On Sept. 10, 1946 he married Helen Pearson at Concordia
Lutheran Church of Burlington. He then enrolled in the Lutheran
Church Missouri Synod Seminary in St. Louis, Mo. Part of his
training at the seminary involved congregational service, and
the service he chose was coaching. He took a basketball team of
inner city boys to a national championship game and started

Louis. He earned his M.A. from Washington University and pursued

Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and the Luther College
Athletic Hall of Fame. His record as football coach of 150 wins,
79 losses and six ties makes him one of the winningest coaches
in Division III football.
During his tenure as Athletic Director at Luther College, the
strong program for women's athletics came into its own.
From his teaching experience he saw the need for a book on
sex education. His book, 'The Christian Parent Teaches About
Sex,' was published by Augsburg Publishing House in 1966.
As a frequent speaker for church banquets, athletic banquets
and graduation exercises, he traveled extensively through the
Midwest. His inspiring enthusiasm and favorite stories were
