Alvin Brane
October 10, 2006
Alvin Braner, 85, of Belmond, died on Wednesday, October 4,
2006.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 7, at
the Immanuel Reformed Church east of Belmond, with Pastor
Rob Ford officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Alvin Merle, was born on
October 17, 1920 in Belmond, the son of Wessel and Magdalene
(Mennenga) Braner. He attended country school through eighth
grade and graduated from the Belmond High School. He served
in the Navy V-5 Air Corps program.
He worked with his father
on the family farm until his father retired in 1952, and
then Alvin continued farming. In 1952 he married Crystal
Thompson. They lived on the farm for 45 years until moving
into Belmond.
Alvin was a life long
member of Immanuel Reformed, where he was baptized. He
served as deacon and elder. He loved singing in the choir
and helped with crafts at Bible School.
Alvin played league
softball in his younger days. He sponsored and played on a
league volleyball team until he was 69. He was known for the
whole wheat bread he made, winning blue ribbons at several
fairs. He volunteered at the Lyric Theatre and for Meals On
Wheels.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; and a sister, Velma Hauge.
Alvin is survived by his
wife; sons, Kevin (Andrea) and Scott (Kathy); grandchildren,
Aubrey Stadtlander, Alyssa, Anna and Alex Braner; sister,
Phyllis Cullinan; and brothers-in-law, Dale Hauge and
Sterling Thompson.

Richard Stadtlander
October 10, 2006
Richard Stadtlander, 57, of Belmond, died on Thursday,
October 5, 2006.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday,
October 10, at the Belmond United Methodist Church, with
Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Burial was in the Belmond
Cemetery.
Richard Jerry, the son of
Alfred C. and LaVonne (Mason) Stadtlander, was born on April
15, 1949 in Belmond. While attending the Belmond High
School, Rich played football all four years and never lost a
game. He was the quarterback his senior year. He graduated
in 1967. After high school Rich attended the Mason City
Junior College and Upper Iowa University, where he also
played football.
After college Rich began
working for Frank Pollitt at Super America and doing
construction. He later drove a delivery truck. Then Rich
started working for Iowa Electric (IES Utilities, Alliant
Energy) as a gas technician. He married Carolyn McLaughlin
in 1975.
Rich enjoyed riding his
motorcycle and was a collector of old cars and tractors. He
was known as "Uncle Buck" to his nieces and nephews, and he
cherished time spent with family and friends. Rich was a
Hawkeye fan, and enjoyed traveling, camping and fishing. He
volunteered many hours to Belmond Trees Forever and the
Belmond Area Arts Council.
He was preceded in death
by his parents.
Rich is survived brothers
and sisters, Tom (Karen) of Belmond, Larry (Pat) of Oak
Harbor, Washington, Robert (Judie) of Iowa City, Janet
(Denny) Hennigar of Clarion, Jerry (Phyllis) of Waukee and
Marilyn (John) TerHark of Independence; fourteen nieces and
nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

Les
Classick
October 10, 2006
Leslie G. Classick, died of heart failure on Friday, October
6, 2006, at his home in Logan, Utah. The body was cremated
and inurnment will be in the Louisville, Colorado cemetery.
Les was born on April 17,
1928, in Hurley, South Dakota, the son of Harold John and
Jenny Classick. The family moved to Belmond when Les was in
high school, and he graduated with the class of 1946.
He received a B.A. from
the University of Northern Iowa in 1950, a Doctor of
Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 1958, and
a post-doctorate degree in veterinary microbiology and
preventative medicine from Iowa State University in 1971. He
taught high school biology and science, he was a
veterinarian in Belmond, was a research veterinarian at the
National Animal Disease Center in Ames, was an assistant
professor at Iowa State University, was an industrial
veterinarian in research, and worked as a veterinary
consultant. He was a member of five honorary fraternities in
the fields of education, biological science, agriculture,
veterinary medicine, and all college.
He married Charlotte Marie
Christiansen on August 20, 1950. She died in 1985. He
married Dottie Jean Colby on June 30, 1988.
Les was a member of the
Congregational Church. He was a veteran of the Korean War
and served as an instructor at the quartermaster school at
Ft. Lee, Virginia. He was very active in sports as a young
man and enjoyed watching his sons and grandchildren in his
later years. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; and a brother, Harold.
He is survived by his wife
Dottie; sons, Nic of Parker, Colorado, Harold and Craig of
Arvada, Colorado and Charles of Springfield, Missouri; and
nine grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to
the Belmond-Klemme Scholarship Fund, 411 10th Avenue NE, or
the Belmond Fire Department, 112 Second Ave NE.

Louis Dirksen
October 24, 2006
Louis Dirksen, 95, formerly of rural Alexander and Belmond,
died on Wednesday, October 18, 2006, at the New Hampton
Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where he lived the past
five years.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 21, at the
First Reformed Church in Alexander, with Rev. Phillip Arnold
officiating. Burial was in the Alexander Cemetery.
Louis, the son of Dirk and
Yettie (Pals) Dirksen, was born on March 27, 1911, on a farm
near Alexander. He attended rural schools until assisting
his parents with their farming operation. On December 15,
1938 he married Marie Kuhlers.
The couple farmed together
in rural Alexander. Louis was very meticulous and
hardworking. He taught his family and grandsons the
importance of weed-free fields and taking pride in one's
work. Louis raised livestock, including black and white beef
cattle. He received a champion award from the Franklin
County Fair in the fat steer division in 1957. He also won a
competition in Hampton for handpicking corn. Louis also took
great pride in his work horses. He was never afraid of
progress, and it wasn't uncommon for him to invent equipment
to help ease the chores.
In 1979, they moved into
Belmond, but it was not unusual to find Louis on the farm.
Many of the buildings on the Century Farm were built with
his hands and the hands of his other Dirksen relatives.
After Louis and Marie moved into town they enjoyed the 60's
Club activities where Louis played pool and cards.
Louis was a dedicated
member of the First Reformed Church where he was served on
the consistory, as a deacon, as an elder, and as Sunday
School Superintendent. He loved family gatherings, a good
conversation, and was always there to lend a hand if needed.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; his wife in 1999; son, Robert in 1987;
brother Jelto; and sisters, Grace Modderman and Clara
Lauritzen.
Survivors include his
daughter, Karen (LeRoy) Bobst of New Hampton; brother, Dirk
(Grace) Dirksen of Alexander; sister, Jennie DeWaard of
Kanawha; grandsons, Jeff (Twyla) Bobst of Waverly and their
children, Jessica, Dana, Erin and Kari and Justin (Lonna)
Bobst and their children, Jeremie and Lea Bobst,

Catherine Barkema
October 24, 2006
Catherine B. Barkema, 71, of Goodell, died on Thursday,
October 19, 2006, following a 3-year battle with leukemia.
Funeral services were held on Monday, October 23, at the
Goodell United Methodist Church, with Pastor Paddy Druhl
officiating. Burial was in the Amsterdam Cemetery near
Goodell.
Catherine Belle, the
daughter of Paul and Ina Mae (Burgess) Halfpop, was born on
February 16, 1935, on the family farm in Avery Township and
continued to live her entire life in the Goodell area. She
graduated from the Goodell High School in 1952.
On September 26, 1953, she
married Dick Barkema Jr. at the EUB Church in Goodell. She
helped Dick with the farm until retirement, at which time
they enjoyed spending summers in Walker, Minnesota and
winters in Apache Junction, Arizona. Catherine attended the
United Methodist Church in Goodell.
Catherine was a skilled
porcelain artist and a member of the Iowa and World China
Painters Guild. She enjoyed sewing anything from a
complicated hardanger piece to Halloween costumes for her
grandchildren and cooking.
Two of her favorite joys
were her grandchildren and shopping. She loved the holidays
and having all of her family around her. Catherine loved the
outdoors and would take any opportunity to go for a walk in
the woods, whether it was mushroom hunting, gathering nuts,
fishing in the river, or picking a bouquet of flowers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; grandchildren,
Megan and Marissa Barkema; and a sister-in-law, Harriet
Halfpop.
Survivors include her
husband; children, Barbara Schaefer of Goodell, Keith
(Sharon) of Klemme, Mark (Nancy) of Goodell and Dick A.
(Tammy) of Klemme; grandchildren, Lisa Schaefer, Tim
Barkema, Mindy (Chad) Seifried, Marcus, Michelle, Amanda,
Cassandra and Taylor Barkema; and a brother, Bernard Halfpop
of Fairmont, Minnesota.

Ileen Ruth Wolters
October 24, 2006
Ileen Ruth Wolters, 70, of Ames, died on Thursday, October
19, 2006, at the Israel Family Hospice House.
Funeral services were held on the morning of Monday, October
23, at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames, with Rev. Randy
Gehring officiating. Burial was that afternoon in the
Meservey Cemetery.
Ileen
Ruth, was born on October 14, 1936 in Belmond, the daughter
of Harlan and Pearl (Johnson) Johnson. She lived in
Sheffield and Mason City. She married Larry Wolters on June
25, 1961 in Sheffield, and they lived in Ames.
Ileen Ruth was a member of
the Bethesda Lutheran, the Ames Breakfast Lions, helped with
the Scandinavian Coffee, and served on the Friendship
Committee. She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, her
children and grandchildren.
Survivors include her
husband; sons, Jeff (Ann) of New Jersey and Kevin (Cindy) of
Oklahoma; brother, Harley Johnson; and grandchildren,
Jacquelyn, Katelyn, Emily, Bryce and Blake.

Wilbur Sebert
October 24, 2006
Wilbur Eugene Sebert, 82, died on Saturday, October 21,
2006, at the USA Health Care Center in Clarion.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 25, at the
Presbyterian Church in Clarion, with burial in the Evergreen
Cemetery in Clarion.
Wilbur, was born on
October 6, 1924 in Clarion, to Frank and Blanche (Whipple) Sebert. He attended school at Grant Township #3 and
graduated form the Clarion High School in 1941.
He married Ila Mae
Bisgrove on June 7, 1942, at the Epworth Methodist Church in
Fort Dodge. They raised their family near Lake Cornelia on a
century farm which he worked for 44 years.
Wilbur was an avid
sportsman and game player. He enjoyed spending time with his
children, grandchildren and friends.
He was a member of the
United Presbyterian Church, Clarmond Country Club, and
Clarion Lions, was a Grant Township Trustee, and was a field
measurer for the United States Department of
Agriculture/ASCS of Wright County.
Wilbur is survived by his
children, Roger (Carlene) Sebert of Visalia, California,
Judy (Everett) Lettow of Ellsworth, Iowa, Audrey (Steve)
Quick of Topeka, Kansas and Rodney (Leann) Sebert of
Belmond; grandchildren, Shawn (DeeDee) Sebert, Jason Lettow,
Jami Lettow, Ryan Sebert, Stephanie (Danny) Timblin, Amanda
Sebert, Jeff (Sara) Quick, Whitney Sebert, Ethan Sebert and
Nolan Sebert; great-grandchildren, Samuel Sebert, Emma
Sebert, Jackson Sebert and Benjamin Timblin; brother,
Richard (Jane) Sebert of Hillsboro, Indiana; sister-in-law,
Phyllis Woodley of Clarion; and brother-in-law, Cleo (Wyladene)
Bisgrove of Clarion.

Theresa McAloon
November 7, 2006
Theresa "Tres" McAloon, 75, of Garner, died on Saturday,
October 28, 2006, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
Memorial services were held on Thursday, November 2, at
the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner, with Father
Michael Schueller officiating. Inurnment was in the St. Boniface Cemetery, Garner.
Theresa Haus, was born on July 2, 1931 in North Washington,
Iowa to Edward and Thelma (Bach) Haus. She graduated from
the St. Mary's High School in North Washington.
On August 3, 1953, Theresa
married Harry McAloon in Des Moines. Theresa was a member of
the Catholic Daughters of America. She retired from the
Hancock County Abstract Company in 2004, after 30 years of
service. Tres enjoyed gathering with family and friends to
play cards and Bingo. Her flower garden brought pleasure to
her as the seasons changed. The very essence of Theresa's
life was love, she lived and breathed for her children,
grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by her husband in 2000; her parents; son, Michael; and a
sister, Annette Rapp.
Survivors include her children, Mark McAloon of Mason City,
Martin (Kay) McAloon of Garner and Michelle (Dennis) Lau of
Winner, South Dakota; grandchildren, Bobbi Breitkreutz,
Danielle Breitkreutz, Shannon (Greg) Allen, September Lau,
Summer (Jeff) Swenson, Dustin (Amanda) Lau, Dane Lau, Derek
Lau, David Lau, Devin Lau, Samantha Lau, Stephanie Lau,
Shawnessey Lau, Shelby Lau and Sydney Lau;
great-grandchildren, Piper Breitkreutz, Isaac Swenson,
Cecilia and Emma Lau; brother, Dan (Mary) Haus; and sister,
Mary (Clari) Randall.

Arlene Kramer
October 31, 2006
Arlene Kramer, 87, of Garner, died on Saturday, October 28,
2006, at the Belmond Medical Center.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday morning, November 1,
at the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner, with
Rev. Tim Diehl officiating. Burial was in the Concord
Township Cemetery in Garner.
Music was provided by
organist, Margaret Jass who accompanied soloist, Angi
Smith. Casket bearers were Tim Smith, Todd Smith, Troy
Smith, Chris Smith, Dan Kramer, Mike Smith, Taran Allison
and Tad White.
Arlene Elizabeth, the
daughter of Emil and Emma (Grell) Kraus, was born on
December 4, 1918 at Klemme. She graduated from the Klemme
High School as class valedictorian.
On September 26, 1937, she married Art Kramer at the Little
Brown Church in Nashua. They lived in Garner. Art died in
1968. In 1999 she moved to the Rise Apartments in Belmond
and in May 2006 to the Belmond Health Care Center.
She enjoyed spending time
with her grandchildren, baking cinnamon rolls and visiting
with people. Arlene will be remembered for her positive
attitude in life. She was a member of the Zion Evangelical
and Reformed Church and the women's fellowship.
She was preceded in death by her husband; and her parents.
Arlene is survived by her
children, Jack (Judy) Kramer of Des Moines, Sharon Smith and
significant other, Don Bancroft of Belmond, Judy Smith and
friend, Roger of Algona, Diane White of Clear Lake and Tammy
(Tim) Allison of Maple Plain, Minnesota; 13 grandchildren;
16 great-grandchildren; and brother, Calvin (Sharon) Kraus
of Garner.

Maurice Conwell
November 14, 2002
Maurice Conwell, died on Sunday, October 29, 2006, in West
Des Moines.
Maurice was born on June 4, 1925, the son of Owen and Marie
Foley Conwell. He graduated from the Goodell High School in
1942. He served in the Navy during WW II and the Korean War.
He attended Loras College.
He married Janet Weber in 1951, and retired as a salesman
with Dubuque Packing Co. in 1981.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Frank.
Survivors include his daughter, Susan Conwell of West Des
Moines; and son, David Conwell of Mesa, Arizona.

Venetta Black
November 22, 2006
Venetta Black, 88, died on Sunday, October 29, 2006. Funeral
services were held on Friday, November 3, in Joplin,
Missouri.
Venetta was born on March 13, 1918 in LaFontaine, Kansas,
the daughter of Weston and Wanda Welch. She married Frank
Black on July 10, 1952 in Arkansas. The Blacks have lived in
Joplin since 1972.
Venetta is survived by her husband, Frank; daughters, Linda
Lansford of Bolivar, Missouri and Beverly Havlicek of
Lexington, Kentucky; two brothers; and two sisters.
Venetta and Frank operated the Belmond A & W Drive-In during
the early 1960's.

Frank Hafermann
November 14, 2002
Frank Hafermann, 78, formerly of Meservey, died on Monday,
October 30, 2002, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
Funeral services were held on Friday, November 3, at the
Retz-Grarup Funeral Home in Meservey, with Rev. Rodney
Meester presiding. Interment was in the Meservey Cemetery.
Frank Emil, was born at home in Meservey to Albert and Emma
(Benz) Hafermann on February 12, 1928. He was baptized and
confirmed at the First Reformed in Meservey and graduated
from the Meservey High School.
Frank farmed with his family and then managed the family
farms in later years. He married Elsebeth Anne Garner, on
July 31, 1970 at the County Mission Church in Swaledale.
They made their home in Meservey where Frank served as Mayor
for 15 years. He was involved in the Area Community
Commonwealth and at the Country Mission Church, where he
helped with children's camps and sang in the choir.
Frank suffered a brain aneurysm in 1990 and moved to the
Sheffield Care Center in 1991.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant
sister.
Survivors include his wife of Green Bay, Wisconsin; and
cousins including Daryl (Lois Ann) Hafermann of Thornton,
Vern Janssen of Belmond and Scott (Jo) Hafermann of Goodell.
