John's United Church of Christ -

of the Bartels Lutheran Home
officiating. Organist for the service
will be Mary Jo Stille with Judy Laube
and Sylvia Schafer as vocalists singing
"Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou
Art". Burial will be in the Pleasant
Hill Cemetery with grandsons Rob Vranek,

Jordan, Martin Jordan and James
Nowakowski as casket bearers.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on
Thursday, July 31, 2003, at the Hugeback
& Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua, with
further visitation one hour prior to the
service at the church. On-line memorial
condolences may be left for Cora at
www.hugebackfuneralhome.com.
Cora was born
June 30, 1904, at Horton, the only child
of Wesley and Emma (Coffin) Strawser.
She was baptized at the Horton Baptist
Church and raised on the Strawser farm.
Cora attended the Horton grade school
and graduated from the Plainfield High
School. She obtained her teaching
certificate from Iowa State Teacher's
College, Cedar Falls. She taught in
rural elementary area schools. She met
her husband (Ernest Wagner) when
teaching at Riverton #5 Country School
and "boarding" at the Wagner farm. They
were married June 2, 1929, in
Marshalltown. As a new bride she moved
to the Wagner farm S.W. of Nashua where
she and Ernest made their home and
raised their four children. Ernest died
in 1960 and Cora continued to live on
the farm until failing health
necessitated her move to Bartels
Lutheran Home - Waverly in February of
1995. Although she felt a lifelong
connection to the Horton Baptist Church,
she was an active participant at St.
John's United Church of Christ, Pleasant
Hill. In 1929, the congregation was
primarily of German heritage and she
taught the first English speaking Sunday
School Class.
Cora was always busy at her sewing
machine. She pieced hundreds of
comforters and lap robes which she
donated to nursing home residents or
families in need. For years she supplied
hand crafted items and Barbie doll
clothes to her favorite Children's
Hospital in Everett, Washington.
Cora is survived by her son Donald
Wagner of Yakima, Wash.; three
daughters: Darlene Vranek (Robert),
Glendale, Wis., Marlys Sturm of North
Mankato, Minn., Marcia Jordan of
Centenial, Col.; 13 grandchildren and 18
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by her parents and her husband,
Ernest Wagner.
