roy) Ahart of Burchinal, Iowa,
and Alice Bluhm of Charles City; two grandchildren: Tami
Oudekerk of Nashua and Arthur Oudekerk, Jr. of Mason City;
and one granddaughter, Brandy Sorenson of Charles City.
Henrietta was preceded in death by her parents; three
brothers: George, Harm and Koert, Jr.; and one sister, Anna
Oudekerk.
Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Homes in Nashua is in charge of

Aili Johnson, 80, a
resident of 201 South Main, Bassett, died Monday, October 6,
2003, at her home.

resident of 201 South Main, Bassett, died Monday, October 6,
2003, at her home.
Funeral services for Aili Johnson will be held at 10:30 a.m.

Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, pastor of St. John Evangelical
Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside
Cemetery, Charles City.

Aili Susan Maenpaa Johnson was born September 1, 1923, in
Stambaugh, MI, the daughter of Alex and Hilda (Maki)
Maenpaa. She graduated from Stambaugh High School. On May
31, 1947, she married Silas Johnson in Stambaugh. In 1949
they moved to the Charles City area and in the late 1980's
to Bassett. Aili worked at Ray's Pizza, was a school bus
driver, and was the club manager at the V.F.W. for many
years. Her favorite activities included quilting, gardening,
cooking, canning, and furniture refinishing. Aili treasured
her family and the time spent with them was always very
special to her.
Living family members include two sons, Michael Johnson of
TN; and Gerald (Carol) Johnson of Bassett; a daughter, Diane
Takalo of Hillsboro, OR; four grandchildren; four great
grandchildren; a sister, Elsie Plourde of Iron River, MI; a
brother Lauri Maenpaa of Florence, WI; and special family
members, Brandon Vermillion of Charles City, and Melissa and
Austin Vermillion all of Cedar Rapids.
Her parents, husband, Silas in 2002, a sister, Laura
Maenpaa, and a brother, Melvin Manepaa, preceded her in
death.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa Charles
City site or St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church.

John "Jack" Dailey, 67,
a resident of 900 10th Street, Charles City, died Wednesday,
October 8, 2003, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in
Charles City.
A funeral Mass for Jack Dailey will be held at 11:00 a.m.
Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Msgr.
Stanley Hayek will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in
Calvary Cemetery, Charles City. There will be a flag
presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.
Friends may call
at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m.
Thursday where the St. Francis Circle will recite the Rosary
at 4:30 p.m. and where there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake
Service at 7 p.m. followed by the Rosary being recited by
the Knights of Columbus. Visitation will continue at the
church an hour prior the Mass.
John "Jack" Charles Dailey was born November 13, 1935, in
Greene, the son of Bernard and Marian (Crimmings) Dailey. He
graduated from Manly High School and attended college at St.
John University and Loras College. Jack served in the United
States Army. On April 25, 1959, he was united in marriage to
Cynthia Gerhartz at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
Osage. He worked for a number of years at Jensen Brothers
Locker and then until retirement at Salsbury
Laboratories/Solvay. Jack was a member of the Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church, was 4th degree in the Knights of
Columbus, and had served as Grand Knight and as District
Deputy. Among his pastime activities were golfing, playing
cards, traveling, and gambling, with his favorite being
driving "MY PKUP". He appreciated visiting with his coffee
club friends. His family took first place in his life and
the time spent with them was always very important.
Living family members include his wife, Cynthia of Charles
City; three children, Pat (Susan) Dailey of Charles City,
Mike (Jolyn) Dailey of Johnston, and Jean (Joseph) Weber of
Brandon; 10 grandchildren, Tim, Matthew, Shannon, Ian,
Joseph, and Aaron Dailey, and Christopher, Alex, Jenna, and
Jacob Weber; a brother, Bernard Thomas (Evelyn) Dailey of
Greene; and a sister, Marlene (Ray) Brinker of Toledo, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
ROCKFORD - Samuel K.
Willman, 56 of 703 West Main Ave. Rockford, died Wednesday
morning, October 8, 2003 at the Muse Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services for Sam will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday,
October 11, 2003 at Zion Lutheran Church, 805 East Main St.
Rockford. Visitation will be held from 2-7 p.m. on Friday at
the church. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery,

ANKENY - Lisa Ann
Schlueter, 43, of Ankeny, and formerly of Atlantic, passed
away Wednesday morning, October 8, 2003, at Mercy Medical
Center in Des Moines.
Lisa was born October 31, 1959 in Atlantic, the daughter of
Ethel and Leland Rodekohr Schlueter.
She graduated from
the Atlantic High School in 1978 and attended Drake
University in Des Moines where she received her Bachelor of
Pharmacy Degree as well as her MBA.
On November 18, 1995, Lisa married Leo Mincks in Atlantic.
Besides Atlantic, Lisa had lived in Council Bluffs,
Knoxville, Des Moines, Charles City, Ames and Jewell before
moving to Bremerton, Wash. Lisa and her family moved to
Ankeny in August of 2003.
Lisa was currently a Pharmacist at Mercy Medical Center in
Des Moines.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic and of
the Iowa Pharmacists Association and the American
Pharmaceutical Association. While in Charles City, she was a
member of the Jaycees.
Lisa is survived by her husband, Leo, of Ankeny; a son,
Michael Mincks of Ankeny; her parents, Leland and Ethel
Schlueter of Atlantic; three brothers, Dennis Schlueter of
Atlantic, Lonn and his wife, Sandy Schlueter of Anita, Ross
and his wife Sherri Schlueter of Atlantic; three sisters,
Sharol and her husband Mark McCutcheon of Harlan, Gail
Schlueter and her husband, Steve Harris of Denison, Traci
Schlueter of Atlantic; father-in-law, Michael Mincks of
Webster City; mother-in-law Joan Mincks of Charles City;
sister-in-law Marie Mincks of Charles City; as well as 15
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 11, 2003, at
11 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic. Visitation
with the family will be from 6 - 8 p.m., today, October 10,
2003, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic. Burial will
take place in the Atlantic Cemetery.
DECORAH - Lyle Norman
Knoke passed away Sunday, October 5, 2003, at the age of 67
from a long illness at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital
in Decorah.
Lyle was born to Edwin and Gladys (Medberry) Knoke on
December 20, 1935, at home in Canoe Township, Winneshiek
County, Iowa. He was baptized at St. Johns Lutheran Church
at Locust and later confirmed at Burr Oak Lutheran Church.
He attended grade school in and around Burr Oak, Iowa. Lyle
graduated from Canton High School in Canton, Minn., with the
class of 1954.
On October 5,
1957, Lyle married Donna Blaess at Burr Oak Lutheran Church.
Together they had four children: Lynn, LeAnn, Marsha and
Karl.
Lyle and Donna farmed for 33 years. Most of those years were
spent farming in Canoe Township. He maintained his
membership at Burr Oak Lutheran Church where he served on
the church council, both as an officer and as a member at
large, participated in the choir and advised Luther League
for several years.
In 1989 Lyle began a career with Opportunity Homes in
Decorah as a House Manager. In 1991 Lyle and Donna moved to
their home in Decorah. Between farming and retirement and up
until 3 weeks ago, Lyle drove a school bus for North
Winneshiek and Decorah Community Schools.
Throughout his life Lyle enjoyed golfing, bowling and
traveling. Lyle filled his world with laughter, that of his
own and from those around him. He frequently stepped up to
debate political issues that entered his world, country,
state and community. But mostly, Lyle's greatest joy was
people ... neighbors, friends, both old and new, and family.
In 1991 Lyle was diagnosed with leukemia. Lyle faced both
his life and illness with courage and a strong faith in God.
October 5th marked both the beginning and the end of Lyle
and Donna's life together here on earth, as it was their
wedding anniversary.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters: Edna
Quandahl, Jean Whalen and Ruth Marilyn (Marli) Ocheskey;
three brothers-in-law: Clyde Quandahl, John Whalen and
Marvin Ocheskey; his father-in-law, Richard Blaess; one
nephew, Israel Blaess; and one great-nephew, Thomas
Quandahl.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Donna; three
daughters: Lynn (Jay) Mensink of Harmony, Minn., LeAnn
(Garry) Gulrud of Decorah, Iowa, and Marsha (James D.) Jevne
of Burr Oak, Iowa; one son: Karl (Kim) Knoke of Charles
City, Iowa; 11 grandchildren: Leah Knoke (and special
friend, Eugene Winslow) and Jay (J.J.) Mensink, Jr. of
Harmony, Minn., Tiffany (and fianc/ Weylin Smith), Michelle,
and Kari Gulrud of Decorah, James L. (and special friend
Debrah Erickson), Paul and Evan Jevne of Burr Oak, Heidi,
Holly and Matthew Knoke of Charles City; two
great-grandsons: Dominic Knoke and Garrick Smith; one
brother: Edwin Knoke, Jr. of Rochester, Minn.; his
mother-in-law, Doris Blaess of Decorah; two sisters-in-law,
Pauline (Lynn) Kerns of Mabel, Minn., and Jean Florian of
Akron, Colo.; three brothers-in-law, Richard (Phyllis)
Blaess of Burr Oak, Darold (Arlene) Blaess of Canton, Minn.,
and George (Caroline) Blaess of St. Paris, Ohio; three
special extended family members: Pat Ocheskey of Sikeston,
MO, Jean Whalen of Waterloo, Iowa, and Alverta (Bootie)
Quandahl of Decorah; his dog, Bo; and many nieces and
nephews.

Willman, 56, of 703 West Main Ave. Rockford, died early
Wednesday morning, October 8, 2003 at the Muse Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Saturday, October 11, 2003, at Zion Lutheran Church, 805
East Main St., Rockford. Interment will be in Riverside

services for Lyle Norman Knoke, 67, of Decorah, were held
Thursday, October 9, 2003, at the Burr Oak Lutheran Church
in Burr Oak, Iowa. Burial took place in Burr Oak Cemetery.
He passed away Sunday, October 5, 2003, after a long illness

Barbara Fisher, 74, of
Charles City, died Saturday, October 11, 2003, at her home.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, October 15, at
10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in
Charles City, with Monsignor Stanley Hayek officiating.
There will be no visitation. Interment will be at a later
date.
Memorials may be
directed to the immaculate Conception Catholic Church. As to
her wishes, Barbara's body was donated to the University of
Iowa.

Robert 'Bob' Micich, 83,
formerly resided at 3065 170th St, Charles City, died
Tuesday afternoon, October 14, 2003, at the Mercy Medical
Center of North Iowa, in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday,
October 18, 2003, at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt
St., Charles City. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery
in Charles City. Military Rites will be accorded by the
Charles City Ceremonial Unit. The family will greet friends
from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home,
Charles City and visitation will continue one hour prior to
services on Saturday at the funeral home. Those planning an

Robert Micich was
born October 3, 1920, in Charles City, the son of Luka and
Julia (Kovachvich) Micich. He was the sixth child of eight
children. 'Bob' as he was affectionately known by family and
friends, grew up and attended school in Charles City. Robert
honorably and faithfully served his country, a U.S. Army
veteran during World War II. In March of 1950 Robert was
united in marriage to Donna Andersen. 'Bob' was employed
with Oliver-White in Charles City as a foundry worker,
retiring with 30 years of service. Bob also enjoyed farming
on his farm in rural Charles City and attending the V.F.W.
in Charles City.
Those grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in
Bob's life are his brother, Lozo Micich and his wife, Connie
of Charles City; his sister, Dorothy Milich and her husband,
Novak of Warren, Mich.; Bob will be sadly missed and fondly
remembered by his nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Donna; two
sisters, Angela Micich and Mary Walk; his three brothers,
Bosko, George and Mike Micich.

Ted Trainer, 61, a
resident of 1826 Cedar View Drive, Charles City, died
Wednesday, October 15, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center in
Mason City from complications of a brain stem tumor.
Funeral services for Ted Trainer will be held at 1:00 p.m.
Saturday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Revs.
Dennis Niezwaag, pastor of St. John Evangelical Lutheran
Church and Pastor Paul Phillips of the Gospel Lighthouse,
will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens
rural Charles City. The Charles City Ceremonial Unit will
conduct military honors.
Friends may call
at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m.
Friday and an hour prior to the services at the church on
Saturday.
Teddy Norman Trainer was born November 28, 1941, at Charles
City, the son of Charles and Irma (Bucknell) Trainer. He
attended Charles City High School. Ted served in the United
States Army from 1959 to 1963 where he received
distinguished service awards for East German border patrol,
marksmanship and as a tank driver. On October 3, 1964, he
was united in marriage to Patricia Ready. Ted touched many
people in his life. He started work at the Ellendale Dairy,
which was family owned, and Kirsch Body Shop. He worked 17
years at White Farm where he was a machinist and supervisor.
In 1987, Diversified Manufacturing was established where Ted
worked as shop supervisor until his retirement on October 1,
2003. Ted's sharp wit, exceptional wisdom and candor will be
missed by all that knew him. He was an avid sportsman which
was displayed through his love of auto racing, fishing,
hunting, and snowmobiling. Ted's abilities with his hands
were one of a kind. He was blessed with the talents to fix
anything. However, Ted's favorite pastime was spending time
with his family and friends. He was a devoted and extremely
faithful husband, dad, and grandpa. Ted was an active member
in his church and knew Jesus as his savior. We are comforted
knowing that Ted is now walking with the Lord!
Those left to cherish the memory of his unconditional love
are his wife, Pat of Charles City; three children, Tony
(Cheryl) Trainer of Monticello, Minn., Tim (Samantha) of
Mason City, and Tracy (Jason) Thurm of Humboldt; six
grandsons, Samuel, Isaac, Gabriel, Jacob, Joseph, and
Vincent; his mother, Irma Kay of Manchester; three brothers,
Dick Trainer of Austin, Texas, Don (Nancy) Trainer of
Manchester, and Tom (Janet) Trainer of Charles City; a half
sister, Valerie Trainer of Charles City; two half brothers,
John and Joe Trainer; and many special aunts, uncles,
nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father and special uncle
John Aird.

October 16, 2003, at her home in Charles City. Funeral

Margaret Peterson,
70, a resident of 617 Floyd Street, Rudd, died Thursday,
October 16, 2003, at Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City.
Graveside services for Margaret Peterson will be held at
11:00 a.m. Monday at the West Union Cemetery in West
Union.

Margaret Ann Schroyer Peterson was born April 26, 1933,
at West Union, the daughter of Otto and Victoria (Stahl)
Schroyer. She received her education at the West Union
school. On August 11, 1951, she was united in marriage
to Earl Peterson. In 1971 they moved to Rudd where they
owned and operated the Friendly Inn until 1976. Margaret
then worked at Winnebago Industries and Minnesota
Rubber, retiring in 1995. She enjoyed going to auctions
and took special interest in watching movies and keeping
complete records of movie stars. Her family meant a
great deal to Margaret and she took great pleasure in
all of the family outings.
Living family members include three children, Joie
Peterson of Nora Springs, Cheryl (Steve) Schuster of
Rudd, and Justin (Lori) Peterson of Rudd; four
grandchildren, Jason and Mindy Schuster, and Stephanie
and Thomas Peterson; two step grandchildren, Ryan and
Rachel Evans; several great grandchildren; three
brothers, Robert Schroyer of Virginia, Gerald (Artalee)
Schroyer of Harold, SD, and Richard (Mary) Schroyer of
West Union; a sister, Nelle Marie Taylor of Arlington;
two sisters-in-law, Lillian Hansel and Linda Dodson both
of West Union; and a brother-in-law, Elwin Peterson of
West Union.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband on
June 8, 2000, two sons, Leslie Earl and Thomas L.
Peterson, a brother, George Schroyer, and her
stepmother, Joyce Schroyer.

Scholl, 76, of the Rockwell Community Nursing Home and
formerly of 309 Maple St. in Rockwell, died Thursday
evening, October 16, 2003, following a lengthy illness.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday at
Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 305 E. Elm St., Rockwell
with Rev. Craig E. Steimel officiating. Burial will be
at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery with military
graveside services provided by the Rockwell American
Legion.

Sacred Heart Catholic School Chapel in Rockwell, with a

Charlotte H. "Lottie" Gersema, 98, of 319 Iowa St.,
Marble Rock, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at the Nora
Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday,
Oct. 22 at the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock
with Pastor Kenneth Kent officiating. Burial will be in
the Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City.
Visitation
will be from 5 - 8 p.m. on Tuesday, at Reid's Funeral
Chapel in Marble Rock.
Charlotte Hattie Abben was born June 17, 1905 in rural
Ackley, Hardin County, a daughter of Derk and Gepke
(Diddens) Abben.
She was united in marriage to Wierd Gersema on Oct. 15,
1924 at Faith Lutheran Church in Charles City. Wierd and
Lottie worked together for farmers in the Greene area
until 1927 when they started farming on their own east
of Greene. They remained there for 17 years until they
moved to the Ulster Township in Floyd County where they
farmed for 30 year before retiring in 1974 and moving
into Marble Rock.
Residing in Marble Rock for the past thirty years, she
was actively involved in the Methodist Church and Senior
Citizens Club. Lottie's greatest enjoyment were her many
friends. A special treat were the neighborhood children
who visited her. Her immediate family was most precious
to her. She was greatly loved by all who knew her and
will be missed for evermore.
Those thankful for having shared her life include her
children: Ann (Lawrence) Bohlen of Collidge, Az.,
Lawrence W. (Nina) Gersema of El Paso, Texas, Dale R.
(Pat) Gersema of Lubbock, Texas; her grandchildren:
Shari Bohlen, Nila Newton, Cindi Haley, Jan Copeland,
Sandra St. Germain and David Howe; twelve great
grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and one
sister: Effie Abben of Waterloo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wierd
Gerseman, on Nov. 22, 1995, two grandsons: Kenneth D.
Gersema and Douglas R. Gersema; her parents, five
brothers: Dick, Ed, Ralph, Ben and Gephard; and five
sisters: Hattie, Geraldine, Minnie, Johanna and Kathryn.

Rachel Marie Fisher was born August 6, 1981, at Mora,
Minn., the daughter of Dale and Tammy (Larson) Fisher.
She received her education at Charles City. Rachel was
currently working at Chaffs Restaurant in New Hampton.
She was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran
Church. One of her favorite pastimes was spending time
with her friends. Rachel's "life" was her daughter and
their time together was always most important.
Living family members include her daughter, Destiney
Fisher of Charles City; her mother, Tammy Larson, and
father, Dale Fisher both of Charles City; three
brothers, Nathan, Charles and Ryan Fisher all of Charles
City; a sister, Elizabeth Fisher of Charles City;
maternal grandmother, Rita Adams and step grandfather,
Joe Adams of Danbury, Wisc.; paternal grandmother, Mary
Ann Fisher of Ionia; and two nieces, Tatum Fisher and
Angel Herman.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather,
John Larson, paternal grandfather, Charles Fisher, and

88, formerly resided at 2521 Timber Ave., Charles City,
died Monday afternoon, October 20, 2003, at the 9th
Street Chautauqua Guest Home, in Charles City.

at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel

Marie
Katherine Kay was born May 8, 1915, in rural Greene,
Iowa, the daughter of Mathias and Katherine (Kohlhaas)
Frascht. Marie was united in marriage to Clarence Kay on
December 31, 1937. Clarence and Marie worked together as
farmers in the Charles City area. In 1956, they resided
and farmed at the Carrie Lane Chatman Katt house south
of Charles City. Later the couple moved two miles South
on Timber Ave. where they continued to farm and later
retired. Marie was a wonderful housekeeper and cook.
Marie was a devout member of the Immaculate Conception
Catholic Church, the Moose Lodge and the auxiliary
circle. Marie was fun loving and enjoyed entertaining in
her home. Playing cards, cooking, gardening and
embroidering were her pastimes. Marie's grandson Philip
was most precious to her. She will be most remembered
for her sense of humor and her devotion to her family.
She is survived by her son, Duane Kay and his wife,
JoAnn of Charles City; her sister, Ellen Schrage of St.
Ansgar; her grandson, Philip Kay of Waterloo. Marie will
be sadly missed and fondly remembered by many nieces,
nephews, other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Kay
in September of 1999; a daughter, Cheryl Ann Kay on
October 13, 1945; her parents and five brothers,
Bernard, Leo, Joseph, Louis and Burt Frascht.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -
Francis E. 'Gib' Gibbons, 78, formerly of Charles City,
passed away in Sacramento on October 12, 2003. The
beloved husband of the late Phyllis Gibbons, he is
survived by a sister, Jean Eastin, and a number of
nephews and a niece.
Gib was a WWII U.S. Army veteran serving in the European
theater in the 89th mortar Bn., where he received a
bronze star for bravery. he was a Past Commander of VFW
Post 3914 in Charles City, and a long-time member of
Carmichael Elks Lodge #2103. He retired from Blake,
Moffet and Towne with over 20 years of service receiving
numerous outstanding salesperson awards. He was a member
of St. Philomene Parish. A native of Iowa, his family
owned and operated Gibbons Ladies Clothing Store in
Charles City while he was growing up.
A Mass of
Christian Burial was held October 16, 2003, at the
chapel at Calvary Cemetery, 7101 Verner Ave.,
Sacramento, with interment following. Lombard & Company

MT. DORA, Fla. -
Sally Valeske, age 96, passed away on October 2, 2003,
at Watermen Village, Mt. Dora, Florida.
She was born July 21, 1907 in Charles City, Iowa and
went to local schools. After business school she worked
in Los Angeles. San Francisco, Chicago and New York. She
retired to Mt. Dora to be with her sister Laura Sargent.
She was
preceded in death by one brother Carl Valeske, three
sisters, Amelia Valeske, Erna Schilling and Laura
Sargent. She is survived by four nieces and numerous
great nieces and nephews.

86, of Charles City, died Sunday, October 26, 2003 at

Lavernus V. Vandeventer was born January 10, 1917 in
Charles City, the daughter of Ernest and Grace (Naber)
Vandeventer. She attended Charles City schools, and on
March 23, 1935 she was united in marriage to Ivan L.
Friend in Osage. Lavernus loved playing cards and
fishing, and sewing clothes for dolls was also a
favorite hobby.
Lavernus is
survived and lovingly remembered by her son Gerald
Friend and his wife Elynor of Charles City; four
grandchildren: Gail Fast and her husband Duane, Michael
Friend, Matthew Friend and his wife Louan, and Patrick
Friend. She is also survived by fourteen great
grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and a
brother Raymond Vandeventer and his wife Ella, as well
as many nieces and nephews.
Lavernus was preceded in death by her husband, her
parents, an infant daughter, four sisters, and four
brothers.
Edith North, 97, a
resident of 305 B. Street, Charles City, died Sunday,
Oct. 26, 2003, at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest

William "Bill" Quinlan, 95, of Forest City, formerly of
216 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs, died Sunday, October
26, 2003 at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

October 29 at Sheckler Colonial Chapel 114 North
Hawkeye, Nora Springs with Rev. Robert Snitzer of the

Lillian L. Glock, of Nora Springs, formerly of Rudd,
passed away on Friday, October 24, 2003 at the Nora
Springs Care Center after living her life to the fullest
for 103 years.
A service celebrating her life will be held at 11:00
a.m. on Monday, Oct. 27, 2003 at the Rudd United
Methodist Church, 611 6th Street, with Reverend Jim
Turner officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside
Cemetery, Rockford. Visitation will be held from 10:00
a.m. until the time of the service at the church on
Monday. Lillian was born October 11, 1900 in Rudd, a
daughter of Earnest and Lina (Hintzman) Schuster. She
grew up in the Rudd area, graduating from Rudd High
School in 1920. Lillian was united in marriage to John
F. Glock on July 3, 1922. They were lifelong farmers
near the Rudd area. Lillian also worked for Farmer's
Mutual Telephone Company as an operator for 12 years.
She was a member of the Rudd United Methodist Church and
the church circle. She also was a 50 year member of the
Rudd American Legion Auxiliary and president for 12
years of the "Jolly Rudders." Lillian enjoyed knitting,
crocheting, sewing, flowers, gardening, and music of all
kinds, playing the piano for many years.
Lillian will
be greatly missed by her many nieces, nephews,
great-nieces, great-nephews, and other relatives and
friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband,
John in 1969, and all of her siblings.

Howard Begeman, 81,
a former resident of 1719 Rotary Park Road, Charles
City, died Monday, October 27, 2003, at the 9th Street
Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.
Funeral services for Howard Begeman will be held at
10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home in
Charles City. The Rev. Paul Wilcox, pastor at Trinity
United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be

Howard George Begeman was born July 19, 1922, at Charles
City, the son of Theodore and Irene (Smith) Begeman. He
received his education at Charles City. Howard farmed in
the Charles City area all of his life. His interest in
electronics was evident as he owned and operated Begeman
TV for forty years. He was a member of Trinity United
Methodist Church.
Living family members include a sister, Donna (Thomas)
Oliver of Charles City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Irene Begeman
Caruth and Theodore Begeman.
Terence "Terry"
Tobin, 72, a resident of 102 15th Avenue, Charles City,
died Monday, October 27, 2003, at his residence.
A funeral Mass for Terry Tobin will be held at 11:00
a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church
in Charles City. The Rev. Carl Ries, pastor, will
celebrate the Mass. Burial will be at a later date in
Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

4:30 p.m. and the Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be
at 7 p.m. followed by the Rosary being recited by the

Terence Thomas Tobin was born July 21, 1931, at Charles
City, the son of Chester and Gertrude (Short) Tobin. He
received his education at the Immaculate Conception
School. Terry served in the United States Army from 1949
to 1952 and received the Medal of Honor and Bronze Star
with cluster. On June 15, 1953, he was united in
marriage to Virginia Sovereign at the Holy Name Catholic
Church at Rockford. He was a member of the Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus in which
he held the third degree, Floyd County Archery Club
where he had served as president, American Legion, and
was a life long member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Terry's interests included bow hunting, fishing, playing
cards and pool, cooking, gardening, riding bicycle, and
mushroom hunting. He also looked forward to having
coffee with his friends each morning. Terry's family was
special to him and he looked forward to spending time
with them.
Living family members include his wife, Virginia of
Charles City; four children, Thomas (Andrea) Tobin of
Knoxville, Joseph (Wanda) Tobin and Patrick (Ruth) Tobin
both of Houston, Texas, and David (Lynn) Tobin of
Prairie Du Chien, Wisc.; seven grandchildren, Jessica
Jackson, Adam Tobin, Heather Tobin, Michele Nielsen, Amy
Tobin, Angie Tobin, and Debora Tobin; two step
grandchildren, Lee and Jennifer Woodworth; three great
grandchildren; three brothers, Dick (Shirley) Tobin and
Charles (JoAnn) Tobin both of Floyd, and Larry (Jean)
Tobin of Bertha, Minn.; and two sisters, Sharon (Jim)
Weigel of Charles City, and Cathie (Eldon) Randall of
Marble Rock.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Mary
Ann Tobin in 1958, a grandson, Daniel Lee Tobin in 1996,
and two brothers, James and Roger Tobin.
Margaret B. Smith,
83, of 805 Freeman St., Charles City, died early Tuesday
morning, October 28, 2003, in the care of Hospice at the
Floyd County Memorial Hospital, in Charles City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at
St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St. in
Charles City, with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating.
Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Rockford. The
family will greet friends from 3 to 7 p.m. with a prayer
service at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral
Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City and visitation will
continue one hour prior to services on Friday at the
church.

to St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City.
Margaret B. Smith was born November 25, 1919, in rural
Rockford, Iowa, the daughter of Clark and Lettie
(Krambeer) Bell. She attended country school, graduating
from Charles City High School, class of 1937. She had
taught school for three years in the rural school
district. Margaret was united in marriage to Dayle R.
Smith on August 11, 1939, in Elkader, Iowa. Margaret's
interest included raising hogs for several years on
their farm near Colwell and tending to her beautiful
flower and vegetable gardens. She enjoyed playing cards,
making crafts and attending many school activities that
her grandchildren participated in through the years.
Margaret was a life-long member of St. John Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Charles City, of which she also
belonged to the Ruth Circle, the Help-A-Neighbor Club,
Colwell Thursday Culture Club, and the Birthday
Card-Players Club. Margaret's greatest joy in life was
being blessed with all of her grandchildren, the many
friendships she made and kept throughout her lifetime
and the enduring love she shared with her husband for 64
years. Dayle and Margaret were avid travelers and
attempted to visit each state within the U.S. throughout
their lives. She will be sadly missed and fondly
remembered by all.
Those grateful for having had the privilege of sharing
in her life are her husband Dayle; two sons, Steve
(Karolyn) of Cedar Rapids and Mike (Barb) of Charles
City; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and
her sister, Shirley Nehls of Mason City. She is also
survived by one brother-in-law, two sisters-in-law and
several nieces and nephews. Margaret looked forward to
the birth of two more great grandchildren to be born
soon.
Preceding Margaret in death were her parents, two
sisters, Phyllis Peterson and Gertrude Smith and one
brother, Harold Bell.
Edith North, 96, a
resident of 305 B Street Charles City, died Sunday,
October 26, 2003, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest
Home in Charles City.
Funeral services for Edith North will be held at 1:30
p.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles
City. Pastor Gayle Wilcox of Trinity United Methodist
Church will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside
Cemetery, Charles City.
Friends may
call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m.
Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until service time on
Thursday.
Edith Lavada Lambkin North was born February 21, 1907,
at Paw Paw, Ill., the daughter of Chester and Lillian
(Woods) Lambkin. Her family moved to Iowa in 1915 and
then to Charles City in 1917. Edith graduated from the
Charles City High School in 1925. On August 6, 1929, she
was united in marriage to George Frank North at
Clarksville. George North died on September 9, 1961.
Edith worked for a number of years for Guthart Brothers
and then for First Security Bank and Trust Company until
her retirement in 1972. On October 29, 1973, she married
Lewis Rawn. Lewis died on March 4, 1988. Edith was a
member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the
Pythian Sisters. She enjoyed crafts, flower and
vegetable gardening, dancing, and going for rides in the
country.
Living family members include four children, Dr. George
(Lois) North of Allison, Lucile (Charles) Cline of
Austin, Minn., Robert (Judy) North of Vinton, and Keith
(Linda) North of Arlington Heights, Ill.; a step son,
David (Cheryl) Rawn, of Lyle , Minn.; a step
daughter-in-law, Sherry Rawn of Osage; 10 grandchildren;
28 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren.
Her parents, husbands, and two brothers preceded her in
death.
NORA SPRINGS -
William "Bill" Quinlan, 95, of Forest City, formerly of
216 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs, died Sunday, October
26, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday,
October 29, at Sheckler Colonial Chapel 114 North
Hawkeye, Nora Springs with Rev. Robert Snitzer of the
Calvary Lutheran Church in Crystal Lake. Burial will be
at Park Cemetery, Nora Springs. Visitation will be held
Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with the family
present from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral
home.
William Richard Quinlan was born November 10, 1907, to
Jesse and Anna (Johnson) Quinlan at Minot, N.D. At an
early age, the family moved to Jefferson, Iowa. William
received his education in the Jefferson school system.
He attended Iowa State University and received his
certification as a buttermaker. He worked in creameries
at Jefferson, Colwell, Cresco, and Nora Springs for 42
years.
On October 12,
1935, he was united in marriage to Mildred Zimmerman at
Waverly, Iowa. After the loss of two daughters, another
daughter, Marian, was born in 1945.
After retirement, he drove school bus and spent time
helping others who were less able. He continued raising
bees which was a lifelong hobby and later a small family
business. Many people came to the house to purchase
honey, some as far away as New York and California.
Mildred entered the Lake Mills Care Center in 1996 and
in 1997 William joined her there. In January of 2001 he
transferred to the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City,
Iowa. He received excellent care in both places. His
sense of humor helped him to make many friends of both
residents and staff.
He was an avid baseball fan, enjoyed gardening, pitching
horseshoes, and visiting with family and friends. He
enjoyed the Sporting News and throughout his entire life
read hometown newspapers for news of friends and current
events.
William was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist
Church at Jefferson and was a member of the United
Methodist Church at Nora Springs. He was a 50-year
member of the Masonic Morning Star Lodge No. 159, A.F. &
A.M. of Jefferson, Iowa.
William is survived by his daughter and son-in-law,
Danny and Marian Lenz, of Forest City, and numerous
nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his
parents, his wife, Mildred, in 1997, and two infant
daughters. Also, all the "in-laws" preceded him:
parents, Ross and Nellie Zimmerman and Katheryn Meyer
Zimmerman; and brothers and sisters, Farold and Bertha
Zimmerman and Marie Boggess Zimmerman, Mabel and Erich
Mannetter, Maynard and Francis Zimmerman, Neva and
Walter Schwyhart, and Virgil "Bud" and Ilda Zimmerman.
ORCHARD - Howard D.
Lovik, 76, of rural Orchard, died Monday, October 27,
2003, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday,
October 30, 2003, at St. John's Lutheran Church south of
Osage. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in
Floyd with military graveside services by Orchard
American Legion Post 641.
